  • Concentration of nitrogen, one of the major elements, and ratio of two nitrogen forms (NH4+ and NO3-) in the nutrient solution affect the quality and food safety of fresh vegetable produce. This study was conducted to find an appropriate strength and NH4+:NO3- ratio of a nutrient solution for growth and development of a Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longiflora) 'Caesar Green', a representative leafy vegetable, grown in a home hydroponic system. In the first experiment, plants were grown using three types of nutrient solution: A commercial nutrient solution (Peters) and two strengths (GNU1 and GNU2) of a multipurpose nutrient solution (GNU solution) developed in a Gyeongsang National University lab. Plants grown with the GNU1 and GNU2 had greater shoot length, leaf length and width, and biomass yield than Peters. On the other hand, the root hairs of plants grown with Peters were short and dark in color. Tissue NH4+ content in the Peters was higher than that of the GNU1 and GNU2. The higher contents of NH4+ in this solution may have caused ammonium toxicity. In the second experiment, eight treatment solutions, combining GNU1 and GNU2 solutions with four ratios of NO3- :NH4+ named as 1, 2, 3 and 4 were used. Both experiments showed more growth in the GNU2 group, which had a relatively low ionic strength of the nutrient solution. The growth of Romaine lettuce showed the greatest fresh weight along with low tissue NO3- content in the GNU2-2. This was more advantageous in terms of food safety in that it suppressed the accumulation of surplus NO3- in tissues due to the low ionic trength of the GNU2 subgroup. In addition, this is preferable in that it can reduce the absolute amount of the input of inorganic nutrients to the nutrient solution.

  • In Korea, from January 2023, the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Food was revised to reflect the use-by-date rather than the sell-by-date. Hence, the purpose of this study was to establish a system for calculating the safety factor and determining the recommended use-by-date for each food type, thereby providing a scientific basis for the recommended use-by-date labels. A safety factor calculation technique based on scientific principles was designed through literature review and simulation, and opinions were collected by conducting surveys and discussions including industry and academia, among others. The main considerations in this study were pH, Aw, sterilization, preservatives, packaging for storage improvement, storage temperature, and other external factors. A safety factor of 0.97 was exceptionally applied for frozen products and 1.0 for sterilized products. In addition, a between-sample error value of 0.08 was applied to factors related to product and experimental design. This study suggests that clearly providing a safe use-by-date will help reduce food waste and contribute to carbon neutrality.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the effect of changes in the patient's central position on the exposure dose and image quality of surrounding organs during a chest lateral examination using an Auto Exposure Control(AEC). The experiment was conducted on a human body phantom. A needle was attached to the lower part of the center of the coronal plane of the phantom, and a lead ruler was attached to the lower part of the detector so that the 50 cm point was located at the lower center of the AEC ion chamber. The exposure conditions were 125 kVp, 320 mA, the distance between the source and the image receptor was 180 cm, and the exposure field size was 14 × 17 inches. Only one AEC ion chamber was used at the bottom center, and the density was set to '0' and sensitivity to 'Middle', and the central X-ray was incident vertically toward the 6th thoracic vertebra. With AEC mode applied, the 50 cm point of the needle and lead ruler were aligned and the phantom was moved 5 cm toward the stomach (F5) and 5 cm toward the back (B5), and the dose factor was analyzed by measuring ESD. The ESD of the thyroid gland according to the change in patient center position was 232.60±2.20 μGy for Center, 231.22±1.53 μGy for F5, and 184.37±1.19 μGy for B5, and the ESD of the breast was 288.54±3.03 μGy for Center, F5 was 260.97±1.93 μGy, B5 was 229.80±1.62 μGy, and the ESD of the center of the lung was 337.02±3.25 μGy for Center, F5 was 336.09±2.29 μGy, and B5 was 261.76±1.68 μGy. As a result of comparing the average values of dose factors between each group, the difference in average values was statistically significant (p<0.01), and each group appeared to be independent. As a result of the study, there was no significant difference in the dose to the thyroid, breast, and center of the lung according to the change in the patient's central position, except for the breast (10%) when the patient moved forward about 5 cm. However, movement of about 5 cm posteriorly resulted in an average dose reduction of 23.7%. Additionally, when the patient's central position was moved to the rear, image quality deteriorated.

  • In this study, we examined the effects of a large wildfire in the coastal area of Uljin-gun. The analysis of water quality and the dominant species, species composition, and community structure of marine algal was conducted quarterly in 2022 at Nagok (F-1), Hujeong (F-2), Bongpyeong (F-3), and Gongse Port (F-C) in Uljin-gun. As a result of water quality analysis, the pH, a factor of wildfire impact was 8.07~8.30 and 8.12~8.48 in surface and bottom layers, respectively, which are normal values in coastal waters of the East Sea, suggesting no direct impact from wildfires. By marine algal species composition, the coastal areas show the following order: Rhodophyta (58.1%) > Ochrophyta (25.8%) > Chlorophyta (14.5%) > Magnoliophyta (1.6%). By season, Undaria pinnatifida was the most dominant at Nagok and Hujeong in March and June, which in September and November, Gelidium elegans and Lithophyllum sp. were the most dominant in Bongpyeong and Gongse Port, respectively. In the cluster analysis, the stations were divided into two groups according to presence and absence of specific marine algal by season. The dominant species were U. pinnatifida, G. elegans and D. divaricata in group A, and Lithophyllum sp. was mainly present in group B. Thus, the species composition and group structure reflected the normal seasonal change pattern with water temperature variation and showed little significant difference from the control site, suggesting no direct effects of the wildfire on algae distribution in Uljin.

  • The sensitivity of forest soil to acidification in the Republic of Korea (ROK) was evaluated based on pHH2O, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation (BS). Sensitivity to acidification was categorized into three grades: adequate level (AL, pH ≧ 4.2, CEC ≧ 15cmol/kg, BS ≧ 15%), caution level (CL, at least one indicator is below AL), and severe Level (SL, all three indicators are below AL). Soil samples were collected from the 65 stationary monitoring plots (40 × 40 ㎢), distributed throughout ROK. Only 19% of soil samples were classified as AL, while 66% and 15% were CL and SL, respectively. The median of pHH2O, CEC, BS, and Ca/Al indicator in AL soils was pH 4.64, 20.7cmol/kg, 29%, and 6.3, respectively. Moreover, BCex (K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and available phosphorus (AP) concentration compared with a threshold value and molar ratio of BCex and AP to total nitrogen (TN) was high. This indicates that AL soils have a good nutrient condition. The molar Ca/Al ratio, an indicator for toxicity of exchangeable aluminum (Alex), was more than 1, indicating no negative impact of Alex on plant growth. On the contrary, the median of pHH2O, CEC, and BS in SL soils was pH 4.02, 13.2cmol/kg, and 10%, respectively. The Ca/Al index was less than 0.6, which indicates that negative impacts of Alex on plants were high. Furthermore, both the concentration of BCex in SL soils and the BCex/TN ratio were the lowest among the three acidity degrees. This shows that SLsoils can be degraded by soil acidification compared with less acidic soils.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to study the effect of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating crystallinity on the proliferation and differentiation of human osteosarcoma cells. Materials and methods: Surface roughness of the titanium disks increased by anodizing treatment and then HA was coated using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). HA coating was crystallized by heat-treated at different temperature ($100^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$). According to the temperature, disks were divided into four groups (HA100, HA300, HA500, HA800). With the temperature, crystallinity of the HA coating was different. Anodized disks were used as control group. The physical properties of the disk surface were evaluated by surface roughness tests, XRD tests and SEM. The effect of the crystallinity of HA coating on HOS cells was studied in proliferation and differentiation. HOS cells were cultured on the disks and evaluated after 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Growth and differentiation kinetics were subsequently investigated by evaluating cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity. Results: Regardless of the heat-treated temperature, there is no difference on the surface roughness. Crystallinity of the HA was appeared in the groups of HA500, HA800. HOS cells proliferation, ALP activity were higher in HA500 and HA800 group than HA100 and HA300. Conclusion: Within the results of this limited study, heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ of HA coating produced by IBAD has shown greater effect on proliferation and differentiation of HOS cells. It is considered that further in vivo study will be necessary.

  • Sulfonated polypropylene (S-PP) is prepared by sulfuric acid-acetone aldol condensation reaction of polypropylene (PP) separator to yield hydrophilic separator surface with a moderate amount of $-SO_3H$ groups. Activated carbon supercapacitor is also fabricated adopting the S-PP separator coated with potassium polyacrylate (PAAK) hydrogel polymer electrolyte. As a result, the hydrophilic surface of S-PP separator involves better physical and electrochemical properties such as decrease in contact angle, improvements of wettability, electrolyte uptake, and ionic conductivity to give higher specific capacitance and long cycle-life.

  • The use of the dosimetry have been increasingly recognized as high radiation energy and radiation treatment planning(RTP) have rapidly developed in radiotherapy. There are many types of detectors for the dosimetry such as ionization chamber, film, TLD, diode, and etc. Among such detectors, the diode detector uses a photoconductor materials that generate electrical signals by the incident radiation energy. Though many research groups are recently interested in such materials, there is few experimental results except for silicon in the radiation therapy field. In this study, the feasibility of photoconductor materials was verified as a dosimeter through the evaluation of response properties at a high radiation energy. For the fabricated detectors based on $HgI_2$ and $PbI_2$, reproducibility, linearity, and pulse-rate response were analyzed. Such evaluations are essential factors for the use of dosimeter. From results, linearity and reproducibility of the fabricated $HgI_2$ detector indicated about 7% error. The fabricated $PbI_2$ detector showed 1.7% error in linearity, and 12.2% error in reproducibility.

  • Effects of sodium fluoride exposure on the amelogenesis during fetal formation were investigated using 11 days rat incisor of control group and two experimental groups. According to results of morphological analysis using an electron microscope, enamel organ in the rat incisor consisted of presecretory, secretory, and maturation zone, especially maturation zone had ruffle-ended ameloblasts (rAB) that additionally supply inorganic ions and smooth-ended ameloblasts (sAB) that remove water and organic compounds. Such a histological composition was same in fetal and adult rats. According to experimental results using calcein (green fluorescence) in order to reveal the modulation cycle of ameloblast, modulation cycle of experimental group decreased on an average one time than control group, as increase of density of sodium fluoride indicated that thickness of smooth-ended ameloblast decreased. Also ratio of thickness on sagittal total length of sAB increased than rAB in experimental groups than control group. In total length of teeth, an injected 100 ppm sodium fluoride group was similar control group but as injected 200 ppm group became short. In experimental group, thickness of sAB and rAB became narrow to the tip of cutting edge. According to concentration of sodium fluoride grows, the modulation cycle and total length of teeth were decreased, finally it prevented teeth growth.

  • Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Garolim coastal areas of Yellow Sea, Korea from 1998 to 2007. Water samples were collected at 3 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand(COD), dissolved oxygen(DO) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except pH and ammonia. The trend analysis by principal component analysis(PCA) during twenty years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Annual water qualities were clearly classified into 4 clusters by PCA; year cluster 1997, 1998 and 2000-2002, 1999 and 2003-2006/2008. By this multi-variate analysis the annual trends were summarized as follows; In recent years, salinity increased, whereas dissolved inorganic nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and COD decreased and water quality generally continued to be in good condition in Gsrolim coastal areas without inflow of freshwater from land. Garolim coastal areas are required to be conserved continuously as important coastal areas for fisheries.
