  • In this study, an adhesive tape with water and impact resistance for mobile devices was developed using a UV-curable urethane acrylate based polymer as a substrate. The substrate fabricated by UV-curable materials shows hydrophobicity and poor wettability, which significantly deteriorates the interface-adhesions between the substrate and acrylic adhesive. In order to improve the interface adhesion, 3-glycidoxy-propyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), a silane coupling agent having epoxy functional groups, was selected and incorporated into UV-curable urethane acrylate based polymer resins in various contents. The changes of the chemical composition according to the contents of GPTMS was studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to know the surface bonding properties. Also mechanical properties of the substrate were characterized by tensile strength, gel fraction and water contact angle measurements. The peel strengths at 180° and 90° were measured to compare the adhesion between the substrate and adhesive according to the silane coupling agent contents. The mechanical strength of the urethane acrylate adhesive tape decreased as the silane coupling agent increased, but the adhesion between the substrate and adhesives increased remarkably at an appropriate content of 0.5~1 wt%.

  • Various types of re-bar splicing methods have been developed and applied to reinforced concrete (RC) structures in the field. According to previous studies, the coupler splice is relatively superior to the lap splice in terms of cost efficiency when the diameter or strength of the re-bar is larger or higher. This study was performed to develop a filler type mechanical splice for a high-strength re-bar (SD600) in reinforced concrete structures. The deformed re-bars were inserted into a circular steel tube coupler and high-strength epoxy filler was then injected into the coupler. The splice system was completed by hardened filler in a coupler. The epoxy filler was used as the manufactured production epoxy to conduct experiments of filler type mechanical splice specimens, and to observe the failure loads and failure aspects of the specimens. For this goal, the experiment of one-way tensile test was conducted for the epoxy filler type mechanical splices specimens according to the compressive strength of epoxy, length of coupler, and diameter of re-bar. The shape of failure of the re-bar coupler splice showed that the re-bars were pulled between the lugs of the re-bars as a result of the shear fracture of the hardened epoxy. The actual failure load of the experiment specimen was approximately 2 times higher than the expected failure load of the epoxy filler, which greatly improves the failure load of the hardening epoxy filler due to the restraint of the steel coupler.

  • Epoxy resin has the disadvantage of being easily destroyed by instantaneous impact due to its high crosslinking density despite its high glass transition temperature (Tg) and excellent properties. To compensate for this, in this study, polyol was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of propylene glycol (PPG) diamine, Jeffamine D 2000 and propylene carbonate, and urethane modified epoxy was synthesized using this. The properties of the synthesized urethane modified epoxy were confirmed by FT-IR, H-NMR. To confirm the degree of improvement in impact resistance as an adhesive, a urethane modified epoxy adhesive was prepared by mixing a digylcidyl ether bisphenol A (DGEBA) with curing agent and curing accelerator. Properties test of urethane modified epoxy were shear strength, tensile strength and impact strength. As a result, excellent results were obtained in all test when the ratio of DGEBA : urethane modified epoxy was 8:2.

  • In this study, when strand specimens were manufactured using an automatic winding device to obtain uniform strand specimens, analysis and test were conducted to investigate the effect of thermal expansion of the mandrel on strand specimens. Also, necessity of changing materials and mandrel configuration was checked. According to the results, strand specimen received unintended tension that was created by thermal expansion of the mandrel and this unintended tension depended on the curing temperature and position of specimens. Tensile test was conducted to check that initial tension affected on the performance of carbon fiber tow prepreg. All other conditions were fixed and only the initial tension was controlled at 40 N, 60 N, and 80 N. From the results of analysis and test, neither additional tension and tension deviation due to the thermal expansion of the mandrel and the initial tension difference had a significant effect on tensile test results, because carbon fiber had sufficiently high strength compared with tension. Therefore, it was confirmed that the change of the mandrel material and configuration of the automatic winding device was unnecessary.

  • The objective of this study is to develop polymer-impregnated concrete(PIC), which is a newly developed composite material made by impregnating polymer impregnanls into hardened normal concrete, and to develop analytical techniques for its proper applications. Crystalline methyl methacrylate(MMA) is chosen as a monomer of polymer impregnants. The corrlpositions of polymer impregnants and producing processes are developed by analyzing the effects of penetration, polymerization, thermal safety, and strengthening characteristics. On t he basis of experimental results of this study, various strength characteristics and stress strain constitutive relations are formulated in terms of the compressive strength of normal concrete and the polymer loadings, which can be applied for analysis and design of PIC members. In order to provide a model for fracture analysis of flexural members, fracture toughness, fracture energy, critical crack width, and tension softening relations near crack tip are also formulated in terms of member depth, initial notch depth, and the flexural strength of normal concrete. The structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program developed in the study are applicable to evaluate elastic behavior, ultimate strength, and tension softening behavior of MMA type PIC structural members subject to various loading conditions. The accuracy and effectiveness of the developed computer program is examined by comparing the anal ytical results with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the developed structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program are applicable to analysis and design of in-situ and precast PIC structural members.

  • FRP Hybrid Bar, composed of an embedded steel and the coated composites with epoxy and glass fiber, is an effective construction material with tension-hardening performance and lightweight. The epoxy exposed to UV(Ultra Violet Rays) and FT(Freezing and Thawing) action easily shows a surface deterioration, which can cause degradation of bonding strength between inside-steel and outside-concrete. In the present work, surface inspection for 3 different samples of normal steel, FRP Hybrid Bar before UV, and FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test was performed, then concrete samples with 3 reinforcement types were prepared for accelerated FT test. Through visual inspection on 3 typed reinforcement, no significant deterioration like chalking was evaluated. The results from FT test to 120 and 180 cycles showed FRP Hybrid Bar exposed to UV test has higher bonding strength than normal steel by 106.3% due to enlarged bond area by silica coating. The 3 cases showed a similar bond strength tendency with increasing FT cycles, however a relatively big deviations of bond strength were evaluated in FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test due to loss of silica coating.

  • To improve the poor mechanical and thermal properties of conventional PMMA bone cement, we impregnated three types of polyethylenes (PE) (200, 3,800, and 8,000 kg/mol). MMA/xylene solution was used to modify the surfaces of PEs and new composite PMMA bone cements were manufactured by impregnating 3 wt% of the surface-modified PEs into conventional PMMA bone cement. As molecuar weigth of PE increased, tensile strengths of the manufactured composite PMMA bone cements were improved. Also, we confirmed that the curing temperatures of the composite PMMA bone cements decreased from near $100^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$.

  • Thin Spray-on Liners(TSLs) based on polymer materials have been considered as an alternative to shotcrete and wire mesh in relatively fair rock conditions, and used in mines since 1990s. Nevertheless, Few experimental studies on their mechanical properties necessary for the evaluation of their bearing capacities as a support member have been carried out. In this study, tensile and bond strengths of two kinds of TSLs with different material compositions were measured at the age of 7 days. In addition, two kinds of bending tests proposed by EFNARC (2008) to simulate representative failure mechanisms of TSLs were carried out on the same materials and curing age as in tension and pull-out tests. From the tests, tensile strength of a TSL is shown to increase as its content of polymer is higher. In contrast, its bond strength seems to be in inverse proportion to its polymer content. Especially, the TSL material in which a cementitious component is included with relatively smaller polymer content shows a faster hardening characteristic which results in higher resistance to de-bonding between a TSL and a substrate. As a result, it is shown that the performance of TSLs might be dependent upon its corresponding polymer content.

  • Recently, earthquakes have frequently occurred near Korean peninsula. An experimental study is needed for developing a reinforcing method for seismic strengthening to apply to RC structures. Recently, PolyUrea (PU) as structural reinforcement materials has been receiving great interest from construction industry. The reinforcing effect of PU appeared to be excellent under blast and impact as well as earthquakes. In this study, Flexible Type PolyUrea (FTPU) developed in preceding studies was modified to develop Stiff Type PolyUrea (STPU) by varying the ratio of the components of prepolymer and hardener of FTPU. The material performance evaluation has been performed through hardening time, tensile strength and percent elongation test, pull-off test, and shore hardness test. The experimental results showed that STPU has higher tensile strength and lower elongation than FTPU. Therefore, STPU coating agent can be used for semi-permanent products. By using STPU with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) on concrete columns, confinement effect can be enhanced to maximize seismic strength and ductility.

  • Steel Fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete (SFRSCC) has been widely used in a number of structures, such as ordinary civil infrastructures, sky scrapers, nuclear power plants, hospitals, dams, channels and etc. Thanks to its short and discrete reinforcing fibers, its performance, including tensile strength, ductility, toughness and flexural strength gets much better in comparison with ordinary self-compacting concrete (SCC) without any reinforcing fibers. Despite all these aforementioned advantages of SFRSCC, its performance highly depends on fiber's orientation. In case of short discrete fibers, the orientation of fibers is completely random and cannot be controlled during pumping process. If fibers distribution inside hardened state concrete are randomly distributed, it leads to less resistance potential of concrete element, especially in terms of flexural and tensile strength. The maximum expected strength may not be achieved. Therefore, fiber alignment has been considered as one of the important factors in SFRSCC. To address this issue, this study investigates the effects of concrete matrix's density and inlet velocity on fiber alignment during the pumping process using a finite element method.
