For this empirical analysis, the data was collected from 230 divorced men and women in their 20s and 30s who lived in the Seoul metropolitan area from Sep. 23rd to Oct. 20th, 2002. The questionnaire for the survey dealt with demographic information and other scales. The major findings of the research project were as follows: First, although men and women experienced a similar level of pre-divorce conflicts, women were more likely to want to divorce. Second, although women had worse physical and psychological condition and more difficult problems than men after divorce, women more readily accepted their divorce reality than men. Divorce was not the best but the second best way to escape from a bad marriage for women. The results of the current research are expected to contribute to the pre-marital preparation and divorce adjustment programs.

  • This study aims to examine how newly married couple's financial position influence the decision of divorce by using data from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). In particular, we closely examine the period between marriage and divorce for the households married since 2000. As a measure of household financial position, we focus on hosing debts because it can be considered as one of the most important factors for newly married couples. The key findings are as follows. First of all, age for marriage, age gaps between husband and wife and education level have a vital influence on the decision of divorce. In addition, in general, the household debts have decisive and negative effects on the future divorce decision. Especially, not only high absolute amount of debt but also high relative debt to household total income bring about a decision of divorce. The findings of this study suggest that systematic debt relief policies for newly married couples would be needed to build healthy family.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the life experiences of fifteen marriage immigrant Asian women who went through running away from their home countries, marrying with Korean men, divorcing from their husbands, and coping with many difficulties after their divorce in Korean society. In order to conduct this study grounded theory methods have been employed. The central phenomenon digged out from this study was 'resistance to baffled reality' (i. e. dislocation). The causal conditions which brought about the central phenomenon were 'escaping for survival' and 'experiencing the gap between reality and expectation. 'The intervening conditions included 'getting to know the reality of their husbands,' 'losing hope,' and 'not being able to pull themselves together.' The contextual conditions consisted of 'being treated as maids,' 'becoming victims of family violence,' 'making up their minds to survive,' 'securing future life,' 'being marginalized,' and 'being aware of themselves as strangers.' The action/interaction strategies on the central phenomenon were 'building support systems,' 'building up will for new life,' and 'reconstructing social identity.'The final outcome was 'arranging places of new settlement.' The divorce was classified as four types: 'coping and growth,' 'emancipation and settling down,' 'being overwhelmed by livelihood,' and 'continuous wandering.' Based on these results, this study provided a few political and practice suggestions to prevent family violence and divorces among multi-cultural families, and also to bumper the impacts of divorce.
