This study focused on finding how to raise the positive effect of a service employee on the organization by strengthening his sympathetic feeling at the position of business, not the position of customer and how to reduce the negative effect. The specific objectives of the study are: First, the effect factors of the empathy abilities (cognitive empathy, emotional empathy) of a service employee are largely classified as the social support (supervisor support, co-worker support) to the service employee and the self-soothing ability. Therefore, this study tries to verify the relationship between the self-soothing ability, and social support and empathy which are preceding factors of the empathy of a service employee. Second, it also tries to verify the relationship between job stress and empathy ability(cognitive empathy, emotional empathy) of a service employee. As a result of the verification of the study hypothesis, first, the social support was distinguished as supervisor support and co-worker support, and the empathy ability was distinguished as cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. As a result of verifying the relationship between social support and empathy ability, the supervisor support did not have a positive effect on cognitive empathy while the co-worker support did have a positive effect of cognitive empathy. The supervisor support had a positive effect on emotional empathy and the co-worker support had a positive effect on emotional empathy. Second, the self-soothing ability of a service employee had a positive effect on empathy ability and a positive effect on both cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Finally, the empathy ability(cognitive empathy, emotional empathy) of a service employee was shown to have a negative effect on the job stress of a service employee.
This purposed of this study was to investigate the effect of empathy on social justice commitment from a social-cognitive perspective. Specifically, we examined how cognitive and affective empathy affect social justice commitment through social justice self-efficacy, social justice outcome expectation, and social justice interest which represent a social-cognitive path of behavior. Based on the self-report survey sample of 537 people in their twenties, we first controlled social desirability, and then analyzed the measurement and structure model using Structure Estimate Modeling(SEM). As a result, it turned out that both cognitive and affective empathy indirectly affected social justice commitment through the path of the social-cognitive model. However, affective empathy had a larger effect size compared to cognitive empathy. Results suggest that empathy competence has an effect on not only general altruistic behavior as known before but also social justice behavior which include the value of equality and anti-discrimination. Finally, ways for facilitating social justice commitment in terms of cognitive and affective empathy were suggested.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of new graduate nurses' empathy and their perceived preceptors' empathy on job satisfaction, job stress and turnover intention. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on new graduate nurses who were under 12 months old while working at three medical institutions that operated the preceptorship. In the preceptorship according to adult learning theory, the preceptors need to create a psychological environment for the new graduate nurses, and their empathy should be perceived by new graduate nurses. The study revealed that the new graduate nurses group with high level of empathy had high levels of job satisfaction, low job stress, and low degree of turnover intention, and the level of empathy affects job satisfaction of new graduate nurses. The new graduate nurses group with low level of perceived preceptor's empathy had low job satisfaction, high job stress, and high degree of turnover intention, and their perceived preceptor's empathy affected job stress and turnover intention. Based on these results, we suggest the introduction of a program to enhance empathy for new graduate nurses and preceptors.
This study seeks to verify how empathic concern and perspective-taking predict happiness by investigating the mediating effects of cognitive reappraisal. Online surveys about empathic concern, perspective-taking, cognitive reappraisal, and happiness were conducted by 336 adult subjects. First, the correlation analysis indicated that empathic concern and perspective-taking significantly predicted cognitive reappraisal and happiness, respectively. Second, cognitive reappraisal also significantly predicted happiness. Third, the cognitive reappraisal mediated the association between empathic concern and happiness and between perspective-taking and happiness. Specifically, people who emotionally and cognitively empathize with others reported higher levels of cognitive reappraisal, which allowed them to experience higher levels of happiness. These findings have confirmed that people can increase their happiness by enhancing cognitive reappraisal through emotional and cognitive empathy. Finally, the implications and limitations of the present research are discussed.
To develop a more efficient computer-based empathy program that enables medical students to increase their empathy levels, and to test its applicability to medical students. We developed PACP (the Pain Assessment Computer Program) for measurement of medical students' levels of recognition of another's pain. An empathy questionnaire was administered to 145 medical students before and after the PACP. In the high empathy group, the scores for cognitive empathy increased significantly after completion of the PACP, while affective empathy scores showed no significant change. In contrast, in the low empathy group, both cognitive and affective empathy scores increased significantly after the PACP. The PACP effectively increased cognitive empathy for the high empathy group, and increased both cognitive and affective empathy, particularly for the low empathy group. Given the fact that existing empathy education programs are time-consuming and costly, and the demand for more efficient empathy education is high, the PACP as a useful tool can be applicable to medical students, particularly those with low empathy in order to enhance their empathic abilities within a short period of time.
This fMRI study is aim to investigate effects of competitive environment in cognitive empathic process in human brain. Empathy is known as a crucial factor for human's adaptive behavior in aspects of social cognition and it is almost automatic process, on the other hand competitive situation is psychologically devastated environment to win someone for getting rewards. We hypnotized that reading and understanding of other person's mind are a specific characteristic related to survival evolutionarily, however competition would have an effect on the empathic cognitive process because of mechanisms of competition. To manipulate the competitive atmosphere, one researcher took a role of competitor against participants and they were instructed to get monetary rewards when their performance was better than a competitor. 21 participants(9 males and 12 females) performed to judge the emotional valence of the empathic task consisted of illustrated images with various situation could be experienced in real world as on $1^{st}$ person perspective in both competitive and non-competitive condition, and did same performance with objects stimulus in control condition. In order to examine the competition effects on empathic process,, hemodynamic response were obtained during fMRI session and the imaging data were analyzed to identify brain regions where responses to each condition across the two consecutive runs. Participants' reaction time in competitive condition was faster statistically significant than non-competitive one. Activation for competitive condition increased in the following areas: ACC, mPFC, SMG, thalamus extended caudate and Nacc, parahippocampal gyrus, and for non-competitive condition increased paracingulate gyrus, temporal pole, vmPFC, superior occipital gyrus. As a result of regression analysis using empathic scores as covariance, the rSMG, IFG, fusiform gyrus, thalamus, putamen were correlated with higher empathic levels, and TPJ were correlated with lower empathic scores. We suggest that these observations could mean competitive environment have an effect on neural base of cognitive empathic process.
This research was conducted to examine the effects of cognitive and emotional empathy amongst employees, and its contribution to the enhancement of the effectiveness of an organization. Further, 'job stress' was used as the moderating value. For this purpose, examination procedures were based on theoretical ground drawn from previous research papers, and an appropriate hypothesis established. Statistical methods were also employed to obtain empirical evidence. This study consisted of four variables. The independent variable is categorised into the factors of cognitive and emotional empathy. Job stress as the moderating value as well as job satisfaction and turnover intention as members of the dependent variable. A survey was carried out targeting employees of numerous firms working in teams, and a total of 324 samples were collected and processed by the software package SPSS 21 for windows as a means to verify the set study model and hypothesis. The results of the study are as follows: The two factor of cognitive and emotional empathy did not present with any significant effects. However, cognitive empathy in relation to job stress was found to inflict negative effects. The study also found the two factors to play a significant role in asserting positive effects on an individual's level of satisfaction on his/her job. While the study further explained that cognitive understanding had the tendency to impose negative effects on the turnover intention, emotional empathy did not demonstrate significant effects. Job related stress negatively effects the level of satisfaction of an individual's given task or a job and positive relation with turnover intention. It was confirmed that job stress had a degree of intermediary role upon other factors such as empathy, job satisfaction and turnover intention. The results of the study purported that empathy can raise the level of an individual's job satisfaction and kerb turnover intention. In order to accomplish depreciated levels of job related stress, it is vital that firms consistently input fervent endeavours to be subserved. It must be able to create an environment wherein employees may enjoy the improved structure of the company to empathies with each other. The purpose of the convergence study is to provide basic data for improving job satisfaction of speech and language therapists by identifying the relationship between personal characteristics, empathy ability, and job satisfaction of speech and language therapists, especially between cognitive and emotional empathy ability and job satisfaction. The subjects of the study were 111 people of speech and language therapists working in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. For data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS/PC 21.0 statistical program according to the purpose of the study. As a result of the study, the relationship between empathy ability and job satisfaction was found to be high, and there was a high correlation between cognitive and emotional empathy ability, which is a sub-factor of empathy ability, and job satisfaction. Therefore, follow-up research is needed to identify the empathy and job satisfaction about nationwide speech and language therapists for implementing various education programs and improving empathy skills in the future.
The purpose of this research was to identify the relationship between specific personality characteristics and maladaptive social behaviors in order to contribute to development of a pragmatic intervention for the prevention of sexual aggression. This was accomplished by examining the mediating effects of entitlement rage (K-PNI) or sociosexuality (K-MSAS) on sexual aggression, and moderating effects of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (K-CERQ) or state empathy (K-CMEM) on sexual aggression in narcissistic men. Data were obtained from male college students (n = 264) who completed self-report questionnaires, such as K-NPI and K-CMEM, and hierarchical regression analysis was applied to examine these relationships. Both entitlement rage and cognitive emotion regulation strategies were found to be unassociated with sexual aggression. Rather, sociosexuality was the mediating factor between narcissism and sexual aggression, Whereas state empathy was a moderating factor between narcissism and sexual aggression. These findings indicate a tendency for sociosexuality to increase sexual aggression in males. However, individuals with low state empathy are more likely to show sexual aggression than those with high state empathy, indicating that intervention for increased state empathy may be a more effective treatment than cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of multicultural contact experience and ethnocultural empathy on multicultural acceptance in nursing students. Participants were nursing students in 3 universities in C city and data were collected from November 15 to December 20, 2017. Data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis using SPSS Win 23.0. It was found that: (a) multicultural acceptability had a positive correlation with emotional empathy(r=.56, <.001), cognitive empathy(r=.40, <.001), and experience of multicultural contact(r=.16, p=.040; (b) factors influencing multicultural acceptance were emotional empathy and cognitive empathy with 37.3% explanatory power. This study shows that emotional and cognitive empathy have positive effect on multicultural acceptance. This result may be useful in developing new strategies for enhancing multicultural acceptance.
