Effect of Particle Size on the Atomic Structure of Amorphous Silica Nanoparticles: Solid-state NMR and Quantum Chemical Calculations (비정질 규산염 나노입자의 입자 크기에 따른 원자 구조 변화 : 고상 핵자기공명 분석 및 양자화학계산 연구)

  • Amorphous silica nanoparticles are among the most fundamental $SiO_2$ compounds, having implications in diverse geological processes and technological applications. Here, we explore structural details of amorphous silica nanoparticles with varying particle sizes (7 and 14 nm) using $^{29}Si$ and $^{1}H$ MAS NMR spectroscopy together with quantum chemical calculations to have better prospect for their size-dependent atomic structures. $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra at 9.4 T resolve $Q^2,\;Q^3$ and $Q^4$ species at -93 ppm, -101 ppm, -110 ppm, respectively. The fractions of $Q^2,\;Q^3,\;O^4$ species are $7{\pm}1%,\;27{\pm}2%$, and $66{\pm}2%$ for 7 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles and $6{\pm}1%,\;21{\pm}2%$, and $73{\pm}2%$ for 14 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles. Whereas it has been suggested that $Q^2$ and $Q^3$ species exist on particles surfaces, the difference in $Q^{2}\;+\;Q^{3}$ fraction in both 7 and 14 nm particles is not significant, suggesting that $Q^2$ and $Q^3$ species could exist inside particles. $^{1}H$ MAS NMR spectra at 11.7 T shows diverse hydrogen environments, including physisorbed water, hydrogen bonded silanol, and non-hydrogen bonded silanol with varying hydrogen bond strength. The hydrogen contents in the 7nm silica nanoparticles (including water and hydroxyl groups) are about 3 times of that of 14 nm particles. The larger chemical shills for proton environments in the former suggest stronger hydrogen bond strength. The fractions of non-hydrogen bonded silanols in the 14 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles are larger than those in 7 nm amorphous silica nanoparticles. This observation suggests closer proximity among hydrogen atoms in the nanoparticles with smaller diameter. The current results with high-resolution solid-state NMR reveal previously unknown structural details in amorphous silica nanoparticles with particle size.

The Effect of Work-Family Spillover on Organizational Attachment of Women Managers (여성 관리자의 일-가족전이가 조직애착에 미치는 영향 : 조직문화의 상호작용효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effects of work-family spillover on the organizational attachment of female managers. The 4th and 5th data sets of Korean Women Manager Panel Survey established by the Korean Women's Development Institute were merged and the 5th data set for female managers was analyzed. The findings reveal that work-family support relationship is an important factor for strengthening the organizational attachment on the part of female managers. For working women, organizational support and family support is the most significant driving force for retaining their career. Second, negative spillover from family to work rather than that from work to family had a stronger impact on the organizational attachment of female managers. This finding suggests that women are not free from their status in the family, and that conflict relationships originating from the family ha a stronger impact on women's organizational attachment than that generated from work. Third, the third stage model incorporates the interaction terms of work-family spillover and organizational culture. The results showed that the interaction effect alone remains. In particular, family-work positive spillover exerts positive (+) effects on the organizational attachment only if a rational organizational culture is in place. Work-family negative spillover, however, shows negative (-) effects under rational organizational culture. Family-work negative spillover combined with rational organizational culture reinforces the organizational attachment, but has negative (-) effects under traditional organizational culture. The implications might be that women may experience negative family to work spillover, which may weaken their organizational attachment and that a rational organizational culture can reverse the spillover effect and increase the organizational attachment of female managers. No interaction effect of organizational culture appears for work to family negative spillover. A differential effect by the direction of spillover requires further study. In addition, more study will be needed to develop a more integrative model with the relevant variables not included in this study and sub-group analyses will be needed to ascertain the differences within female managers.

Comparison of Different Methods of Aortic Valve Conduit Xenograft Preservation in an Animal Experiment Model; Fresh Cryopreservation versus Acellularized Cryopreservation (동물 실험 모델에서 적용한 이종대동맥판막도관의 조직보존방법 비교; 신선 냉동보존과 무세포화 냉동보존)

  • Background: The commercially used vascular xenografts have some problems such as calcification, fibrosis and tissue degeneration that are associated with inflammatory and immunologic reactions. We compared two methods of xenograft preservation (fresh cryopreservation versus acellularized cryopreservation) of goat aorta. Material and Method: Aortic valved xenografts were harvested from adult pigs, and these were preserved using fresh cryopreservation (FC group, n=4) or acellularized crypreservation (AC group, n=4). These xenografts were implanted into adult goats. There were 2 short-term survivors (less than 100 days) and 2 long-term survivors in each group. These xenografts were explanted and they underwent microscopic examination. Result: The goats survived 31, 40, 107 and 411 days in the FC group and the other goats survived 5, 40, 363 and 636 days in the AC group. All the short-term survivors in each group expired because of rupture at the proximal anastomosis site. Marked neutrophil infiltration was observed in the FC group FC and lymphocytes were observed in the AC group. There were no differences in the occurrence of calcification, fibrosis and thrombosis among the groups. Conclusion: Some goats survived more than 100 days after the xenograft implantation irrespective of the methods of preservation. Because severe tissue degeneration developed in both groups, we think these methods are not appropriate for xenograft preservation of aorta. It was worth a preliminary trial for improving the preservation method or to modify the processing of xenografts.

A Proposal to Control System and the Problems of the Problems of the Report about Supply and Demand for Medical Technicians and Management Policy ("의료기사인력수급에 관한 보고서"의 문제점과 관리제도의 개선방안)

  • Purpose: In this paper, we have analyzed the problems of the Oh's report which is used to the basic data for supply and demand of medical technicians and studied a proposal for improvement to control system and supply and demand of korean optometrists. Methods: We have analyzed errors of Oh's report including supply and demand for medical technicians and management policy, expecting number for future optician, inaccurate estimation by limited data (employment rate, retirement rate, mortality rate) and an incorrect method of measurement for future supply and demand. Results: Oh's report showed the 18% error for estimation of supply which exclude the irregular entrance students. The estimation of supply was calculated by graduation rate 62.6% (college and University of Technology are 78.9% and 85.98% respectively), employment rate 65.8% (the average employment between 2002 and 2007 is 73.96%) and retirement rate is 2.3% (the retirement of pharmacists is 1.3%) but it showed the significant differences to objective data. For estimate the suitable ratio of optometrists to the population, the ratio use of medical facilities by an age group was used, and suggested spectacle wearers 1,280 persons (populations 2,928 persons) per optometrist but the different from reference of Germany (4,706 persons), America (1,789 persons) and Korea (1,825 persons/an optometrist) are applied to estimation on supply. This report applied the low employment rate and argued that maintain the present situation, but claimed that utilize unemployment persons. The above result has induced double weighting effect on estimation of supply. Conclusions: To solve the related problems of supply and demand, we have to make a search for exact data and optimum application model, have to take an example of nation similar job category as Germany and the research result of the job satisfaction into consideration. After we get the integrated research result, we must carried out the policy with fairness and balance for the estimation of supply and demand. Therefore exact research is required prior to beginning policy establishment, government and related group have to make a clear long-term plan and permanent organization for medical technician to establish supply and demand of medical technician.
