The Dispersal and Plant Community Characteristics of Magnolia obovata - Focused on Case of Korea UNESCO Peace Center area in Gyeonggi-do - (일본목련의 분산 및 식물군집 특성에 관한 연구 -한국유네스코평화센터 주변을 대상으로-)

  • This research had been executed to find out the structure of Magnolia obovata community, a dispersal range and characteristics of scatter investigation, and to prepare management measure of it. In the result of this study, Magnolia obovata was distributed in a native plant community from planting trees of UNESCO Peace Center. The maximum numbers of Magnolia obovata were found in $20{\sim}100m$ from trees of mother. Seed of Magnolia obovata has a characteristics of gravity dispersal. But some individuals was found in 420m from its tree of mother. Seeds of Magnolia obovata has a characteristics of animal dispersal, too. Major species of animal dispersal are Garrulus glandarius, Ciurus vulgaris coreae, and Tamias sibiricus asiaticus in the study site. The importance value between native plants and Magnolia obovata had a negative relation. Because Magnolia obovata is more shade tolerant than other trees. Also, the growth of Magnolia obovata is faster than other trees. And so if the influence of Magnolia obovata reduce, it is necessary to expand native plant community, and to cut Magnolia obovata over 10m of the height and over 10cm of the DBH, for preventing influence of Magnolia obovata.

  • 도입 수종이지만 우리나라에서 자라고 있는 나무 중 잎의 크기가 가장 크며 자라는 속도도 매우 빠르다. 특히나 지금까지 우리가 잘못알고 있는 후박피(厚朴皮) 즉 후박나무 껍질은 지금 소개드리는 중국목련과 일본목련의 걷껍질이 한방에서 사용되는 후박(厚朴)이다. 몇 년 전 경희대학교 한의학과 교수님이 중국에서 중국 후박나무 묘목 한그루를 가져다 주시면서 홍릉수목원에서 잘 키워보라며 놓고 간 중국목련이 어느덧 4m정도 자랐다.

Studies on Antimicrobial and Antioxidative Activities of Extracts from Magnoliaceae (목련과 식물의 항균 및 항산화활성)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the antifungal and antioxidative activities of ethanol extracts from Magnoliaceae to investigate the possibility for the natural fungicides and food preservatives. The antifungal activities of ethanol extracts were evaluated as a hyphal growth inhibition rate using four plant pathogenic and five wood rot fungi. The high inhibition activity on the growth of fungi was shown in bark of Magnolia obovata that indicated more than 50% hyphal growth inhibition rate except Trametes versicolor, one of the white rot fungi. The antifungal activity was the highest in the ethanol extracts from M. obovata and the following was in order of M. kobus and M. sieboldii. The extract from bark in M. obovata showed higher antifungal activity than that from wood in the same species. Especially, the extracts from flower of M. denudata and M. liliflora indicated the high antifungal activities, while the other portions of same plants showed the low activities. On the other hand, a free radical scavenging method was adopted with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrohydrazyl (DPPH) in order to test the antioxidative activities of ethanol extracts. The free radical scavenging activity was very high in the extracts from branch of Schizandra nigra and Kadsura japonica that showed more than 90% at the concentration of 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$. It also turned out that the antioxidative activity of branch of S. nigra and K. japonica was similar to ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene, one of the effective synthetic antioxidants. From these results, it can be suggested that the branches of S. nigra and K. japonica have the positive antioxidative activities and can be applied for the food preservatives and cosmetic ingredient.

Cutting Propagation of Pruned Magnolia Obovata Branches in an Open Field (가지치기한 일본목련의 노지 삽목)

  • Magnolia obovata is a naturalized tree that was introduced from Japan for landscaping purposes and is spreading naturally. Its value as a landscape tree is high and its usefulness as a medicine is recognized, but mass propagation methods have not been developed due to the low success rate of cuttings. In this study, field cuttings were attempted using branches pruned in the fall as cuttings. The cuttings were cut to 30 cm in length and planted so that more than half were buried in the ground. A sunshade was put up with black vinyl, and a double vinyl tunnel was made with transparent vinyl to protect the cuttings. The double vinyl tunnel was removed at the end of March. Watering of cuttings mainly depended on natural rainfall, and cuttings were judged successful when new stems were 10 cm or longer along with leaves grown from cuttings in early June and early August. All of the thin cuttings with a diameter less than 8 mm failed to produce leaves, 4 out of 30 cuttings with a diameter of 8-10 mm, and 5 out of 30 cuttings with a diameter greater than 10 mm produced new stems of 10 cm or more along with leaves. The success rate of cuttings propagation was 11.3% of all cuttings and 15% of cuttings with a diameter greater than 8 mm. The results of this study show the possibility that cuttings using Magnolia obovata branches cut by pruning can be a viable propagation method.

  • 일본강점기에 수원고등농림학교를 졸업, 일본으로 건너가 조선인으로는 입학하기 어려웠던 규슈대학 농학부를 나온 후, 해방되던 해에 수원중앙농업시험장의 전작계장으로 부임한 인연을 시작으로 50년여 동안 우리나라 밭작물의 발전과 농학도 양성에 매달려 온 서하 조재영(西荷 趙載英) 박사(93)를 서울 서초구에 있는 한국학술원에서 만났다. 조박사는 1950년대에 보리, 밀 고구마 신품종을 개발, 농가에 보급해 '보릿고개'를 극복하게 했고 밭작물의 재배 및 육종 연구를 토대로 '재배학범' '전작'을 저술해 우리나라 작물학의 초석을 다져낸 이후, 오로지 그 일에 몰두하여 작물학 체계를 집대성해냈다. 황해도 연백 출생으로 대한민국 과학기술상 수상, 국민훈장 목련장 등을 수훈했다.

Pairing of Woody Landscape Plants between Eastern Asian and North American species (동아시아와 북미 분포 조경수목쌍 비교)

  • 동아시아와 북미에 분포하는 조경수목을 형태적 특성 및 분자생물학적 특성에 따른 연구 결과를 토대로 분류한 결과 8종에서 밀접한 관련성을 갖고 있었다. 자주받침꽃, 능소화, 산딸나무, 보리밥나무, 가래나무, 튤립나무, 일본목련, 잣나무는 동아시아와 북미에서 각각 밀접한 유연성을 가진 종들이 있어 이들을 조경수목쌍으로 분류할 수 있었다. 그리고, 형태적 특성이 매우 흡사한 종으로는 중국단풍나무, 고로쇠, 들메나무, 야광나무, 소나무와 곰솔, 상수리나무, 갈참나무, 떡갈나무, 신갈나무, 굴참나무, 피나무, 참느릅나무 등에서 동아시아와 북미 조경수목쌍이 존재하는 것으로 판단되었다.
