  • According to the development of modern medical science, one can find many other related researches in various fields. In order to get correct research results, research design, research process and analysis of results should be done in objective and reasonable manner. Therefore, various statistical analysis approaches are widely used. In this paper, we investigate the usage of statistical methods in research papers published in four medical journals between 2004 and 2007.

  • A review of literature discussing the status and impact of mainstream Korean research revealed that there have been few studies carried out to investigate the status of Korean mainstream medical research and that we need to know exact status of Korean medical papers published in mainstream journals. Accordingly, a study is undertaken to measure mainstream medical publication output by authors at Korean institutions and its growth during the 1980s as recorded in MEDLINE. EMBASE and SCI. For comparison purpose, a measurement of mainstream publication output of chemistry, a scientific field which showed the best mainstream performance, is also made. The database searching is limited to SCI for chemistry records.

  • This paper explains that socio-cultural contexts affect the transition in scholarly communication. Observing the process of introducing the open access model to the field of medicine in Korea, this paper found that the first, associations of medical societies considered a quality control system very important in the construction of an open access based fulltext DB, the second, there was an medical journal DB with a quality control procedure, and the third, many medical societies provided their journals fulltext to the public on their homepages. Consequently, this paper found that these factors had an effect on the process of transition in scholarly communication in the field of medicine in Korea.

  • It is practiced by many Korean medical institutions to give weights to medical papers published n foreign journals covered by major international abstracts and indexes (A&I) in the evaluation of research performance. In an attempt to recommend the databases to be used for the evaluation of KOrean medical research papers, this study measured the extent of overlap records of Korean medical papaers retrieved from the three major medical databases, EMBASE, MEDLINE and SCISEARCH. Korean papers published in foreign journals between 1990 to 1995 were analyzed. It also analyzed the characteristics of journals where these Korean medical papers are published with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. It is found that these is no difference among three databsases as far as the characteristics of journals where Korean medical papers are published are concerned with respect to their subjects, publishing countries and languages. Thus the number of papers retrieved from each database should be the major criterion to recommend the A&I databases to be used in the evalua ion of research performance. If one database must be chosen for the evaluation of Korean medical papers, it is probably the best to utilize SCISEARCH which is the most efficient database for verifying Korean medical papers in foreign journals. If two databases can be used, then EMBASE should be the next choice.

  • To understand the characteristics of open access journals in Korea, this research examined the 1,438 KCI journals in the fields of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, agriculture & oceanography, art & sports, and interdisciplinary. 21% of the KCI journals are freely available at the publisher's websites or open access DBs(OA). 34% are available only in the commercial fulltext DBs(TA) and 34% combined TA and OA. 48% of the OA journals can be found on the free fulltext DBs and 52% are accessed on the publisher's websites. OA journals in humanities and social science are available mainly on the publisher's websites. As compare with this, OA journals of STM fields are available via the free fulltext DBs. Medicine(30%) and social sciences(25%) have the highest overall share of OA. There are field differences in the rate of OA journals. In the fields of social sciences and humanities, 15% of the journal are open access. In case of medicine field, 60% are open access journals. OA journals in natural science and engineering are each 33% and 24%.

  • The study examined the current status and the use of electronic publishing files to produce a bibliographic database. In particular . it examined the problems faced in the production of KoreaMed, an abstract database of Korean medical journals. The methodology of KoreaMed to utilize the computer files which was produced in the process of publication of a print journal is found to be very effective. It assures the accuracy of data, accelerates the input speeds, and reduces the input costs. However, such a project can not be accomplished to a satisfactory level without the cooperation of the publishers involved. It turns out that many small publishers and academic societies hardly have saved the electronic publishing files of previous issues. Besides, it is hard to maintain the right channel to receive the files continuously. The input and processing of special characters are very delicate problems. In addition, the diversity of layout and formats of journals, of the electronic publishing software used, and of the storage media, makes the utilization of the electronic publishing files a very complex process. In order to operate the KoreaMed system more efficiently by requiring the publishers to submit XML files which meets the standard of the KoreaMed, it is necessary to educate and train personnels of journal publishers for the management of electronic publishing files.
