  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with perceived health status of married immigrant women. Methods: Data were collected from 65 married immigrant women. The measurements were Symptom checklist-48, Acculturative Stress Scale, Parenting Stress Index(PSI), and Personal Resource Questionnaire(PQR). Descriptive, T-test, ANOVA test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses were used. Results: There were significant differences in perceived health status according to satisfaction with the married life(F=8.819, p=0.000), and help from husband(F=6.308, p=.003). There was also a significant relationship between perceived health status and perceived economic status (F=8.006, p=.001), acculturative stress (r=.560, p<.01), parenting stress (r=.662, p<.01) and social support (r=-.289, p<.05). The result of multiple regression analysis showed a significant association of parenting stress with perceived health status of married immigrant women (${\beta}=0.397$, p=0.037). Conclusion: Comprehensive interventions designed to enhance the health of married immigrant women, including prevention of acculturative stress, parenting stress and improving social support may be helpful in mitigating health in married immigrant women.

  • The present research investigated and compared stress coping strategies of North Korean refugees with those of South Koreans in the purpose to predict and prepare psychological conflicts expected to occur during the Korean reunification. Adapted from Han, Hur, Chae, and Kim(2001), North Korean refugees recorded their coping strategies that they would employ in stressful situations varying in term of three aspects of stress causes - 2(locus: internal/external) × 2(stability: temporal/enduring) × 2(context: individual/interpersonal) - and the responses were classified in terms of three dimensions(active/passive, approach/avoidance, cognitive/affective/behavioral). In the temporal stress situations, adaptive North Korean refugees preferred active over passive, approaching over avoiding, and behavioral over cognitive/affective stress coping strategies more than maladaptive North Korean refugees did. Also, in the stressful situations caused by external causes, they were more likely to take active rather than passive, approaching rather than avoiding copying. Although active copying strategies were preferred to passive ones by adaptive North Korean refugees in individual stressful situations, approaching copying strategies were preferred to avoiding ones by them in interpersonal stressful situations. These findings were found to be different from the pattern of South Korean's stress coping strategies in the same situations. In conclusion, the differences were discussed in the view of psychological integration during Korean reunification.

  • Introduction: This research was performed to contract the attitude of dietary restriction and the psychological problems such as depressive mood and perceived stress and to investigate the relationship of these and obesity in women who visited the obesity clinic. Methods: During May 2001, sociodemographic variables, physical characteristics, Three Factor Eating Questionnaire(TFEQ), Symptom Check List-90-R(SCL-90-R) and Perceived Stress Scale were assessed from 150 female who visited the obesity clinics which were located at downtown, Seoul and the Hospital of Ajou University, Medical College. Hamilton depression rating scale(HDRS) was estimated by author. And then 116 female cases who filled up the questionnaire faithfully were included. Results: Obese group more than Body Mass Index(BMI) $25.0kg/m^2$ was 50% of the total subjects. BMI was increased as the age goes up(p<0.001). The frequency of unmarried cases in the under normal weight group was high rate of 48.8% while it in the obese group was 13.8%(p<0.001). There was no significant difference in the rate of smoking and alcohol drinking among subjects by BMI. There was no significant difference of TFEQ among subjects by BMI and the percent of body fat. Factor 2(r=0.27, p<0.01) and Factor 3(r=0.24, p<0.01) were significantly correlated with Global Severity Index(GSI). Only the paranoia scale among each estimated mean value of T scores of SCL-90-R by BMI was the significant difference between the overweight group and the obese group(p<0.05). T scores of scales of SCL-90-R were less than 50, but T scores of the under normal weight group and the obese group were higher than overweight group. GSI was significantly correlated with HDRS(r=0.75, p<0.01) and Perceived Stress Scale(r=0.32, p<0.01). Depressive mood in the obese group was significantly higher than non-obese group that HDRS was compared to two groups by the percent of body fat(p<0.05). Perceived Stress Scale was no significant correlation with BMI and the percent of body fat. All of the subject were in trouble of high stress. Stress affected dietary restriction owing that perceived stress had a relation with Factor 2(r=0.29, p<0.01) and Factor 3(r=0.37, p<0.01). Also, it affected psychological characteristics owing that perceived stress had a relation with the depression scale, GSI and HDRS(r=0.33, r=0.32, r=0.34, p<0.01). Conclusion: Obese women have more psychological difficulties including depression and high perceived stress, which closely related with the attitude of dietary restriction. Psychiatric intervention and aggressive assessment of psychological problems will be needed to the people who visit the obesity clinic in the future.

  • As the level of job-seeking stress increases among college students, increasing attention is being paid to the variables that would decrease its negative effects through brief intervention programs or counseling. As such, in the present study, we examined the effects of job-seeking stress on depression and psychological well-being, and whether resilience (internal variable) and social support (external variable) would moderate such effects. In other words, we tested whether the negative effects of job-seeking stress on depression and psychological well-being would be decreased by resilience and social support. A total of 264 fourth-year college students and unemployed 4-year college graduates, who were looking for jobs in private and public enterprises participated in this study. The results indicated that resilience moderated the relation between job-seeking stress and depression, while social support did not. In contrast, resilience did not moderate the relation between job-seeking stress and psychological well-being, whereas social support did. These results suggest that as resilience increases, the effect of job-seeking stress on depression decreases, whereas as social support increases, the effect of job-seeking stress on psychological well-being decreases.

  • In the present study was to examine the influence of cold stress conditions on memory function in relation with 5-hydroxytryptamine(serotonin, 5-HT), trptophanhydroxylase(TPH) expression and cell proliferation in the hippocampus. For this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing $250{\pm}10g$ (7 weeks in age) were used. The rats were randomly divided into three groups(n = 10 in each group): the $22^{\circ}C$-control group, the $4^{\circ}C$-3 days group, the $4^{\circ}C$-5 weeks group. The environmental temperature at $22^{\circ}C$ set as the normal conditions, $4^{\circ}C$ was as the cold stress conditions. The present results showed that cold stress conditions shorten latency, representing cold stress disturbed memory function. 5-HT and TPH expressions in the dorsal raphe were increased cold stress. Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus was increased under cold conditions. The present study revealed that cold stress exerted deteriorative memory function. However, through increasing of 5-HT, TPH and BrdU expression under cold stress conditions did not show memory enhancing effect.

  • The purpose of the study is to prove the effectiveness of the bibliotherapy in decreasing the stress among the elderly. A 4-week program was developed and provided in 2 types, group meeting and individual telephone contact, for the old over 60 years. A total of 121 participants completed the program offered at 16 institutions. Participants' stress perception and stress response were measured prior to the bibliotherapy and post-tests were followed. 17 hypotheses were tested statistically by t-test and ANOVA. The followings are the main results. Both types of the bibliotherapy are effective in decreasing the stress of the old. Group meeting program is more effective than individual contact program. There were no significant effectiveness difference among the groups divided by sex, age, and education level. Bibliotherapy effectiveness is differ among groups divided by the initial stress perception level. Obviously, bibliotherapy was more effective for the old in high stress level than those in low stress level. Based on the results, recommendations are suggested to promote the bibliotherapy program.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing file-up family stress in the caregivers of patients with dementia. Data was collected by questionnaires from 102 families with a member having a dementia, at neurology departments of hospitals, temporary shelter for dementia patient, and nursing homes for the elderly. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. In results, the score of file-up stress showed a significantly negative correlation with the score of level of family hardiness(r=-.200, p=.026), social support(r=-.361, p=.004), relative and friend support(r=-.416, p=.001), and F-COPES(r=-.345, p=.048). The multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of file-up family stress was family cost for patients with dementia. The results contribute to the understanding of Korean family caregivers' perceptions of caregiveing. Further researches should be conducted with the consideration of Korean traditional custom that family should take care of the elderly family members.

  • This study attempted to provide basic data to develop a nursing intervention for managing communicable diseases in the elderly by identifying the relationship between COVID-19 stress and self-management efficacy perceived by elderly individuals. Data were collected from 133 participants using a structured questionnaire on general characteristics, COVID-19 stress, and self-management efficacy. Data analysis included a t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results revealed that COVID-19 stress differed according to occupation, educational attainment, economic status, and subjective health status, while self-management efficacy differed according to subjective health status. COVID-19 stress correlated positively with self-management efficacy, and there was a positive correlation in the prevention and home-management areas, among the lower areas. Therefore, appropriate COVID-19 stress among elderly individuals can act as a factor to increase the efficacy of prevention and home-management. As the pandemic continues, repeated studies should expand the range of participants and changes by period.

  • This research was performed to analyze quantitatively how spiritual stress affects some ERPs on human through sight stimulus after the settlement of visual and auditory integration environment in three dimension space. We measured ERPs in the normal state and spiritual stress sessions separately. The subjects were 10 normal men and women and vital signs was recorded from Fpl, Fz, Cz, Pz, O1, O2's scalps. The experiment was done in isolated room where electro-magnetic effect do not affect. The result showed that P300's amplitude was a little higher under stress session and latent period in this resulted in longer time. We recorded through voltage variation the activity of brain which is in charge of human's perception. cognition, process of action and evaluated the effect of spiritual stress. We expected that the result of this research can be used to evaluate the malfunction of brain.
