  • The purpose of this study was to understand characteristics of groups vulnerable to extreme heat and to reduce mortality caused by high temperature. For this purpose, relationship between socioeconomic factors and mortality-threshold temperatures were studied. The study area was limited to Seoul (South Korea) and climate data from 2000 to 2010 was used. Our results indicate that mortality-threshold temperatures for regions with a high proportion of aging population and a low proportion of aging population are $27.6^{\circ}C$ and $27.9^{\circ}C$, respectively. It was also found that a relative size of welfare dependant population did not affect mortality-threshold temperatures. However, regions with a high proportion of aging and welfare dependant population experienced $0.7^{\circ}C$ lower mortality-threshold temperature than other regions. This implies that low income and older people in Seoul are more easily affected by high temperature. Thus, this study suggests that it needs a policy targeted to low income and aging population to decrease mortality rate caused by extreme heat.

  • The aim of this study is to consider the degree of supply-demand balance in relation to the characteristics of retail sale activities in depopulation aging regions and the degree of aging by using simple regression analysis. The major findings of this study are as follows. While aging society, and aged society regions show a similar major retail sale industries, super-aged society shows fewer major industries and different industry composition. These characteristics are seen by different phenomenon and the background of the particular retail structure. The first one is that the number of employees per establishment increases when the aging phenomenon is not accelerated, and the annual sales per capita purchasing power decrease because their purchasing power becomes lower when the aging phenomenon is severe, but it also shows a high density of establishments because disperse location of establishment within depopulation aging region. The second one is the retail structure with high labor productivity in a aged and superaged society region. We identify the extent of demand and supply in general retails, fuel retails, food and beverage, and tobacco retails which represent the highest sales rates in depopulation aging region. As a result, general retails are seen as 'supply-demand balance region' in aged and super-aged society, fuel retail sales in aged and super-aged society which generally shows less sales, and food and beverages, and tobacco retails in super-aged society. The higher the degree of aging is, the less the regional differences in the gap between demand and supply is. This is because the difference in purchasing power between these regions is small.

  • This study attempts to introduce the methodology for accounting real-time population distribution in the urban areas. For the purpose, we utilize the media user's time-space information from the media users' media diaries in the media panel survey databases. We analyze the space-time population rate for each activity space related with everyday urban lifes. Seoul has been selected as a case study area, since space-time information are relatively rich there, and thus the comparisons are available. The space-time population rates have been verified by the comparative analysis with the T-card results. We propose a real time population measurement method by combination of the space-time population rate with geographical data. The real time population of each activity space at each dong in Seoul has been calculated by multiplying the space-time population rates to the numbers of employer of three categories of activity spaces(residential, working, and commercial). By utilizing GIS, we visualize the results of two time points (3AM and 3PM) and then analyze the spacio-temporal characteristics of real time population distribution in Seoul. The Day time population distribution pattern shows strong relationships with the distribution of business and commercial activities, while the night time population distribution pattern can be explained by resident population distribution almost perfectly.

  • This paper attempts to analyze the changes of the contents in foreign area research carried out by Korean geographers, and discuss the task of the new regional geography in a global-local context. As compared with domestic area research, only a scant of foreign area research has been carried out. In the 1990's, the research interests are paid to how an open economy affects the regional economy, especialy the production technique, division of labor, industrial mix, market strategy, industrial location and organization, and so on. Unfortunately, however, the boundaries between economic geography and regional economy are gradully disappearing.

  • With the trend of urban polynucleation, the issue of detecting economic clusters or urban employment centers has been considered as crucial. However, the prior researches had some limitations in detecting economic clusters in the empirical analysis: i.e. inherent inefficiency of density-based clustering methods, difficulty in detecting linear types of spatial clusters and lacks of consideration of economic significance. The purpose of this paper is to propose the clustering method with the procedure of testing statistical and economic significance named as VCEC (Variable Clumping method for Economic Clusters) and to apply it to a case analysis of Erie County, New York, in order to test its validity. By applying a search radius and a total employment as an economic threshold, 'the both statistically and economically significant clusters' were detected in the Erie County, and proved to be efficient.

  • The substantial economic expansion of the 1990s with the dramatic changes in the provision of welfare services in America, including welfare services for the homeless, had unexpected and differential impacts on homelessness and poverty rates across the states. This paper examines a spatial pattern and process of homelessness by counties in Maryland, USA, considering the spatial differences in the composition of financial income and expenditure with sharply different poverty situation and welfare services. This social geographical approach of homelessness in Maryland focuses on the changing personal characteristics of homeless people and the relation=hip between homelessness and poverty; homelessness and the provision of welfare services such as shelter beds and emergency food providers. It makes a conclusion that there is an uneven sociospatial patterns of homelessness, relating to diverse poverty situation and provision of welfare services for the homeless by variable welfare policy among counties, Maryland.

  • Gentrification, the revitalization of inner city areas, encompasses both the changes in social and demographic composition and the alterations in the physical and economic nature of built environment. This urban phenomenon has received the bulk of attention since the 1970s, and simultaneously provided one prominent stage for the theoretical or ideological debates in the field of urban geography. Given this context, this paper deals with the consumption-based and production-based approaches to gentrification, both of which are involved in such debates. Specifically, this paper critically reviews and evaluates David Ley's and Neil Smith's explanations representing the two approaches, respectively. On the basis of the two urban geographers' seminal works published in the 1980s, this paper discusses the limitations of each explanation as a partial explanation.

  • This paper analyzes the drought and restriction on water supply in Taebaek City during the winter season in 2008 using Actor-Network Theory. Actor-Network Theory emphasizes and brings into view the role and act of non-human actors as well as human actors in various environmental issues. The fact that only Taebaek experienced restriction on water supply for 88 days although the winter season drought in 2008 affected the whole nation, requires a synthetic analysis of both human and non-human actors and their relationships and networks embedded in Taebaek City at that time. This paper shows that both human and non-human actors including Taebaek City Hall, Korea Water Resource Corporation, Taebaek citizen, the water supply facilities, Gwangdongdam, obsolete water pipes, the topography of Taebaek, soil, the change of industry, and population interact one another transforming the geography of water in Taebaek. This study helps to understand the complex processes related to drought disasters at a specific local scale and to provide appropriate measures to drought.

  • The purpose of this study is to present implications using local government data, focusing on the occurrence of empty houses, one of the serious social problems emerging due to population extinction and aging. The subjects of the study were Mokpo-si, which has the highest percentage of empty houses in the country, and the spatial distribution status was identified by schematizing the status of empty houses by grade on a map through data from the local government's survey on empty houses. As a result of the survey on vacant houses, it was confirmed that 90% of empty houses in Mokpo City were included in the project district of the urban regeneration strategy plan underway in Mokpo City. Currently, the empty house maintenance project is difficult to proceed smoothly due to difficulties in purchasing empty houses and lack of budget for local governments, so in order for the project to proceed quickly, it is necessary to come up with a plan to promote the project in connection with the urban regeneration strategy plan in Mokpo.
