  • In general, shear walls are employed as lateral resistance system. Most of shear wall structures require openings in shear walls and thus shear walls are linked by floor slabs or coupling beams resulting in the coupled shear wall structures. In this study, an LRB (lead rubber bearing) was introduced in the middle of the coupling beam of the coupled shear wall structures and the wind-induced response reduction effect of this system was investigated. In order to evaluate the control performance of the proposed method, 20- and 30-story building structures were used as example structures and boundary nonlinear time history analyses have been performed using artificial wind excitation. Japanese vibration evaluation criteria was employed to evaluate whether the proposed system could improve the serviceability of the tall coupled shear wall structures under wind excitation. Based on analytical results, it has been shown that the proposed method that connects shear walls with LRBs can improve the wind-induced response control effect.

  • This paper presents transmission parameters of DH(Dog-Horse) systems based on IEEE802.16e(WiBro) systems. DH requires higher uplink multimedia data rate, which is different from commercial WiBro systems. This paper designes some transmission parameters satisfying the DH system requirements and demonstrates link performance evaluation based on the parameters. For the transmission parameters, the number dwon/up link OFDM symbols are determined by 6/30, respectively. For reliable transmission of control signals, downlink modulation and coding rate are selected by QPSK, 1/2 coding rate and that of uplink is chosen by 16QAM 1/2 and 3/4 coding rate. Based on these parameters, computer simulations demonstrate the system performance of DH system.

  • High pressure nozzles and turbines of a gas turbine engine should be required to be operated under extreme operating conditions in order to maximize the performance. Engine manufactures have utilized nickel-base superalloys, enhanced cooling design, and thermal barrier coating techniques to overcome them and furthermore, material modeling, finite element analysis, optimization techniques, and etc. have been utilized widely for elaborate predictions. We aim to evaluate the effects on the low cycle fatigue life of the high pressure turbine blade caused by thermal barrier coatings and the cooling design of the endwall of the first stage turbine nozzle. To achieve it, the structural analysis, which utilized the results of conjugate heat transfer analysis as loading boundary conditions, was performed and then the results were the input for the assessment of low cycle fatigue life at several critical zones.

  • In this paper, we extracted the contour of lung parenchyma on EBT images with the improved active contour model. The objects boundary in conventional active contour model can be extracted by controlling internal energy and external energy as energy minimizing form. However, there are a number of problems such as initialization and the poor convergence about concave part. Expecially, contour can not enter the concave region by discouraging characteristic about stretching and bending in internal energy. We controlled internal energy by moving local perpendicular bisector point of each control point in the contour and implemented the object boundary by minimizing energy with external energy The convergence of concave part could be efficiently implemented toward lung parenchyma region by this internal energy and both lung images for initial contour could also be detected by multi-detection method. We were sure this method could be applied detection of lung parenchyma region in medical image.

  • Bronchogenic cyst is rare lesion that arises from maldevelopment of the primitive foregut, and is usually found in the lung and mediastinum. Cutaneous or subcutaneous bronchogenic cyst is rare and occur unusually in the shoulder region. We report here a case of 20-month-old boy with a bronchogenic cyst on his left shoulder region. He underwent incisional biopsy and curettage for a tender cystic mass at a department of dermatology, diagnosed as a epidermal inculsion cyst. But, additional cystic mass was palpated during wound care. MRI showed a well-defined subcutaneous cystic mass. The excised cyst was lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with occasional goblet cells and diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst.

  • In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of satellite imagery for the two heavy rainfall cases (21 September, 2010, 9 August, 2011) occurred in the Korean Peninsula. In general, the possibility of strong convection can be increased when the region with plenty of moisture at the lower layer overlapped with the boundary between dark and bright area in the water vapor imagery. And the merging of convective cells caused by the difference in the moving velocities of two cells resulted in the intensification of convective activity and rainfall intensity. The rainfall intensity is more closely linked with the minimum cloud top temperature than the mean cloud top temperature. Also the spatio-temporal variations of rainfall intensity are impacted by the existence of merging processes. The merging can be predicted by the animation of satellite imagery but earlier detection of convective cells is almost impossible by using the infrared and water vapor imagery.

  • Transport of pollutants in aquifer largely depends on groundwater flow which is governed by aquifer hydraulic parameters. Determination of these parameters and associated groundwater modeling become essential for adequate remediation of contaminate groundwater. The objective of this paper is to analyze groundwater flow and determine the optimum hydraulic parameters by performing groundwater modeling based on sensitivity analysis for unconfined sandy gavel aquifer constructed in a laboratory scale under various boundary condition. Results revealed that the simulated drawdown was lower than the observed drawdown irrespective of boundary conditions. and specific yield (S$_{y}$) had less effect on the grondwater flow than permeability (K) in the aquifer. Water balance analysis showed that the measured drawdown in neighboring observation wells during pumping was higher than either simulated or recovered water table. The indicated that a difference might exist in the water tables between aquifer and wells. The difference was investigated by time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements on water contents in the region of water table and capillary fringe, and explained by a delayed response of water table during gravitational drainage as the water table was lowered as a result of pumping.g.

  • For many coastal problems, such as wave transformation, tidal circulation, sediment transports and diffusion phenomena, we resort to numerical techniques. The representative numerical techniques are the method of finite differences and finite elements. The approximate algebraic equations, referred to as finite difference equations(FDEs), are subsequently solved at discrete grid points within the domain of interests. Therefore, a set of grid points within the domain, as well as the boundaries of the domain, must be specified. The generation of grids for FDEs, with uniform spacing, is very simple compared to that of finite elements. However, within a very complex domain, there are few grid generation tools we can use conveniently. Unfortunately, most of the commercial grid generation programs are developed only for finite element method. In this paper, grid generation method using digitizer, with uniform rectangular spacing, are introduced in detail. Didger and Surfer programs by Golden Software are necessary to produce comparatively accurate and simple depth data.

  • As in the other industrial processes, a nuclear power plant involves a steam relieving process through which condensable steam is discharged and condensed in a subcooled pool. An analysis of steam discharge transients was carried out using the method of characteristics to determine the flow characteristics and dynamic loads of piping that are used for structural design of the piping and its supports. The analysis included not only the steam flow rate but also the flow rates of the air and water which originally exist in the pipe. The analytical model was developed for a uniform pipe with friction through which the flow was discharged into a suppression pool. Including the combinations of system elements such as reservoir, valve and branching pipe lines. The piping flow characteristics and dynamic loads were calculated by varying system pressure, pipe length, and submergence depth. It was found that the dynamic load, water clearing time and water clearing velocity at the water/air interface were dependent not only on the system pressure and temperature but also on the pipe length and submergence depth.
