  • We investigated the change of mechanical properties of UP using mixture of SM with VAc or MA that have low glass transition temperature when polymerized instead of SM only for diluents of UP. In case of using mixture of SM/MA, it was elucidated that the toughness of UP was more improved than using SM only. But in case of SM/VAc, it was observed that the content of mixture could not affect on toughness. It was concluded that these results are caused by the effect of each diluents mixtures on stress-relaxation due to phase separation and on decrease glass transition temperature of UP is quite different from each other.

  • We have adopted the strain compensated PBH(planar buried heterostructure) - LD in which the MQW active layer consisted of 1.4% compressively strained GainAsP (E$_{g}$ = 0.905eV) wells and 0.7% tensile strained GaInAsP(E$_{g}$ = 1.107eV) barriers grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). We hav einvestigated effects of number of wells and the structure of the separate confinement heterostructure (SCH) layer in the strain-compensated MQW-PBH-LD. The threshold current, the external quantum efficiency, the transparency current density J$_{o}$, and the gain constant .beta. have been evaluated for uncoated MQW-PBH-LD. As the number of wells increases, the internal quantum efficiency and the transparency current density decreases, whereas the gain contant increases. The small width of the SCH layer shows the large internal quantum efficiency. The small internal loss and the large gain constant have been obtained by inserting the large bandgap SCH layer.

  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is an emerging technology enabling cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication. To successfully imprint a nano-sized pattern, the process conditions such as temperature, pressure, and time should be appropriately selected. This starts with a clear understanding of polymer material behavior during the NIL process. In this work, the squeezing of thin polymer films into nanocavities during the thermal NIL has been investigated based upon a two-dimensional viscoelastic finite element analysis in order to understand how the process conditions affect a pattern quality. The simulations have been performed within the viscoelastic plateau region and the stress relaxation effect has been taken into account.

  • Until recently, almost all ETFE film structures that have been erected is the cushion type because there are problems at lower allowable strength under elastic range and viscosity behaviour such as creep and relaxation of ETFE films under long-term stresses. But the number of tension type structures is currently increasing. This paper proposes the stretch fabrication of ETFE film to verify the applicability of ETFE films to tensile membrane structures. First of all, to investigate the possibility of application on tensile membrane structures, the stretch fabrication test is carried out, and it is verified that it is possible to increase the yield strength of the film membrane structures. After simulating the experiment also carries out an analytical investigation, and the effectiveness of the elasto-plastic analysis considering the viscous behavior of the film is investigated. Finally, post-aging tension measurement is conducted at the experimental facilities, and the viscosity behavior resulting from relaxation is investigated with respect to tensile membrane structures.

  • The connection part (corbel) between bottom slab and side wall in inground LNG storage tank has hinge conditions partly fixed by using anchor bars to reduce stress concentration. The corbel deforms in both radial and vertical directions under load conditions of the LNG tank such as LNG temperature, hydraulic pressure, etc. Membrane is an important part from the viewpoint of design because the deformation of the corbel is transformed directly to the membrane and superposed with other deformations. Behavior of the corbel has been investigated through various sensors to measure temperature, load and displacement. And the test data have been compared with finite element results analysis to propose a more reasonable design of LNG storage tank.

  • Recent attempt to enhance the safety against collision reshaped the simple shell structures into the integrated complex shell structures. Moreover, due to various regulations continuously tightened for environment protection, weight reduction of automobiles becomes an increasingly important issue. Auto parts lightening is mainly accomplished by more reasonable design, adoption of lighter materials and miniaturization of the auto bodies. Focusing on the locally enhanced design approach among the above three ways, we here attempt to develop a patching optimization method, and also to determine the thicknesses of an integrated shell structure, both bringing a specified amount of stress relaxation. We first select a cross member as a patching optimization model. Based on the finite element stress calculations, we relieve the stress of cross member by patching in two ways-nonuniform thickness patching and optimized uniform thickness patching, the latter of which is more effective in a practical point of view for the preset amount of stress relaxation. Selecting a box type subframe as another finite element analysis model, we then determine the thickness of each part by axiomatic design approach for a preset amount of stress relaxation. The patching methodology and the axiomatic approach adopted in this work can be applied to the other complex shell structures such as center member and lower control arm.

  • The modulation performance of 10 Gbps electro-absorption InGaAsP/InGaAsP strain compensated MQW (Multiple Quantum Well) modulator module depends on the modulator as well as the package parasitics. The high frequency package parasitics resulting from various structural discontinuities, limit the modulation bandwidth and increase the chirp-parameter. Therefore, we propose the double bondwires embedded in dielectric materials to minimize the bondwire parasitics. Using the proposed structure with 50 $\Omega$ terminating resistor, the modulation bandwidth is greatly increased by 125 % than the bare chip and the chirp-parameter is also reduced. This technique can be used in optimizing the package of high speed external modulators.

  • Piping systems of the power generating stations have been generally protected by hydraulic and mechanical snubbers which can allow large displacements arising from temperature change while those can reduce or absorb stresses due to vibrations. However these snubbers require amounts of budget for maintenance or replacement because of the leakage, lubrication and finally short life cycle. Recently the snubbers consisted of wire rope have been proved to reduce vibrations of piping systems. While the wire rope snubbers are free of maintenance such as leakage and lubrication, imported price are so high. Now it is necessary to design, manufacture and certificate these wire rope snubbers.

  • Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. And it is well known that volume expansion due to phase transformation could influence in the case of welding of high tensile strength steels on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. In this study, we investigated the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress through experiment. And three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis is conducted to compare the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress in high strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80) with analytical results which is not considering the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation. According to the results, the extents of welding residual stress relaxation due to phase transformation in the case of welding of POSTEN60, POSTEN80 are 0.85 $\sigma$/$\sigma$$\sub$Y0/, 0.75$\sigma$/$\sigma$$\sub$Y0/, respectively.

  • Residual stresses can be produced during manufacturing processes, eg. welding, machining and plastic working, and also in service. It can be superimposed with externally applied loads, so that unexpected deformations and failures of members will be occurred. Especially, the strength and the life of welded components are affected extensively by the residual stresses distributed around their weldments not only under static loads, but also fatigue loads. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during service. Under static loads the relaxation takes place when the residual stress superimposed with external stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. It is shown that under fatigue loads the residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or few cycle loading, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. Although many investigations in this field have been carried out, the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation by mechanical means are still not clear, and there are few comprehensive models for predicting specific effects on the stress relaxation. In this study, the effects of applied static and fatigue loads on the residual stress relaxation were Investigated, and a model to predict quantitatively the residual stress relaxation was proposed.
