Sedimentation characteristics SS, $BOD_5$ and removal efficiency of waste water in the tissue paper mill using milk carton were examined. Optimum dosage of coagulant, rapid mixing time and slow mixing time were determined by turbidity, SS and S-$BOD_5$ and then equation for treatment efficiency was suggested. For the coagulant, polyaluminium chloride(PAC) are compared with a little better efficiency compare to the aluminium sulfate.

The coagulation efficacy of Al-based coagulants (such as Alum, PACS, and PACC) was investigated to ascertain removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate with variation of solution pH, coagulant dosages, and pre-dilution ratios. The efficacy of Al-based coagulants was maximized in the pH range of 6~9. Under the initial condition of pH 8, $10mg/L\;{PO_4}^{3-}$, and 20 NTU, Al-based coagulants exhibited a similar efficacy in the removal of turbidity, whereas the removal efficiency of phosphate was clearly dependent on the basicity of coagulants: Alum (0%) > PACS (45~50%) > PACC (70%). At high initial turbidity of 100 NTU, polymeric coagulants, such as PACS and PACC, exhibited a higher removal efficiency of turbidity compared to Alum. In comparison to direct injection of coagulants at low initial turbidity (20 NTU), 500~2000 times pre-diluted Alum, exhibited reduced coagulation efficacy; however, removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate increased with the increase of retention time. Pres-diluted PACC exhibited the enhanced coagulation efficacy followed by silght decrease of the removal efficiencies with increase of the retention time. At high initial turbidity of 100 NTU, pre-diluted Alum and PACC exhibited higher removal efficiencies of turbidity and phosphate.
In this study, efficiency of pre-treatment of turbid seawater was measured where micro-air bubbles were used to remove particles in seawater after input of natural coagulant PGA. Artificial seawater was prepared having the intended trubidity using marine sediments and microalgae. 73.7% of turbidity removal was achieved when 0.5g/L of $AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ was added in the artificial seawater, but 92.4% of turbidity removal was observed when 0.05g/L of PGA was added in the artificial seawater containing microalgae. In addition, much greater turbidity removal was achieved for microalage than sediments. For both cases, input of 0.1g/L PGA and following additional input of micro-air bubbles for 5 seconds resulted in the maximum removal efficiency where reaction time of coagulation was 1 min and flotation by micro-air bubbles was 10 min. From this study, we concluded that micro-air floation after coagulation could be a possible economical pre-treatment method for highly turbid seawater.
This study was carried to survey the removal characteristics of BPA using coagulation process by PAC and PAHCS. BPA removal for PAC and PAHCS was 20.4 with 8.7 Al mg/L and 6.8 Al mg/L, respectively. Removal of BPA was lower than $UV_{254}$ and DOC but removal characteristics were similar. BPA removal for PAC and PAHCS was most high in pH 6.5 and 7.0 respectively. The time for removal by mixing time was 40 min in PAC and 30 min in PAHCS. When powdered activated carbon 50 mg/L was added in coagulation process, a high remove of BPA (61%) was noticed. Specially BPA was highly increase powdered activated carbon 5 mg/L alone. These results will be appliable in the conventional water treatment plants for improvement of water treatment system.

The objectives of this research are to (1) observe changes in particle size distribution due to formation of microflocs during coagulation process (2) identify the membrane fouling potential on cross flow system (3) investigate the mechanism of membrane fouling. The rate of flux decline for the hydrophobic membrane was significantly greater than for the hydrophilic membrane, regardless of pretreatment conditions. The pretreatment of the raw water significantly reduced the fouling of the UF membrane. Also, the rate of flux decline for the hydrophobic membrane was considerably greater than for the hydrophilic membrane. Applying coagulation process before membrane filtration showed not only reducing membrane fouling, but also improving the removal of dissolved organic materials that might otherwise not be removed by the membrane. That is, during the mixing period, substantial changes in particle size distribution occurred under rapid and slow mixing condition due to the simultaneous formation of microflocs and NOM precipitates. Therefore, combined pretreatment using coagulation not only improved dissolved organics removal efficiency but also flux recovery efficiency.

This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the stream current detector (SCD) and charge analyzing system (CAS), which are well known as the automatic coagulant dosage determination instruments. When the SCD system was used, the current charge value set at pH 9.3 could not be used as the coagulant dosage when the pH of the raw water decreased to 5.7, and the current charge value corresponding to pH 5.7 was required to be reset. In case of CAS system, polydadmac is stable as a cationic titrant when the pH of the raw water ranged 9.3 to 6.0. And it was effective to use polydadmac as a cationic titrant for high turbidity water. The current charge of polydadmac was almost constant between pH 5 and 11, however, the difference in charge of alum is six times in this pH range. Therefore, when the pH of the raw water was changed, it seems that the coagulant used in the actual water treatment plant was as a good cationic titrant.

This study evaluated the flocs forming characteristics in the mixing zone to increase the coagulation effect in the drinking water plant. As a measuring tool of formed flocs, on-line particle dispersion analyzer (iPDA) was used in Y drinking water plant. To evaluate the forming flocs, many parameters such as poly amine, coagulant dosing amount, raw water turbidity, and pH was applied in this study. During the periods of field test, poly aluminium chloride (PACl) as a coagulant was used. With the increase of the raw water turbidities, poly amine was also added as one of aids for increasing in coagulation efficiency. The turbidity and pH of raw water was ranged from 7 to 9 and from 25 to 140 NTU, respectively. The increasing of raw water turbidity brought the bigger floc sizes accordingly. From a regression analysis, $R^2$ value was 0.8040 as a function of T, raw water turbidity. Floc size index (FSI) was obtained from a correlation equation as follows; FSI = 0.9388logT - 0.3214 Also, polyamine gave the bigger flocs the moment it is added to the coagulated water in the rapid mixing zone. One of parameters influencing the floc sizes was the addition of powdered active carbon(PAC) in the mixing zone. In case of higher turbidity of raw water, $R^2$ value was 0.9050 in the parameters of [PACl] and [PAC]; FSI = $0.0407[T]^{0.324}[PACI]^{0.769}[PAC]^{0.178}$ On-line floc monitor was beneficial to evaluate the flocs sizes depending on the many parameters consisting raw water properties, bring the profitable basic data to control the mixing zone more effectively.

In this study the effects of pre-chlorination on the coagulation of water which contain Microcystis aeruginosa. were investigated on the laboratory scale. We prepared the sample of $10^5cell/mL$ Microcystis aeruginosa and then applied 0.2, 1.0, 10 mg-Cl/L chlorine on the sample After reaction period(1 minute and 1 hour), each sample was coagulated. As a result, after 0.4 mg-Al/L coagulant dose, turbidities of all samples were below 2 mg-Kaolin/L. Turbidity was not affected by chlorine dose. As the dose of chlorine was increased, the residual aluminum was decreased, but result of $UV_{254}$ was adverse.
