A Study of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Semantic Features of Korean Nouns: Focusing on the Categories of Grains, Fruits and Vegetables (한국어 명사의 내재적/외재적 의미특징 연구: 곡식, 과일, 채소 범주를 중심으로)

  • Using qualitative research methodology, this study has investigated the semantic features of 39 nouns, which are classified into the categories of grains, fruits and vegetables. A survey has been conducted with a substantial number of undergraduate students, who were asked to describe any semantic features they associated with the lexical items within the three categories. The analysis of the survey data shows that the concepts of examples of fruits are defined predominantly by intrinsic semantic features, while those of grains and vegetables are defined noticeably by extrinsic semantic features rather than intrinsic ones. Intrinsic semantic features are any properties inherent in an object itself and extrinsic semantic features are defined as any properties constructed by association with other objects or personal experiences in a certain situation. However, this study does not maintain that either intrinsic or extrinsic semantic features solely define the concepts of the examples of the three categories. Instead, it concludes that both kinds of semantic features are involved in the representation of the concepts of those vocabularies, with intrinsic features salient in the category of fruits and extrinsic features salient in the categories of gains and vegetables.

A Phenomenological Study on Subjective Meaning of a Participant in Assets-building Program for Low-income Families (저소득 가구의 현금자산형성의 주관적 의미에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • Using in depth interviews with phenomenological method, we explored subjective meaning of a participant assets-building program for low-income families. The research participants are 6 families who consisted of 30 low-income and low-wealth families in participating asset-building program. Findings indicate that we can find out a criteria of classify among low-income families. That are single mom family, single father family and grandparent family, and normal family. It could be useful to evaluate the policy of assets-building.

  • Sense-Making Theory gives persuasive power to information seeking behavior while acknowledging the diversity of subjects. It is being used as a theory and methodology to explain the phenomenon of information seeking in various temporal and spatial contexts related to the communication of individuals' inner realms, face-to-face, organization, and mass communication. However, it is not to be a theory to explain the information seeking behavior of a group in that it explains the individual epistemological interpretation of the subjects. Also, the purpose of the theory was to establish a receiver-centered communication theory that constructs sense-making by itself, away from the receiver who unilaterally accepts the sender's information from the perspective of communication theory. However, Dervin accepted the existence of object information without explaining the relationship between the recipient's external information and the receiver. Owing to the establishing his concept of information following the Popper(1972)'s world concept, its object of observation is not World III(objective content of thought), but the process of sense making in which World II(psychological world) receives information generated in World III. In this context, Dervin's theory is not to explain the communication behavior at a group level.

An Exploratory Analysis of Discourse Types and Meaning-making Strategies Used by a Beginning Teacher in Secondary Science Class (담화양상과 의미형성전략에 관한 초임 교사의 중등 과학수업 사례 탐색)

  • This study analyzed discourse types and meaning making strategies used in a secondary beginning science teacher's class. A voluntary middle school science teacher participated in this study, and her instruction was observed and videotaped. The analysis consisted of two parts. First, we categorized the types of discourses occurred in class. Second, we examined her instructional strategies used through meaning making practices at the micro-level. Results indicated that there were five episodes emerged representing different discourse types and meaning making strategies in the beginning teacher's lesson about 'the pathway and property of light'. Conclusion and implications for further study and teacher professional development were presented in the paper.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' conceptions and conceptual types on molecular kinetic theory of gases. Data was collected by a series of semi-structured and in-depth interviews, and has been analyzed. This study showed that the students came to science classes with various prior conceptions of many disciplinary topics. Their conceptual types of their prior knowledge were distinguished as superficial terms-speaking, partial sense-making, and causal sense-making by the degrees of organization and elaboration of conceptual networks. These conceptual types had influence on the ways students understand and think of science, a stability of their conceptions, a tendency to distinguish school science from everyday science, and building a meaning of concept in contexts. It was referred that the students didn't have proper understanding on the nature of scientific knowledge and had been limited their participations as active learners. Therefore, in order for students to experience conceptual change, they must have opportunities of manifesting their own thinking, taking part in discussions, and promoting their motivations and metacognition of knowing and learning science.

Sputtering effect on chemical state changes in amorphous Ga-In-Zn-O thin film

  • Ga-In-Zn-O 물질은 비정질상태에서 높은 전하 운동성을 가지고 있으며 차세대 투명전극 thin film transistor 대안 소재로 각광받고 있다. 그런데 이 물질은 ion sputtering에 따라 전기적인 특성에 큰 변화가 관찰되고 있으며, 이는 표면에서의 화학적 상태가 전기적 특성을 좌우할 것이라는 것을 의미한다. 또한 보다 안정적이고 신뢰적인 소자를 구현하기 위해서는 ion sputtering에 의한 표면에서의 화학적 특성 변화를 이해하는 것이 매우 중요하다는 것을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 $Ga_2O_3:In_2O_3$:ZnO의 비율이 각각 1:1:1, 2:2:1, 3:2:1 그리고 4:2:1인 시료를 $Ne^+$이온을 이용하여 sputtering하면서 표면에 민감한 분광분석 기법인 x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy와 x-ray absorption spectroscopy를 이용하여 분광정보의 변화들을 연구하였다. 실험에 의하면, Ga 3d의 양에 비해서 In 4d, Zn 3d의 양은 sputtering 시간에 따라서 각 각 양이 줄어들었으며, 전체적으로 보다 산화가가 높은 경향을 보였으며, valence band maximum 근처에 subgap state를 형성하는 것을 관찰하였다. 또한 sputtering을 계속하는 경우 In 3d, In 4d, 및 Fermi energy 근처에 metallic state가 형성되는 것을 관찰하였다. 이러한 subgap state와 metallic state의 관측은 각기 sputtering에 따라서, 아직 명확하지는 않지만, surface state의 형성 및/혹은 oxygen interstitial의 형성 그리고 metallic In의 형성 및/혹은 oxygen defect의 형성이 이루어지는 것을 의미한다.

  • 군집 분석은 데이터의 속성을 분석하여 서로 유사한 패턴을 가진 데이터를 묶는 방법이다. 군집 분석은 많은 응용 분야에서 쓰이고 있으나, 수행된 군집 분석 결과가 과연 정확한 결과이고 의미 있는 결과인지를 평가하는데 어려움이 있다. 본 논문에서는 군집이 형성된 데이터를 분석하여 군집 분석 결과를 평가하는 상대적 군집 평가 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서는 상대적 군집 평가 방법의 인덱스를 정의하고 형성된 군집 분석 결과에 적용해 최적의 군집, 의미 있는 군집을 찾을 수 있음을 보인다. 또한 실험을 통해 제안한 인덱스의 적합성을 보이며, 제안한 인덱스가 기존의 인덱스에 비해 최적의 군집, 의미 있는 군집을더 잘 찾을 수 있음을 보인다.

A Study on the Factors Influencing Semantic Relation in Building a Structured Glossary (구조적 학술용어사전 데이터베이스 구축에 있어서 용어의 의미관계 형성에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find factors to affect on the formation of semantic relation from terminology and what is to be affected by these factors to build the database scheme of terminology dictionary by a structural definition. In this research, 826,905 keywords of 88,874 social science articles and 985,580 keywords of 125,046 humanities science articles in the KCI journals from 2007 to 2011 were collected. From collected data, subject complexity, structural hole, term frequency, occurrence pattern and an effect between the number of nodes and the number of patterns which were derived from the semantic relation of linked terms of established 'STNet' System were analyzed. The summarized results from analyzed data and network patterns are as follows. Betweenness Centrality, term frequency, and effective size affect the numbers of semantic relation node. Among these factors, betweenness centrality was the most effective and effective size. But term frequency was the least effective. Betweenness Centrality, term frequency, and effective size affect the numbers of semantic relation type. Term frequency is the most effective. Therefore, when building a terminology dictionary, factors of betweenness centrality, term frequency, effective size, and complexity of subject are needed to select term. As a result, these factors can be expected to improve the quality of terminology dictionary.

  • 복합어는 여러개의 단어가 하나의 의미론 나타내는 단어를 말한다. 이 논문에서는 번역시 구성단어들의 의미의 합이 아닌 다른 또 하나의 의미를 나타내는 단어를 대상으로 한다. 이러한 복합어는 구문해석 단계에서 많은 애매성의 원인이 되며, 유형에 따라 숙어 처럼 새로운 의미로 항상 같이 쓰이는 복합어와 복합어의 형성이 복잡하여 규칙으로서 단어를 이해할 필요가 있는 단어로 구분할 수 있다. 첫번째 유형은 단어의 형성이 단순하여 하나의 사전 엔트리로 등록될 수 있다. 이때 이들 복합어가 가지는 개별 어휘 규칙을 같이 사전에 등록하여 사전을 효과적 이용할 수 있다. 두번째 유형은 규칙에 의한 처리를 하여야 한다. 이러한 복합어에 대한 인식을 구문분석이전에 행함으로서 적은 노력으로 복합어로 인한 전체 문장의 애매성을 감소시키고, 문장내 단어의 수를 감소시킴으로서 전채 번역시스템의 효율을 증대하며, 복합어의 처리는 번역문을 자연스럽게 생성하는 데 큰 효과를 나타낸다.

  • This study examines the influence of the bodily interaction with digital technology on meaning-making process in a mathematical activity. Increasing interest in the use of multi-touch dynamic digital technology has brought the movement of the body to the center of research focus in recent mathematics education literature. Thereby, we investigate the process in which the meaning of the density of rational numbers emerges around the bodily interaction on the multi-touch dynamic digital technology. We analyze a case of a small group of primary school students with microethnography. In the result, the students formed the higher level of meaning of the density, where the finger movement of zooming in-and-out played a crucial role throughout the meaning-maknig process.
