  • This study was conducted to establish standard fresh weight data about the minimum amount of occurred weeds at untreated paddy fields, upland fields and orchard fields (including non-cultivated land) in 10 areas. The amount of occurred weeds in each area was compared fresh weight with dry weight. The average percentage for ratio of dry weight to fresh weight in paddy fields was concluded to be 14.8% of Echinochola crus-galli, 12.5% of annual weeds (including Echinochola crus-galli), and 13.9% of perennial weeds. The average percentage for ratio of dry weight to fresh weight in upland fields was concluded to be 20.1% of annual weeds and in orchard fields was concluded to be 18.4% of annual and perennial weeds. According to the research, standard fresh weight about the minimum amount of occurred weeds at untreated paddy fields was proposed to $210g\;m^{-2}$ of Echinochola crus-galli, $400g\;m^{-2}$ of annual weeds (including Echinochola crus-galli), and $220g\;m^{-2}$ of perennial weeds. Standard fresh weight about the minimum amount of occurred weeds at untreated upland fields was proposed to $250g\;m^{-2}$ of annual weeds and at untreated orchard fields was proposed to $550g\;m^{-2}$ of annual and perennial weeds.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of soil phosphorus(P) level on growth environment of annual-and perennial plant. The results obtained are summarized as follow:1. With increasing level of phosphorus fertilizer, plant length of Italian-and perennial ryegrass tended to increase. 2. After the second year, DM yield of perennial ryegrass was significantly higher than that of Italian ryegrass in all treatments. 3. In the difference of P-yield between high P-treatment and nil P-treatment, there was tendency for that of Italian ryegrass to be increased but for perennial ryegrass to be decreased throughout 3 years. 4. The growth of perennial ryegrass compared with Italian ryegrass was tended to profitable in low phosphorus environment than high phosphorus environment.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of soil phosphorus level on plant length, dry matter yield and competition in annual and perennial plants. The effect of phosphorus fertilizer on the plant length and dry matter yield was low in the perennial plant of Miscanthus sinensis, SaSa palmata and ilrtemlsia princeps, but was high in the annual plant of Polygonwn thunbergii and Echinochloa crus-galli.The plant length, density and dry matter yield of Italian ryegrass in individual natural community did not depend on relative photosynthetic photon flux density but on total and available phosphorus of soil.

  • Differences in weed occurrence was investigated among five types of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. The five types employed were three transplanting cultivations such as conventional hand transplanting, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling and two direct-seedings such as flood direct-seeded rice by pregerminated seed and dry direct-seeded rice by dry seed. Weed specie, occurred varied from 7 to 20, depending on the different cultivation types. Weeds were more diverse in transplanting with l0-day-old seedling than in other transplanting cultivations and in direct-seeding than in transplanting practice. Dominant weed species also varied with cultivation types. In transplanting cultivations Scirpus juncoides Roxb., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., and Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi were dominant, whereas occurrence of annual weeds such as Cyperus difformis L. and Monochoria vaginalis Presl. aside from the three weed species increased in direct-seeded cultivations.

  • Annual legume is being used as an important source of protein for farm animals and an ingredient for nitrogen fertilizers. There are, however, difficulties in selecting appropriate cultivar and forage management technique. The objective of this study is to select the best performing cultivars and evaluate a forage value on annual legume at two locations (Suwon and Sunghwan) for 1 year (1999${\sim}$2000). All cultivars shown a seedling vigor and lodging resistance of 8 rating or higher. Crimson and rose clover showed that they are appropriate for overwintering, but ;Laser; (35.9%) and 'Nitro'(9.1%) of persian clover variety did not overwinter well from 1999 to 2000. Flower stage was observed 4th of May for 'Tibbee', 6th of May for 'Contea' crimson clover, and 29th of April for 'Bolta balansa' rose clover. DM yield of a crimson clover 'Contea' (4,218kg/ha) was the highest among the legume forage. A crimson clover 'Tibbee' and rose clover 'Bolta balansa' also had a high production yield (3,874 and 3,828kg/ha). Calculations of relative feed value (RFV) based on the acid and neutral detergent fiber (ADF and NDF) of annual legume were over 125, which means that quality was high. According to the results of this study, crimson and rose clovers are recommended due to their high winter survival rate and high DM yield. Persian clover is not recommended because of a low overwintering rate at the Central region in Korea.

  • We surveyed the distribution of exotic weeds in the 141 crop fields of Jeju island. The exotic weeds were summarized as 66 taxa including 18 families, 50 genera, 64 species and 2 varieties. In winter crop fields there were 45 species of exotic seeds in 18 families, in summer crop fields 50 species in 16 families, and in perennial crop fields 39 species in 17 families. Total exotic weeds were classified to 39.4% of summer annuals, 36.4% of winter annuals, 7.6% of summer and winter annuals, and 16.7% of perennials. The ratio of summer annuals were high in the summer crop fields. Compositae was dominant family, followed by Gramineae, Malvaceae and Solanaceae. Malvaceae did not appear in perennial crop fields. Dominant exotic weeds in winter crop fields were Chenopodium album, Amaranthus viridis, Senecio vulgaris and Coronopus didymus, in summer crop fields, Chenopodium album, Amaranthus viridis, Senecio vulgaris and Sonchus oleraceus and in perennial crop fields, Conyza sumatrensis, Gnaphalium calviceps and Senecio vulgaris. The dominant exotic weeds in the crop fields of Jeju island were Chenopodium album, followed by Amaranthus viridis, Senecio vulgaris, and Conyza sumatrensis. This information could be useful for establishment of exotic weed control methods in Jeju island.

  • Present studies were carried out to clarify the variation of agronomic characters of Panax ginseng (violet-stem variant and yellow-berry variant) and Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng). The variations of stem diameter. stem length, leaf width, root diameter. and root length of Panax quinquefolium were found to be more variable as compared with those of Panax ginseng. As for the variations of agronomic characters of Panax ginseng. violet-stem variant was more variable than yellow-berry variant. In Panax ginseng as well as Panax quinquefolium . the variability of stem length. leaf length, and root length was high. while the other agronomic characters showed comparatively low variability.
