The State and Sources of Contamination with Heavy Metals and Anion in Stream Within Chonju City (전주시 하천의 중금속과 음이온에 대한 수질현황 및 오염원)

  • The Chonju and Samchun streams are passing though Chonju city and several contamination sources are located along these streams. The Samchun stream joins the Chonju stream in the Gosapyeong waste disposal site and the Chonju stream finally joins to the Mankyeong River. The objectives of this study are to determine the state and sources of contamination for heavy metals and anions in the Chonju and Samchun streams and to evaluate the effect of these streams on the contamination of the Mankyeong River. In order to select sampling locations, a stratified random sampling method was used. These streams was divided into several parts according to the expected contamination state, and samples were selected randomly from these parts. Generally, the water qualities of these streams were generally below the Drinking Water Level at the time of sampling in various heavy metals and anions. However, the levels of AI, Fe, $NH_{3}-N,Cl^{-}$, Cl- in these streams could be higher during dry season due to continuous inputs from various contamination sources. This study identified several contamination sources for these streams; two waste disposal sites along these streams for Fe, Mn, AI, Zn and $Cl^{-}$, the Chonju Waste Water Treatment Plant for Zn, Mn, $Cl^{-}$, $SO_{4}S$, $NO_{2}N$, and $NH_{3}-N$ and the untreated sewages for AI, Zn, Mn, $Cl^{-}$, $SO_{4}S$, $NH_{3}-N$ and $PO_{4}^{2-}$. This study also revealed that the Chonju stream itself is an important contamination source for Fe, Mn, $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_{4}S$ in the Mankyung River.

The Research Trend and Social Perceptions Related with the Tap Water in South Korea (수돗물 이용에 대한 국내 연구동향과 사회적 인식)

  • We analyzed research trend and public perception related with tap water to identify major factors affecting low consumption of tap water. 805 research articles were collected for text mining analysis and 1,000 on-line questionnaires were surveyed to find social variables influencing tap water intake. Based on the word network analysis, research topics were divided into 4 major categories, 1) drinking water quality, 2) water fluoridation, 3) residual chlorine, and 4) micro-organism management. Compared with these major research topics, scientific studies of drinking behavior, or social perception were rather limited. 22.4% of total respondents used tap water as drinking water source, and only 1% drank tap water without further treatments (i.e. boiling, filtering). Experience of quality control report (B=0.392, p=0.046) and level of policy trust (B=1.002, p<0.0001) were influential factors on tap water drinking behavior. Age (B=0.020, p=0.002) and gender (B= - 1.843, p<0.0001) also showed significant difference. To increase the frequency of drinking the tap water by social members, the more scientific information of tap water quality and the water policy management should be clearly shared with social members.

  • The objectives of the study were to evaluate the aquatic environment of an urban stream using various ecological parameters of biological biomarkers, physical habitat quality and chemical water quality and to develop a "Multimetric Eco-Model" ($M_m$-E Model) for the ecosystem evaluations. For the applications of the $M_m$-E model, three zones including the control zone ($C_Z$) of headwaters, transition zone ($T_Z$) of mid-stream and the impacted zone ($I_Z$) of downstream were designated and analyzed the seasonal variations of the model values. The biomarkers of DNA, based on the comet assay approach of single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE), were analyzed using the blood samples of Zacco platypus as a target species, and the parameters were used tail moment, tail DNA(%) and tail length (${\mu}m$) in the bioassay. The damages of DNA were evident in the impacted zone, but not in the control zone. The condition factor ($C_F$) as key indicators of the population evaluation indicator was analyzed along with the weight-length relation and individual abnormality. The four metrics of Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) were added for the evaluations of physical habitat. In addition, the parameters of chemical water quality were used as eutrophic indicators of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and conductivity. Overall, our results suggested that attributes of biomarkers and bioindicators in the impacted zone ($I_Z$) had sensitive response largely to the chemical stress (eutrophic indicators) and also partially to physical habitat quality, compared to the those in the control zone.

Effects Of Herbicide Machete On Carp, Cyprinus carpio Linne (제초제 마세트가 잉어에 미치는 영향에 대하여)

  • Toxicity of Machete on the mortality of the three different life stages, namely, hatching period, prelarval stage, and juvenile stage of carp(Cyprinus carpio Linne) was observed. The effect of the various exposure times on the mortality of the prelarval stage, and the effect of different temperatures on the toxicity during juvenile stage were also analysed. Hatchability and duration time of the carp were shown to be related to the concentration of Machete. In general, hatchability and duration time were shown to be decreased when the concentration of Machete was increased. For prelarval stage, 24hr and 48hr LC 50, and 24hr and 48hr EC 50 were observed to be 0.86mg/l and 0.43mg/l, and 0.35mg/l and 0.20mg/l, respectively. For juvenile stage, 24hr, 48hr, 96hr, and Incipient LC 50 were found to be 0.625mg/l, 0.365mg/l, 0.180mg/l, and 0.135mg/l, respectively. Apparently it was appeared that eggs were most resistant, and prelarvae were most sensitive to Machete among the three life stages. Although fish were removed from the Machete solution(3.2mg/l, and 1.8mg/l) prior to their death, continuous mortality was observed. Below 1.mg/l range, however, when concentration of Machete was lowered, the toxic effect of Machete on carp was reduced considerably even to the longtime exposure(24hours) Toxicity of Machete appeared to be related to water temperature, and it was observed that higher temperature reflected more toxicity.

  • A study on the contents of dissolved oxygen and phytoplankton in the pond water has been carried out to determine the water quality and to investigate the cause of red water in fish ponds at Pusan Fisheries College in 1972-1973. The results obtained are as follows : 1. Measured oxygen content during the period from 6th to 7th of August 1972 was: 23.95ppm ($328\%$ in saturation rate) in daytime and 0.39 ppm($5\%$) in the early morning in the water which contains heavy bloom of phytoplankton, on the other hand, in clear water the range of oxygen content was 8.72 to 6.58ppm. 2. The occurrences of red water in 1972-1973 were always caused by the sudden death of Synechocystis aquatilis (Cyanophyta) when the water temperature was very high ($30-33.5^{\circ}C$) and then high mortality of fish under rearing followed. 3. The phytoplankon observed during this study period was 133 species belonging to 55 genera in 23 families, and those of Chlorophyta was dominant in number of species, and Cyanophyta in quantity. 4. Zooplankton observed was 12 species belonging to 11 genera in 11 families, and they were very small both in number of species and in quantity compared to those of phytoplankton.

  • 해양 투기가 금지되면서 혐기소화를 통해 최종적으로 발생되는 폐기물 양을 줄이고 메탄 등의 바이오 가스를 얻어 이를 에너지로 얻기 위한 많은 공정들이 현장에 적용되고 있다. 하지만 혐기 소화 과정을 마친 후 유출되는 유출액은 고농도의 유기물질 및 암모니아성 질소, 인산염 등을 다량으로 함유하고 있어 적은 양이라도 하천이나 호수 등에 유입되면 수질 악화와 부영양화를 초래할 위험성이 크다. 이번 연구에서는 음식물류 폐기물로부터 바이오가스를 생산하기 위한 혐기소화 공정에서 발생하는 유출액의 방류수 수질기준 확보와 경제성을 만족시킬 수 있는 처리공정의 상용화 기술을 개발하기 위해 생물학적 처리, 물리 화학적 처리를 통합한 공정을 적용하였다. P건설사 혐기소화 유출액 pilot plant(1 ton/day) 운전 결과 50~70% 로 $NO_2$-N 이 약 1,000 mg/$\ell$정도로 축적되는 현상을 보였으며 상대적으로 $COD_{Cr}$의 농도는 400~600 mg/$\ell$로 C/N 비가 낮아 탈질이 어려울 것으로 판단하였다. 이에 실험실 규모에서의 실험을 진행하였다. $NO_2$-N와 $NO_3$-N을 기준으로 McCarty 양론비 기준 80% 에서 300%까지 메탄올을 주입해 제조 폐수와 실제폐수로 실험을 진행하였고 제조폐수로 실행된 실험에서 아질산 탈질의 효율을 확인하였다. 미생물이 메탄올에 순응 후 완전 탈질에 걸리는 시간은 약 2.5 일로 확인 되었으며 메탄올이 추가로 주입되지 않은 반응조의 $NO_2$-N의 탈질량은 메탄올이 이론값 100% 주입 된 반응조에 비해 30% 이하의 처리 효율을 나타냈다. 이론값을 기준으로 메탄올이 100% 주입된 반응조는 약 96.1%의 탈질 효율을 보였으며 메탄올 순응 후에 약 1.5 일의 HRT가 단축되었기 때문에 메탄올에 장시간 순응 시 탈질 효율이 더 좋아질 것으로 보인다. 아질산탈질에 대한 실험실 규모 연구결과를 토대로 pilot plant에서 재현성 검토를 목적으로 운전을 수행하였다. 무산소조의 HRT는 2.7 일 이었으며 호기조의 HRT는 4.1 일 이었다. 유입수의 평균 $COD_{Cr}$ 농도는 2,878 mg/L, T - N 농도는 2,723 mg/L로 나타났으며 $NO_2$-N 기준 C/N비 1.2-1.8의 메탄올을 주입하였을 때 96% 이상의 탈질율을 보였다.

Distribution characteristics of organophosphorous pesticides in Asan Bay, Korea (아산만 해역의 유기인계농약 분포특성)

  • Distribution characteristics of organophosphorous pesticides(OPs) in water and suspended particles were studied in Asan Bay, Korea, from June 2004 to October 2005. 28 organophosphorous pesticides could be detected in Asan Bay during this study. The most commonly and abundantly measured OPs in the surface waters were IBP (max=$6,343.7ng\;l^{-1}$). DDVP, diazionon, ethoprophos and methidathion were also observed at relatively high concentrations. Their maximum concentrations exceeded $100ng\;l^{-1}$ in almost every month. Malathion, mevinphos, ph orate and chlorfenvinphos were also detected at relatively high concentrations. Many OPs more frequently appeared in summer than in winter due to the intensive application of pesticides in summer months. The concentration of OPs generally decreased with increasing distance from the mouth of Asan Bay. This result implies progressive dilution of these pesticides in the marine environment. Measured concentrations of diazinon were well below $20,000ng\;l^{-1}$ which is a limit set by the seawater quality standard of Korea. The concentrations of malathion and parathion in the surface waters of Asan Bay did not exceed the seawater quality standard of Korea($250,000\;and\;60,000ng\;l^{-1}$ respectively). OPs adsorbed on suspended particles were also studied. DDVP, phorate, stirofos, EPN, azinphos-methyl and IBP had higher adsorption capacity onto suspended particles than other pesticides. Calculated pesticide-particle adsorption coefficient($K_d-particle$) for samples collected in Asan Bay were closely related to the reported pesticides-soil adsorption coefficient ($K_d-soil$).

Effect of Fertilizer Application Level considering Irrigation Water Quality on Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Productivity and Agricultural Environment (관개수질을 고려한 시비가 벼의 생산성과 농업환경에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect on agricultural environment and crop productivity by different amount of applied fertilizer in consideration of irrigation water quality. N, P and K contents of irrigation water used in this experiment were 6.16, 0.26 and 9.37 mg/L, respectively. N, P and K Concentrations of runoff water were lower than those of inflow water during rice cultivation. N, P and K Concentrations of ponded and percolated water were changed according to the amount and time of applied fertilization. During rice cultivation in paddy soil, nitrogen balance was closed to 0 in SFT 50% (50% level of soil testing fertilization), 0.14 kg/ha, but it was 95.3 kg/ha in CF (conventional fertilization) treatment In SW 50% and STF (soil testing fertilization) treatment yield of perfect rice was not greatly different as compared with CF treatment due to the superiority of ripening rate, 1,000 grains weight and milling characteristics. Mechanical paratability of rice was excellent in NF (non fertilization) treatment, STF 50% treatment showed higher in nutrient availability and fertilizers use efficiency than other treatments.

Temporal and Spatial Analysis of Flowrate and Water Quality of Major Tributaries for Implementation of TMDL in Sapgyo-reservoir Watershed at Chungcheongnam-do (충청남도 삽교호수계 수질오염총량관리제 시행을 위한 주요하천 유량 및 수질의 시.공간적 특성 분석)

  • The major tributaries in Sapgyo-reservoir watershed at Chungcheongnam-do were monitored for flowrate and water quality in order to analyze the characteristics of watershed and to prepare for implementation of total maximum daily load (TMDL). According to the analytical results of flowrate and water quality monitoring data of sixteen tributaries, the tributaries with the value of flowrate over $0.5m^3/s$ were 62.5% among the monitored tributaries and the value of flowrate in the Cheonancheon, Namwoncheon, Shinyangcheon except Gokgyocheon, Muhancheon, Sapgyocheon was relatively greater than the other tributaries. However, 37.5% of the tributaries were exceeded the water quality standards of Sapgyocheon sub-basin ($BOD_5$ 5 mg/L and/or below) and the concentration of water pollutants regardless of water quality parameters in Cheonancheon, Maegokcheon, Oncheoncheon including Gokgyocheon located in Gokgyocheon catchment were relatively higher than the other tributaries. The tributaries for improving the water quality, according to stream grouping method based on the results of flowrate and water quality monitoring data, were selected. In the Sapgyo-reservoir watershed, the tributaries for improving water quality, which has a large flowrate and a high concentration of water pollutants, were selected at Cheonancheon, Gokgyocheon, Maegokcheon, Namwoncheon, Oncheoncheon. The various water quality improving plans for those tributaries, in accordance with the reduction of point source pollution by population and livestock, should be established and implemented.

Analysis of the particulate matters in the vertical-flow woodchip wetland treating stormwater from paved road (포장도로 강우유출수 처리목적의 수직흐름형 우드칩 충진 습지에서 입자상 물질분석)

  • In this study, three pilot-scale wetland systems were built for treating stormwater runoff from asphalt road. Each of the system consists of a settling tank and a vertical flow wetland packed with 25%, 50%, and 75% woodchip as treatment media. According to the analysis of the distributions of particle size, it was found that solids ranging in size $0.52-30{\mu}m$ were predominant in the stormwater runoff. After 24-hours settling, those coarser than $20{\mu}m$ were significantly detained. Further retention, especially for the finer-sized fraction, occurred in the wetland through internal recirculation during the dry day periods. As a primary media of the wetland, woodchip showed a high filtration and attachment capacity for the particulates in pre-settled stormwater, whereas overall amount of solids in the wetland effluent increased due to the detachment of woody elements from the media. This was observed mainly during the initial 75 days of operation, and the size and detachment rate were found to be strongly related with the woodchip packing ratio. The mechanism involving woody particle detachment was modeled as a first-order form. In addition, water quality factors and operational parameters affecting the detachment were analyzed and discussed.
