A Study on Base Isolation Performance of Magneto-Sensitive Rubbers (자기민감 고무를 이용한 구조물의 면진성능 연구)

  • Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using Magneto-Sensitive(MS) rubbers is proposed and shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. The MS Rubber is a class of smart controllable materials whose mechanical properties change instantly by the application of a magnetic field To demonstrate the advantages of this approach, the MS Rubber isolation system is compared to Lead-Rubber Bearing(LRB) isolation systems and judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. The MS Rubber isolation system is shown to achieve notable decreases in base drifts over comparable passive systems with no accompanying increase in base shears or in accelerations imparted to the superstructure.

  • The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis method for soil-pile interaction in frequency domain problem is presented. The total soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts so called near field and far field. In the near field, beam elements are used for a pile and plain strain finite elements for soil. In the far field, dynamic fundamental solution for multi-layered half planes based on boundary element formulation is adopted for soil. These two fields are coupled using FE-BE coupling technique In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis, the dynamic responses of pile on multi-layered half planes are simulated and the results are compared with the experimental results. Also, the dynamic response analyses of interface spring elements are performed. As a result, less spring stiffness makes the natural frequency decrease and the resonant amplitude increase.

  • The ground-borne vibration from pile driving is causing many public discontents. However, because of the fact that the characteristics of wave propagation and attenuation are not well understood, systematic and effective vibration reduction measures can not be taken. This paper attempts to study the propagation of stress waves induced by the pile driving. To simulate the wave propagation in a semi-infinite domain, the so-called absorbing boundaries are incorporated in the finite element method and a series of numerical simulations is performed. Numerical results show that the surface displacement and velocity increase first and then decrease as the pile penetration depth becomes larges.

  • In this paper a study on the characteristics and the reduction method for the ground vibration due to traveling tilting car are carried out. The transmitted load which induces the ground vibration is computed through a study on the interaction between tilting car and the line. Then, this load is applied into the numerical model, which is designed considering the diverse ground conditions. Through the numerical analysis according to the conditons, the characteristics and the reduction method for the ground vibration by tilting car are studied.

  • Elastomeric bearings are frequently used as a means to isolate structural systems from earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings stiff axially but soft laterally The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling loads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed. The area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear. The result obtained from the formula is presumed to be conservative but the degree of conservatism is unknown. This paper describes a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of rubber bearings. The results from the finite element analysis which accounts for both the material and geometric non-linearities are compared against the theoretical results in order to examine the validity of the theoretical formulas.

  • 전 세계적으로 사회기반시설 및 신재생 에너지 생산을 위한 공간부족 문제를 해결하기 위하여 초대형 부유구조물에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 다양한 사용분야에 대한 안정성 확보를 위해 파랑하중에 의한 동적 응답과 부유체의 강성 대비 길이 효과로 인해 발생할 수 있는 특이 거동에 대한 분석이 필요하다. 초대형 부유구조물의 경우 중앙부에 비해 양끝 단에서 과도한 응답이 발생하며, 이를 해결하기 위해 입사파가 들어오는 초대형 부유구조물의 단부에 부착되는 다양한 감요장치(anti-motion device)가 제안되어지고 있다. 초대형 부유구조물에 감요장치가 적용될 경우 입사파에 의한 동적 파압을 감소시켜 구조물의 전반적인 응답을 줄여줄 수는 있지만 감요장치의 질량이 클 경우 오히려 끝단의 응답을 증폭시킬 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 양단 자유 경계조건의 탄성지지된 보를 이용하여 초대형 부유구조물의 길이와 끝단에 부착된 감요장치의 질량으로 인한 영향을 분석하였다.

  • For the propagation of elastic waves in unbounded domains, absorbing boundary conditions at the fictitious numerical boundaries have been proposed. In this paper we focus on both first- and second-order paraxial boundary conditions(PBCs) in the framework of variational approximations which are based on paraxial approximations of the scalar and elastic wave equations- We propose a penalty function method for the treatment of PBCs and apply these into finite element analysis. The numerical verification of the efficiency is carried out through comparing PBCs with Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer' s boundary conditions.

  • Near infrared heating as an alternative to the conventional heating techniques for thermography -NDT is tried in this paper. A concrete specimen containing a defect was heated by the near infrared ray and the thermography-NDT technique was applied. Using a dimensinless temperature, the defects were detected. It was found that the near infrared ray could efficiently heat up the concrete specimen compared to others conventional methods like lamps, heat flow, etc.

Earthquake Response Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction Systems considering Nonlinear Soil Behavior (지반의 비선형을 고려한 지반-구조물 상호작용계의 지진응답해석)

  • This paper demonstrates how nonlinear soil behavior in a soil-structure interaction system can be realistically incorporated by using a hybrid method in a nonlinear time-domain analysis. The hybrid method employs a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program coupled with a linear SSI program for the unbounded layered soil medium In order to verify the validity and applicability of the hybrid method, nonlinear earthquake response analyses are carried out for the Hualien free-field problem, in which the ground and underground accelerations were measured during several earthquake events, and for a 2-D subway station. It is found that the nonlinear earthquake responses predicted for the Hualien free-field using the hybrid method compare very well with the observed responses whereas the subway station example gives reasonable results.
