  • The fractions of protein, albumin, globulin, oryzenin, and prolamine extracted from 20 varieties of rice were determined, which include upland and paddy rice with both waxy and nonwaxy types. The protein content is higher in the waxy type and especially in upland rice. The content of oryzenin and albumin were likewise higher in the waxy and upland types. The results were discussed in the view point of nutrition.

  • 1. The purified soybean hemagglutinin isolated from Korean soybean through the calcium phosphate column chromatography was found to contain mannose (4.9%) and glucosamine (1.1%) added to the protein portion. 2. The fractions I,II,III, the impurities accompanied by hemagglutinin during the final purification were proved to be new plant glycoproteins that were seemingly paper electrophoretically homogeneous and had the same mobility. 3. The carbohydrate and nitrogen contents of I,II,III were 4.5%, 1.13%, 1.1% in mannose, 0.5%, 1.2%, 1.22% in glucosamine and 12.8%, 15.5%, 13.9% in nitrogen respectively.

Flow Visualization of Blood Cell and Detection of Cell Depleted Layer Using a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (공초점 레이저 주사 현미경을 이용한 혈구 유동가시화 및 세포공핍층 측정에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, we employed the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) system to visualize the blood flow field with $1{\times}1{\mu}m^2$ spatial resolution. Based on the confocal microscopic image of red blood cells (RBCs), we performed the velocity vector field measurement and evaluated characteristics of cell migration from the cell depleted layer thickness calculation. The rat and mouse's blood were supplied into a micro glass tubes in vitro. The line scanning rate of confocal microscopy was 15 kHz for a $500{\times}500$ pixels image. As a result, the red blood cell itself can be used as a tracer directly without any kind of invasive tracer particle to get the velocity vector field of blood flow by performing particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique.

  • Agricultural departmental curricular of the universities have been compared and analyzed with an exception of that of Chung Nam National University where agricultural chemistry department was established in 1979. The analysis reveals that major subjects covered by the undergraduate curricula of all the universities in agricultural cheimstry departments are in the fields of soil science, plant nutrition, agricultural chemicals, biochemistry, and fermentation technology or applied microbiology, although there are minor differences in curricula among universities. Besides, it must be pointed out that the ratio of students to teaching staffs, a significant index of the educational quality, is shown to be somewhat lower than expected for an appropriate college education. According to the analysis, the curricula of universities located in various areas in Korea do not show substantial differences among them, indicating that there is no locality. Thus, it may be recommendable to set up a unified curriculum of agricultural chemistry departments in Korea so as to achieve a balanced educational improvemet.

  • A biuret method by Johnson and Craney (1971) was slightly modified and applied to the multiple analysis of nitrogen in brown rice. The results were compared with those by the dye-binding method to see if the former be applicable to the determination of higher nitrogen content in rice. The nitrogen content of rice samples ranged from $1.2{\sim}2.0%$. The correlation between biuret absorbance and nitrogen content was highly significant; its correlation coefficient being 0.841. The biuret method, however, showed rather lower correlation coefficient in case of high nitrogen samples.

Recognition of Stance Phase for Walking Assistive Devices by Foot Pressure Patterns (족압패턴에 의한 보행보조기를 위한 입각기 감지기법)

  • In this paper, we proposed a technique to recognize three states in stance phase of gait cycle. Walking assistive devices are used to help the elderly people walk or to monitor walking behavior of the disabled persons. For the effective assistance, they adopt an intelligent sensor system to understand user's current state in walking. There are three states in stance phase; Loading Response, Midstance, and Terminal Stance. We developed a foot pressure sensor using 24 FSRs (Force Sensing/Sensitive Resistors). The foot pressure patterns were integrated through the interpolation of FSR cell array. The pressure patterns were processed to get the trajectories of COM (Center of Mass). Using the trajectories of COM of foot pressure, we can recognize the three states of stance phase. The experimental results show the effective recognition of stance phase and the possibility of usage on the walking assistive device for better control and/or foot pressure monitoring.

  • For in-depth research of blood flow, it is important to create pulsating flow like the blood flow from heart beat. In this study, we developed a heart mimicking pulsatile pump and evaluated its performances. Main body of pump was produced using a piston pump, and its rpm and duty ratio was modulated by DC motor and encoder. To determine the part dimensions, principle stress theory and simple fluidic pressure analysis were used. The performance of pulsating pump was evaluated by comparing the pressure values and their deviations according to experimental variables. For the results, the output value of pressure followed the distribution of pulsating flow and its deviation was negligible. Through this study, we expect the established pulsating pump can be widely used in study of blood flow produce easy ways to related researchers.

Static and Dynamic Stability Estimation of Diecutter (타발기의 정적 및 동적 안정성 평가)

  • In this study, static and dynamic stability estimations on the diecutter with finite element modelling were carried out to be creased and cut away printed sheet exactly. To cut away the sheet exactly, the large force should be pressured on diecutter. And which affects not only the quality of produced sheets but also the stability of diecutter. The analyses with and without the tare of diecutter were carried out with NASTRAN software on applying 400 ton force to its top and moving table respectively. It was known that maximum von-Mises stress of 221 Mpa in diecutter was occurred at the toggle, and it was smaller than the yield stress of 280 Mpa. And maximum deformation of 0.75 mm was occurred at the top table. The natural frequencies of 41, 102, 108, 115, and 134 Hz for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th mode, which had been determined by numerical simulation, were not coincided with the max. speeds of motor and moving table of 29 and 2 Hz. And which was verified by vibration test. Therefore it may be estimated that the structure of the diecutter is statically and dynamically stable.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the content of sulfur dioxide residues in the medicine prepared from crue drugs. Total 29 pills that contains salvia miltiorrhiza root, anemarrhena rhizome, fritillaria bulb, glehnia root, asparagus tuber, lycium fruit, moutan root bark, cimicifuga rhizome, pinellia tuber, dipsaci radix, codonopsis pilosula root, liriope tuber, achyranthes root, prepared aconite, aurantii fructus immaturus, corydalis tuber, dioscorea rhizome were examined by the modified Monier_Willams method. Sulfur dioxide were detectd in all the tested samples, and were found over MRLs (30 mg/ kg to medicinal herbs) in 8 samples (27.6%). Especilly, "i2" pills contains 132.46 mg/kg sulfur dioxide that is 4 times over than MRLs.

  • Rheolegical and baking properties of blends containing 10, 20 and 30 % of rice flours (Milyang 23, non-waxy and Tongil waxy) with wheat flour were investigated. Milyang-wheat blends showed higher amylograph paste viscosities at all reference points than waxy-wheat blends. Rice-wheat four blends had shorter farinograph stability than f·heat flour; however, the dough development time was similar between two blends. Breads produced from either Milyang-wheat or waxy-wheat flour blends at 10% rice level were acceptable compared with breads produced from wheat flour.
