To elucidate whether or not solvent-tolerant bacteria use anti-oxidative defense systems to defend themselves against toxic solvents, oxidative enzyme activity and total anti-oxidative capacity (T-AOC) were investigated in two tolerant strains of Pseudomonas sp. under toluene stress. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of solvent tolerant BCNU 106 exhibited relatively increased levels at a toluene concentration of 100 mg/l, where those of solvent tolerant BCNU 171 increased at 200 mg/l. A greater than three-fold increase in catalase (CAT) levels was observed at concentrations of 200 and 300 mg/l in BCNU 106, and a two-fold increase was monitored at the same concentrations in BCNU 171. High glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels were also observed in the solvent tolerant bacteria. Higher levels of T-AOC was expressed in the solvent tolerant strains than in the ordinary non-tolerant KACC 10266. The highest plateau of SOD in BCNU 171 was observed at 1 hr of toluene exposure. CAT levels plateaued at 1 hr and 14 hr in BCNU 106 and reached the highest plateau at 3 hr in BCNU 171. The highest peak of T-AOC occurred at 9 hr in BCNU 106, and two high peaks occurred in BCNU 171, at 1 hr and at 9 hr of toluene exposure. The solvent-tolerant bacteria showed active antioxidant responses and could survive under harsh environments, including the presence of solvents, through means of antioxidant defense systems.
Antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of two giant embryonic rices, Nampung giant embryonic rice and Hwachung giant embryonic rice, were investigated mainly focusing on their ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation and scavenge reactive oxygen species in comparison with those of general rice. The results showed that germination process increased reducing power, inhibitory activity on lipid peroxidation and scavenging ability either on superoxide or hydroxyl radicals. Among the cultivars tested, increase in antioxidative action was found to be most prominent for Hwachung giant embryonic rice cultivar. For scavenging of superoxide radicals, the extract from Nampung giant embryonic rice has the most potent activity, however, increasing rate of scavenging activity by germination process was also found to be the greatest for Hwachung giant embryonic rice. We found that the scavenging mechanism for superoxide radicals was attributed to the direct scavenging of the radicals. The scavenging of hydroxyl radicals, the most toxic oxygen radical to biological system, by the rice extracts were also examined, and the results showed that either overall activity or the increasing rate of the activity to scavenge hydroxyl radicals by germination process was the greatest for Hwachung giant embryonic rice. Moreover, the results suggested that the scavenging action to hydroxyl radicals might be mediated by direct quenching of the radicals, not by chelating $Fe^{2+}$. Further studies showed that the antioxidant action of the rice extracts tested in vitro was also operative for suppressing ROS production induced in TPA-stimulated HL-60 cells.
In the aspect of saving energy and water, facilitating the separation membrane for the water treatment has been rising recently as one of the possible solutions. However, microbial biofouling effect is the biggest obstacle that hinders reaching higher permeability over a prolonged period of nanofiltration operation. To solve this problem and fully utilize the filtration membranes with enhanced performance, largely two kinds of solutions are studied and the first and the most commonly mentioned type is the one using the silver nanoparticles. Since silver nanoparticles are important to be well tailored on membrane surface, various methods have been applied and suggested. Using silver nanoparticles however also has the drawbacks or possible toxicity risks, raising the need for other types of utilizing non silver particles to functionalize the membrane, such as copper, graphene or zinc oxides, and amine moieties. Each attempt included in either kind has produced some notable results in killing, preventing, or repelling the bacteria while at the same time, left some unsolved points to be evaluated. In this review, the effects of metal nanoparticles and other materials on the antifouling properties of water treatment membranes are summarized.
The human adipose and milk samples analyzed in this study were collected at hospitals in Seoul, Masan and Jinju. The mean values of International Dioxin Toxic Equivalents (I-TEQ) of PCDDs and PCDFs in human adipose samples from the three regions were calculated as 9 pg I-TEQ/g(0.2 ~ 30 pg TEQ/g, lipid weight basis) and 8 pg I-TEQ/g (0.8 ~ 25 pg TEQ/g), respectively. The residue levels of PCDDs-TEQ and PCDFs-TEQ in human milk collected from Masan were 13 pg I-TEQ/g (lipid wt.) and 4.8 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. On the whole, the contamination levels of these compounds in the Korean population were lower than those in the other countries. Based on the analytical data and assuming a daily intake consumption of 800 mL milk with 3% fat, the average daily intake of PCDDs/DFs via human milk for a baby weighing 5 Kg could be calculated. The daily intake of PCDDs/DFs via breast-feeding was estimated to be 39 pg/kg body weight/day for 2,3,7,8-TeCDD and 86 pg/kg/day for TEQ. These levels are far above all virtually safe dose(VSD) or tolerable daily intake(TDI) values proposed by health authorities in various countries, ranging from 0.001(US EPA) to 4 pg/kag/day (WHO).
All of the water and stone-dust samples with or without flocculant, in and around quarry mines, were analyzed for total concentrations of heavy metals, cyanide(CN), toxic organic compounds and organic phosphorus. Extraction experiments on stone-dust by EDTA and various pH solutions were also carried out, in order to evaluate the contaminant leaching from the long-term heaped stone-dust within quarry mines. The concentrations of $Cr^{6+}$, Hg, CN, TCE/PCE and total phosphorus in all samples (water and stone-dust) were under detection limits, confirming no environmental contamination from stone-dust in quarry mine areas. Lead and cadmium were not detected in all water samples. Copper and zinc were found in some water samples, and arsenic was detected in a few water samples. But they also showed levels much lower than the drinking water standard. Results of the extraction experiments by EDTA and pH solutions showed that Pb, Cr, Cd, Cu and Zn were leached out in less amounts or under detection limits. Arsenic was detected only at pH 3. From above results, we suggested that environmental contamination by quarry mine development is likely to be minor or negligible.

BACKGROUND: RNA interference (RNAi) eliminates or decreases gene expression by disrupting the target mRNA or by interfering with translation. Recently, RNAi technique was applied to generate new crop traits which provide protection against pests. To establish the environmental risk assessment protocol of RNAi LMO in lab scale, we developed dsRNA expression system using E. coli and tested acute oral toxicity assay to honey. METHOD AND RESULTS: The dsRNA expression vector, L4440, was chosen and cloned 240 bp of Snf7 and GFP gene fragment. To develop the maximum dsRNA induction condition in E. coli, we tested induction time, temperature and IPTG concentration in media. To estimate the risk assessment of dsRNA to honey bee, it has been selected and cultured with dsRNA supplement for 48 hours according to OECD guideline. As a result, the optimum condition of dsRNA induction was $37^{\circ}C$, 4 hours and 0.4 mM IPTG concentration and the difference between Snf7 and GFP dsRNA molecules from E. coli was not significant in survival and behavior to honey bee. Furthermore, blast search results indicated that effective match of predicted dsRNA fragments were not existed in honey bee genome. CONCLUSION: In this study, we developed and tested the acute oral toxicity of dsRNA using E. coli expression system to honey bee.

Ecological characteristics of microbial populations inhabiting heavy metal polluted soil were investigated. The samples were collected from 293 sites around an factory and industry at Gyeoungsangbuk-do. We measured the contents of seven heavy metal elements (Cd, Cu, As, Hg, Pb, $Cr^{6+}$, CN), seven sites have been seriously contaminated by mercury and chrome. A quantitative evaluation of microbial populations in mercury and chrome contaminated soil was examined by using plate count method. Bacterial numbers in polluted soil samples ranged from $7.4X10^5\;to\;9.3X10^7\;cfu\;g^{-1}$, about $10\sim100$ fold less than the count for the unpolluted soil. Moulds were not detected in chrome polluted soil. The log values of actinomycetes of each contaminated soil samples were log ranged from 6.18 to 7.52. The ratio of actinomycetes was similar to unpolluted soil. The investigation showed actinomycetes to be the major microbial population inhabiting the mercury and chrome polluted soil. Thirty-one isolates among the total isolates were examined for antibacterial activity. These isolates were identified based on a phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences, they were categorized in three major phylogenetic groups, belong to the Streptomyces (6 strains), Saccharopolyspora (3 strains), Nocardiodes (1 strain). On the phylogenetic tree, the clade consisting of five isolates were distantly related to all of the established Streptomycetes genera, indicating the possibility as members of new species.

Self-injurious behavior is defined as deliberated harm to one's own body without suicidal intent. It usually occurs as head banging or hitting, body hitting, skin cutting, or finger biting and includes ocular, genital, and self-inflicted oral mutilation. Self-injurious behavior can occur with mental retardation, coma, psychotic problem, poisoning, or character disorders. In pediatric patients, self-injurious behavior usually is reported to lip, cheek and tongue biting, and many kinds of dental management methods have been introduced to prevent self-injurious behavior patients from self biting. This report presents two self-inflicted oral mutilation patients who were all treated successfully with appliances such as modified activator without wire for retention, modified tongue-rake appliance and mouth guard.
This study was carried out to investigate antimutagenic and cytotoxic effects of Korean traditional Mackjang added with sea tangle powder. The content percentage of most of minerals among general composition increased by adding sea tangle powder. By the Ames test, the antimutagenic effect of ethanol extract of Korean traditional Mackjang added with 5% sea tangle powder was strongest exceeding the control, 10%, and 15% sea tangle additions. The ethanol extract (400$\mu$g/plate) of Mackjang added with 5% sea tang1e powder in the S. typhimurium TA 100 strain showed inhibition rate of 95.0% against the mutagenesis induced by MNNG. The inhibition rate of ethanol extract (400$\mu$g/plate) of Mackjang added with 5% sea tang1e powder in the S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains was 81.4% and 88.8%, respectively, against the mutagenesis induced by 4NQO. Under the same conditions, the suppression against B($\alpha$)P and Trp-P-1 in the TA98 and TA100 strains were 85.3% and 91.0%, and 96.5% and 96.5%, respectively. For the anticancer effects, an investigation was done on the cytotoxicity of Mackjang added with 5% sea tangle powder on the cell lines with human lung carcinoma (A549), human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), and human gastric carcinoma (KATOIII). The cytotoxicities were inhibited with increasing the extract concentration. The treatment of 1.0 mg/mL Mackjang added with 5% sea tang1e powder showed relatively strong cytotoxicity of 61.2%, 61.8% and 66.8% against A549, KATOIII, and HepG2, respectively.

Biodegradable polymers such as polylactide, polyglycolide and poly (lactide- co-glycolide) (PLGA) have been extensively investigated because of easily controlled drug release rate, completely degradable materials without the toxic by-product, and good biocompatibility. But, according to the bulk erosion property of PLGA in vitro test, it had the disadvantage that first-order release reduced releasing amount slowly after excessive initial burst. In this study we used PLGA powder obtained through recrystallization to revise bulk erosion property of PLGA. The PLGA used in this study was prepared by vacuum drying method and to estimate release profiles of BCNU loaded PLGA wafer. We also evaluated the release profile of drug with the water soluble additive. It was found that the drug loaded PLGA recrystallized by vacuum drying method exhibited the initial burst and the constant rate of drug release compared to that prepared by a conventional method.
