  • Blends of poly (acrylic acid-co-maleic acid)(PAM) with poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) were obtained by solution blending. The blends were solvent-on to a film to examine thermo-mechanical properties and gas permeability. The transition temperatures $(T_g\;and\;T_m)$ of the blends remained constant regardless of PAM contents. However, the values of enthalpy changes corresponding to melting transition $({\Delta}H_m)$ and initial degradation temperature $({T_D}^i)$ were decreased with increasing PAM content. The values of ultimate strength and initial modulus gave the maximum value at the 12 wt% PAM then decreased with further increase of PAM content up to 15 wt%. To measure the gas permeability of the PVA/PAM blend films, the PVA blend solutions were coated onto both biaxially oriented propylene (BOPP) and poly (ethylene terephthalate)(PET) films. The oxygen transmission rate $(O_2\;TR)$ permeability values mono- tonically decreased with increasing PAM content. However, moisture vapor transmission rate was not affected by PAM content.

  • No-fines concrete is concrete from which the fine aggregate fraction has been omitted. The concrete so formed, consisting only of coarse aggregate, cement, and water, has large voids uniformly distributed through its mass. This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to the use of no-fines concrete. The data was based on the properties of no-fines concrete depending upon various mixing ratios. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Test result of the consistency, suitable water-cement ratio was increased with the increasing of mixing ratio. 2. At the suitable water-cement ratio, the highest strengths were showed. But it gradually was decreased with the increasing of mixing ratio and strengths are considerably lower than that of conventional portland cement concrete. 3. The relations between compressive and tensile strength were highly singnificant as a straight line shaped. The strength ratio was decreased with the increasing of mixing ratio and considerably lower than of conventional portland cement concrete. 4. Bulk density was decreased with the increasing of the mixing ratio, and was similar to that of the conventional portland cement concrete at mixing ratio 1:4. 5. The relations between strength and bulk density were highly significant as a straight line shaped. The decreasing ratio of strengths was higher than that of bulk density.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of various methods of dentin bonding agent application and air abrasion pretreatment on microtensile bond strength between dentin and resin, using a self-etching adhesive system. Material and methods: Thirty freshly extracted human molars were obtained and divided into 6 groups of 5 teeth. A 2-step self etching adhesive system (Clearfil SE Bond) was used for all groups. The control specimens were prepared using a direct immediate bonding technique. The delayed dentin sealing specimens were prepared using an indirect approach without dentin prebonding. The immediate dentin sealing specimens were prepared using dentin prebonding immediately following preparation. Immediate dentin sealing teeth and delayed dentin sealing teeth had provisional restorations using Fermit for two weeks. Then all specimens of each group were divided into two groups of three, depending on air abrasion pretreatment. Composite "crowns" were incrementally built on and specimens were stored in water for 24 hours. All teeth were prepared for a microtensile bond strength test. Bond strength data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA test, and post hoc comparison was done using the Scheffe's test. Results: The mean microtensile bond strengths of all groups were not statistically different from each other. Conclusion: When preparing teeth for indirect restorations, IDS and DDS with Clearfil SE bond, have no difference on the microtensile bond strength between dentin and resin. Air abrasion pretreatment did not affect the microtensile bond strength when using IDS and DDS with Clearfil SE bond.

  • The application of FRP wire as a mean of improving strength and ductility capacity of concrete cylinders under axial compressive load through confinement is investigated experimentally in this study. An experimental investigation involves axial compressive test of three confining amounts of FRP wire and three concrete compressive strengths. The effectiveness of FRP wire confinement on the concrete microstructure were examined by evaluating the internal concrete damage using axial, circumferential, and volumetric strains. The axial stress-strain relations of FRP wire confined concrete showed bilinear behavior with transition region. It showed strain-hardening behavior in the post-cracking region. The load carrying capacity was linearly increased with increasing of the amount of FRP wire. The ultimate strength of the 35 MPa specimen confined with 3 layer of FRP wire was increased by 286% compared to control one. When the concrete were effectively confined with FRP wire, horizontal cracks were formed by shearing. It was developed from sudden expansion of the concrete due to confinement ruptures at one side while the FRP wire was still working in hindering expansion of concrete at the other side of the crack. The FRP wire failure strains obtained from FRP wire confined concrete tests were 55~90%, average 69.5%, of the FRP wire ultimate uniaxial tensile strain. It was as high as any other FRP confined method. The magnitude of FRP wire failure strain was related to the FRP wire effectiveness.

  • Since ultra-high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC) not only represents high early age shrinkage strain due to its low water-to-binder ratio (W/B) and high fineness admixture usage but also reduces the cross section of structure from the higher mechanical properties, it generally has more shrinkage cracks from the restraints of formwork and reinforcing bars. In this study, free and restrained shrinkage experiments were conducted to evaluate the suitability of incorporating both expansive admixture (EA) and shrinkage reducing agent (SRA). The test results indi-cated that approximately 40~44% of free shrinkage strain was decreased. Also, the results showed that 35% and 47% of residual tensile stresses were relieved by synergetic effect of SRA and EA, respectively. Residual tensile stresses from ringtest were relaxed by approximately 61% and 64% of elastic shrinkage stresses due to SRA and EA, respectively, because of the tensile creep effect. Therefore, the creep effect should be considered to precisely estimate the restrained shrinkage behavior of concrete structures. The degree of restraint of UHPCC was approximately in the range of 0.78~0.85. The addition of combined EA and SRA showed minute influence on the degree of restraint. However, the effect decreased when thicker concrete ring was used. Tensile creep strains were measured and compared to the predicted values from 4-parametric prediction model considering time dependent restrained forces.

  • The objectives of this study were to develope the uncooked-restructured belly (URB) and the processed-restructured bacon (PRB) using a protein-emulsion material (PEM) from pork, and to evaluate the quality characteristics of the URB and PRB. The PEM used to adhere muscle and fat tissues was prepared with a salt-soluble protein and emulsions (ratio 9:1). In color measurements, L$\^$*/, a$\^$*/ and b$\^$*/ values were significantly (p<0.05) higher in URB than PRB. There was no significant difference in L$\^$*/ value between PRB from fresh pork and PRB from thaw pork PRB showed significantly (p<0.05) higher water holding capacity compared to URB. Tensil strength of PRB was also significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of URB. However, PRB from thawed pork marked the lowest color score among restructured meats in sensory evaluation. The scores of juiciness and tenderness were significantly (p<0.05) Higher in URB compared to PRB. Consequently URB had significantly (p.<0.05) higher score of overall acceptability than PRB. These results suggested that URB made with PEM could have a better sensory characteristics compared to PRB. Results also suggested that the PEM would not be enough to adhere fresh muscle and fat tissues as much as PRB, even though the possibility of PEM was confirmed as a meat glue.

  • In this study, a standard tensile welded-joint test was conducted to select a welding electrode suitable for recently developed HSA800 steel. Two welding electrodes were available at the time of this study; one was GMAW-based and the other FCAW-based. The tensile test specimens were fabricated by joining 60mm-thick HSA800 plates according to the AWS-prequalified groove welded joint details. Specimens which violate the standard root opening distance (ROD) were also included to see if poor construction tolerance could be accommodated. During fabrication, serious concerns about the welding efficiency of the GMAW-based product were raised by a certified welder. Both welding electrodes showed satisfactory and similar performance from welded joint strength perspective. But groove welded joints made by using the FCAW-based rod consistently showed more ductile and stable behavior. The AISC provisions for PJP joint strength were shown to be very conservative under direct tensile loading. Violating the AWS prequalified ROD by 100% apparently passed the strength criteria, but unusual crater-like fracture surface was observed.

  • 0.4wt%C steel added with V and/or Nb were forged and followed by air cooling. The structure-property relationships were examined and multiple regression analysis was conducted to quantify the magnitudes of effects of microalloying elements on the properties of the steels. All material's tensile strength are greater than $70kg/\textrm{mm}^2$, so they are equal to or superior to Q/T material's(S45C). Their impact energies are less than 40J, so they are 50% of Q/T material's. Increasing the content of V from 0.10 to 0.15 wt% had brought improvement in UTS about 20% but with some sacrifice of impact energy. These were the results from the precipitation strengthening by fine dispersion of VC in ferrite, increment of pearlite volume fraction and decrement of pearlite interlamellar spacings. However, increasing the content of Nb from 0.05 to 0.l0wt % slightly improved UTS and impact energy. NbC precipitates were more effective in suppression of austenite grain coarsening than VC precipitates. Combined additions of V+Nb were more effective to bring impact toughness than sole addition. Optimum combination of strength and toughness was accomplished wish 0.4C-1. 19Mn-0.05S-0.12V-0.07Nb steel.

  • Super-critical $CO_2$ ($S-CO_2$) Brayton cycle has been considered to replace the current steam Rankine cycle in Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) in order to improve the inherent safety and thermal efficiency. Several austenitic alloys are considered as the structural materials for high temperature $S-CO_2$ environment.. Microstructural change after long-term exposure to high temperature $S-CO_2$ environment could affect to the mechanical properties. In this study, candidate materials (austenitic stainless steels and Alloy 800HT) were exposed to $S-CO_2$ to assess oxidation resistance and the change in tensile properties. Loss of ductility was observed for some austenitic stainless steels even after 250 h exposure. The contribution of $S-CO_2$ environment on such changes was analyzed based on the characterization of the surface oxide and carburization of the materials in which 316H and 800H showed different oxidation behaviors.

  • Edible films were prepared from proteins extracted from soybean curd residue by alkaline extraction and isoelectric precipitation. Effects of film forming solution pH and plasticizers on mechanical and barrier properties of edible films were studied. films were formed within pH $7{\sim}11$ with tensile strength (TS) of $2.9{\sim}3.3$ MPa. Films produced under pH 10 had the highest TS and Elongation (E) (3.3 MPa and 60.1%) but no significant difference was observed among water vapor permeabilities (WVP) of film. Glycerol, sorbitol and its mixture (1:1, w/w) were added as plasticizers. The concentration and mixing ratio of plasticizers also affected the TS, E and WVP of films. TS of films decreased from 15.0 MPa to 2.9 MPa as plasticizer concentration increased from 0.4 to 0.8 g plasticizer/g protein. At a plasticizer concentration, the highest TS was observed when sorbitol was used whereas the highest E was measured when mixture of glycerol and sorbitol was used as plasticizer WVP of films increased as the plasticizer concentration increased. Films plasticized with glycerol showed the highest WVP among the films with the same plasticizer concentrations. Edible films prepared from soybean curd residue protein showed very low oxygen permeabilities ($29.5{\sim}61.1aL{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$) and oil resistance at all plasticizer concentration level tested.
