  • We investigated the effects of dietary supplements of probiotics, illite, active carbon and hardwood vinegar on growth performance, carcass characteristics and fatty acid composition in finishing pigs. One hundred fifty pigs ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$; $32.3{\pm}1.3 kg$ average initial body weight) were used in a 100 day experiment. Pigs were randomly placed into five experimental feeding groups (control, 0.2% probiotics, 1.0% illite, 1.0% active carbon and 1.0% hardwood vinegar) and were slaughtered at approximately 110 kg live weight. There was a slight, but insignificant increase in average daily body weight gain and feed intake among all treatment groups. Feed conversion was reduced when probiotics were added (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the carcass rate and back fat thickness among the all treatment groups including controls. However, the frequency rate of grade A increased in the groups fed 1.0% active carbon and hard- wood vinegar compared to controls. Stearic acid content was lower in the groups fed probiotics illite active carbon and hardwood vinegar (p<0.05). Oleic acid contents were higher only in the groups fed 1.0% active carbon and hardwood vinegar (p<0.05).

  • To determine nutritive value and suitability of deep-stacked broiler litter for deer, the influence of supplementary levels of broiler litter on digestibility, dry matter intake, and nitrogen balance was investigated in male spotted deer (Cervus nippon) fed a commercial mixed(complete) ration. The deep-stacked and ground broiler litter was supplemented at the level of 0%(Control), 15%(T1) and 30%(T2) on the basis of fresh matter to the mixed ration. All treatments had similar palatability at about 3% body weight of dry matter intake. Dry matter digestibility was highest in Control and lowest in T2(P<0.05). Digestibility of crude protein was lowest(P<0.05) in T2. Dry matter and digestible dry matter intake was similar in all treatments. Daily body weight gain was not affected by treatments. Feeding 15 or 30% of broiler litter to male deer resulted in similar nitrogen intake, fecal nitrogen excretion and daily nitrogen retention(g/d), compared with feeding Control. These results suggest that up to 30% of broiler litter may be fed to male deer without deleterious effects on deer performance.

  • This study was conducted to determine the feed value of total mixed rations (TMR) containing different winter forage crop silages on feed intakes, daily gain, nutrient digestibility, and nitrogen retention in Korean black goats. A total of 12 male goats were used in this study and each goat was housed in individual metabolism crates. The treatments were four diets, consisting of whole crop barley silage (T1), rape silage (T2), rye silage (T3), and Italian ryegrass silage (T4). The experiment was designed as a $4{\times}4$ Latin square arrangement in three replicates. Daily intakes for dietary dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) per head were highest in rape silage treatment, and lowest in whole barley silage (p<0.05). Digestible intakes for CP and acid detergent fiber were highest in rape silage treatment. The daily gain of rape, rye, and Italian ryegrass silages were significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of whole crop barley silage. Digestibility of DM. CP, fiber were highest in whole crop barley silage, and lowest in rape silage (p<0.05). Nitrogen (N) intake and N retention were significantly highest in rape silage and lowest in whole crop barley silage (p<0.05). The results showed that, among different winter forage crop silages, rape silage incorporation into TMR had the best performances indicating increases of feed intakes and N retention in Korean black goats.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of concentrate feeding frequency on weight change and the colic of Jeju cross-bred horses. Around thirty-six old Jeju cross-bred horses were divided into three groups and were investigated by feeding the concentrate feed at 2.5% of their body weight 2 times, 3 times, or 4 times daily. Although the total weight gain and daily weight gain for the different feeding frequencies were higher with feeding concentrates 4 times daily compared with the other treatment groups, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). Rectal temperatures were above the normal range in weeks 11 to 12, but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). Fecal pH was below the normal range in weeks 1 to 12, but there were no colic symptoms with any of the treatments and there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). When feeding concentrate feed at 2.5% of body weight, it was assumed that trying to feed it several times per day would help to prevent colic; however, there was no difference in weight gain, blood characteristics, and physiological characteristics in accordance with the number of feeding times.

  • In order to provide information of genetic variants for Haptoglobin (Hp) gene, which may be related to weight traits in pig, a total of 235 animals from National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) were screened with 3 primers. The primer sequences were selected using the porcine cDNA sequences based on NM_214000, and the exon boundaries were estimated. Genetic variants were observed using direct sequencing analysis, and there were 9 SNPs detected at nucleotide positions 503 (A/G), 509 (A/G), 709 (C/T), 734 (C/A), 742 (G/A), 769 (A/G), 840 (C/T), 876 (C/T) and 882 (C/A). All the SNPs were located in coding regions, and mutations caused amino acid changes at nucleotide positions 503, 509, 734, 742 and 769. Allele frequencies of SNPs were estimated for all segments. The SNPs at nucleotide position 509 (p<0.0001) and 734 (p<0.05) were significantly associated with average daily gain, but no significance was observed with other SNPs. From the results, the identified SNPs may be a useful candidate marker for the porcine weight gain traits.

  • The study was carried out to iind out the suitable ventilation system of the broiler house in winter season in Korea. Ammonia (NH$_3$-N) gas concentration (4.2ppm) of the system of pipe air inlet-forced chimney outlet was lower than that of the system of side wall inlet. The growth performance of broilers in the house equiped with pipe air inlet-chimney exhaust was higher than that of other ventilation systmes in which the average daily gain, feed efficiency and heat cost per head in the system of pipe air inlet-forced chimney excretion were 45.6g, 1.71 and 35.4 won per head, respectively. When the lengths of pipe air inlets were compared, the wind speed from the 4 meter-inlet was highest. The temperature of the broiler house equipped with the pipe air inlet system was higher (5.9 ∼ 7.7$^{\circ}C$) than that of the curtains in side wall Inlet system, in which the pipe air inlet system expects the lower heat cost.

  • Two pig trials were conducted to test Herb MixⓇ, a mixture of Rehmannia glutinosa, Angelica gigas, Discorea japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Schisandra chinensis and Ligusticum jeholense, as a herbal additive to weaning pig diet. Exp. 1 was conducted with 45 three-way cross-bred(Y×L×D) weaning pigs randomly allocated to 3 treatments; control, Herb MixⓇ 0.15% and Herb MixⓇ Gold(Plellidendron amurense fortified Herb MixⓇ) 0.15%. Exp. 2 was conducted with 48 weaning pigs randomly allocated to 4 treatments; control, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% Herb MixⓇ. There was a significant(p=0.05) difference between the control and herbal additive groups, however, no significant difference was found between Herb MixⓇ and Herb MixⓇ Gold in growth performance of Exp. 1. In Ex. 2, supplementation of Herb MixⓇ at all level(0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3%) significantly(P<0.05) improved average daily gain and feed intake, however, there were no significant differences among supplemented groups. Among the blood parameters, serum IgG level and WBC numbers were significantly lowered by Herb Mix supplementation in both experiments. Stress indicator(SI) was significantly lower in herbal additive groups in Exp. 1. Nutrient digestibility of DM and NFE in supplemented groups was lower than the control in Exp. 1. Howener, it was not significantly different among treatments in Exp. 2. Number(cfu) of fecal E.coli decreased while that of Lactobacilli increased in treated groups. It was concluded that fortifying Herb MixⓇ with Plellidendron amurense was not effective in improving the efficacy of Herb MixⓇ and supplementation of Herb MixⓇ at 0.1~0.2% level improves growth performance of weaning pigs. Blood parameters especially immunity related ones(IgG, WBC and SI) were significantly influenced.

  • Metabolic trial with 3 fistulated sheep was conducted in a 3 $\times$ 3 Latin square design and feeding trial with 24 Hanwoo steers in 12 month of age for 20 months was conducted to investigate the replacing effect of rice straw with fermented spent mushroom (Flammuliua velutipes) compost (FSMC) on fermentation characteristics, ruminal effective degradabilty and whole tract digestibility of nutrients in sheep, and to examine the growth performance of Hanwoo steers. Experimental diets for the metabolic trial with sheep were commercial concentrates and rice straw in the ratio of 70 : 30 (CON, DM basis). Same concentrate with 30% FSMC and 70% rice straw (FSMC-30) and 60% FSMC and 40% rice straw(FSMC-60). Diets for Hanwoo steers in three treatments were same as for metabolic trial in replacing ratio of rice straw with FSMC. pH of rumen fluid in sheep was not affected by FSMC. Ammonia-N content in the rumen fluid was highest in the sheep fed FSMC-60 at 3h (P<0.045). The CON diet increased (P<0.001) acetate proportion at 1h and 3h post feeding compared to FSMC-60 diet while propionate proportion was highest in the sheep fed FSMC-60 diet for all the sampling times (P<0.027~P<0.002). Increased proportion of butyrate was observed at 30 min prior to feeding (P<0.031), and 1h (P<0.011) and 6h(P<0.039) post feeding from sheep fed FSMC-30 diet compared to those from sheep fed other diets. Effective degradability in the rumen was not influenced by experimental diets. Whole tract digestibility of crude protein (P<0.031) and neutral detergent fiber (P<0.006) tended to be increased in the sheep fed CON diet while corresponding values were lowest in the sheep fed FSMC-60 diet. Total body weight gain of Hanwoo steers for 8 months was not different among diets, thus daily body gain was not influenced by the experimental diets.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of oriental herb extracts (Alpha $Plus^{(R)}$ (AP)+Dried Foxglove Powder (DFP)) on growth performance and proliferation of splenocytes in broiler chicken raised under low or high density stocking conditions. A total of 240 male broiler chicks were randomly divided into four treatment groups with three replicates composed of ten birds in low density stocking groups and thirty birds in high density stocking groups. The four treatment groups were as follows: Cl (low density without AP and DFP); T1 (low density with AP 0.2% and DFP 0.03%); C2 (high density without AP and DFP); T2 (high density with AP 0.2% and DFP 0.03%). The feed intake of the high density stocking group was significantly lower than that of low density stocking groups during overall experimental period (p<0.05). The body weight of high density stocking groups was lower than that of low density stocking groups (p<0.05). The decrease of feed intake and body weight gain in growing stage (7~25day) under the high density stocking condition seems to be recovered in final stage (26~34day). Meanwhile dietary supplementation of AP+DFP in low and high density stocking groups tended to have higher daily body weight gain than control groups. The proliferation of splenocytes in treatment groups was significantly higher than control groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, the result of the present study suggested that the oriental herb extracts (AP+DFP) could be used as an alternative feed additive resources to improve growth performance and immune activity in broiler chickens.
