  • In this study, ultimate lateral load capacity of piles is analyzed with consideration of lateral stress effect. Based on results obtained in this study, a method for the estimation of ultimate lateral load capacity is proposed. This makes it possible to more realistically estimate the ultimate lateral load capacity under various stress states caused by in-situ soil condition and pile installation process. Calibration chamber test results with various soil conditions were used in the analysis. From the test results, it was found that effect of the lateral stress was greater than that of the vertical stress on the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles. It was also found that, as the relative density increases, displacements required to reach the ultimate state increases, showing relative displacements of around 14% and 18-25% for $D_R$ : 55% and 86%, respectively. Based on results obtained in this study, a methodology for the estimation of ultimate lateral load capacity of piles using correction factors was proposed. Results from proposed method matched well measured results.

  • The technique of fretting fatigue test was developed and fretting fatigue tests of A12024-T4 were conducted under several conditions. The newly developed calibration methods for measuring surface contact tractions showed good linearity and repeatability. The plate type specimen to which tow bridge type pads were attached and vision system was used to observe the crack behaviour. The oblieque cracks appeared in the early stage of crack growth and they became mode I cracks as they grow about 1 mm. The mode I transition points were found to be longer when surface tractions are higher or bulk stress is lower. Before the crack becomes mode I crack, 'well point' where crack grow about rate is minimum, was detected under every experimental condition. The crack behaviour was found to be affected by surface tractions, contact area, bulk stress. It was also found that partial slip and stick condition is most detrimental and the crack starts from the boundary of stick and slip. For gross slip crack started at the outside edge of pad. After crack mode transition, fretting fatigue cracks showed almost same behaviour of plain mode I fatigue cracks. Equivalent stress intensity factor was used to analyze the behaviour of fretting fatigue cracks and it was found that stress intensity factors can be applied to fretting fatigue cracks.

  • Two test methods, nonrepetitive plate loading test (NPLT) and repetitive plate loading test (RPLT) are being used to control the quality of compaction through the evaluation of the stiffness of subgrade soils in the Korea railway industry. Subgrade reaction modulus ($k_{30}$) from the NPLT and strain modulus ($E_v$) from the RPLT are the index values to check them. The methods have similar aspects, but they differ in the modulus evaluation method, the numbers of loading stage, termination procedures, etc. This paper analyses the differences of the two test methods and evaluates the relationship between subgrade reaction modulus and strain modulus. In order to develop the relationship, total 22 tests were performed including the NPLT and the RPLT at the 6 original grounds, and 5 upper or lower subgrades in Kyungbu High Speed Railway II stage construction sites. According to the soil conditions, the relationship between subgrade reaction modulus and strain modulus was proposed with corrections by considering strain states, mean confining pressures, and Poisson's ratio.

  • This paper deals with the time-dependent analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams. Based on the age-adjusted effective modulus method, the structural behavior in accordance with time is analyzed using the force equilibrium and strain compatibility condition within a typical section. Unlike most of presented approaches adopting some assumptions, such as non-cracking of concrete and consideration of steel effect as a transformed concrete area only, more accurate results can be obtained at all loading conditions since all materials are considered together so as to be maintained their given properties and the cracking effect is included at the same time. Several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to identify the significance of various effects on the time-dependent response of concrete members, i.e., stress re-distribution of each material and occurrance of long-term deflection, etc. Moreover, the obtained results can be used at design and/or construction stage for the purpose of more accurate prediction of structural response with time.

  • This paper is concerned with an analysis of a surface edge crack emanated from a sharp contact edge. For a geometrical model, a square wedge is in contact with a half plane whose materials are identical, and a surface perpendicular crack initiated from the contact edge exists in the half plane. To analyze this crack problem, it is necessary to evaluate the stress field on the crack line which are induced by the contact tractions and pseudo-dislocations that simulate the crack, using the Bueckner principle. In this Part I, the stress filed in the half plane due to the contact is re-summarized using an asymptotic analysis method, which has been published before by the author. Further focus is given to the stress field in the half plane due to a pseudo-edge dislocation, which will provide a stress solution due to a crack (i.e. a continuous distribution of edge dislocations) later, using the Burgers vector. Essential result of the present work is the corrective functions which modify the stress field of an infinite domain to apply for the present one which has free surfaces, and thus the infiniteness is no longer preserved. Numerical methods and coordinate normalization are used, which was developed for an edge crack problem, using the Gauss-Jacobi integration formula. The convergence of the corrective functions are investigated here. Features of the corrective functions and their application to a crack problem will be given in Part II.

  • The load carrying capacity of bridge structures in public use is generally evaluated without considering their actual behavioral characteristics. This study examined common errors taking place in the evaluation of load carrying capacity of bridge structures. In order to account for their current behavioral characteristics such as the boundary condition, we evaluated the load carrying capacity of a bridge in terms of axial force, which was calculated by applying deflection to the buckling equation for members with initial imperfections, and in terms of bending moment obtained from deflection.

  • Internal or external restraint of concrete strain due to drying shrinkage and creep in concrete structures causes mechanical strain and becomes a source of persistent change in creep-causing stress conditions. Mathematical modeling to incorporate the persistent change of creep-inducing stress is generally achieved with consideration of the ages of concrete and concrete properties at the times of loadings, and stress history. This paper presents an incremental format of creep model based on parallel creep concept to depict the creep under time-varying stress history in developing creep strain. Laboratory experiments are carried out to validate the performance of the presented creep model. Typical creep phenomena are addressed through the comparisons between the measured and predicted creep strains.

  • Coastal sand dunes are formed by the transport and deposition of sands by wind, and play a role in conserving ecosystems and safeguarding against natural disasters. While dunes possess a self-recovering ability from erosion, the ongoing reduction in coastal zones necessitates the countermeasures of coastal sand erosion. The potential of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology, which enhances the ground's strength and stiffness, in increasing the erosion resistance of coastal sand dunes is explored in this study. A wind tunnel testing system was used to simulate the erosion behavior of coastal dune. Untreated and MICP-treated sands were prepared for the erosion tests. Using a 3D scanner, pre- and post-wind eroded sand surfaces were surveyed. The erosion behaviors and corresponding erodibility parameters were analyzed based on the wind tunnel testing results. The level of cementation was quantified by acid-washing the treated sands. Experimental results indicated an increase in CaCO3, strength, and erosion resistance with higher MICP treatments. This study proposed a correction coefficient to correlate the shear stress by wind with the one by water. This study confirms the potential of applying MICP technology to mitigate wind-induced erosion in coastal sand dunes.

  • A pressuremeter is an expandable tube which is placed in the soil, and then expanded under controlled condition against the soil. From this test a pressure expansion curve of the soil can be obtained. However soil disturbance during the test has significant influence on the results of tests. A general governing equation for pressuremeter test can be theoretically derived on the basis of the hyperbolic soil model and the cavity expansion theory. The curve fitting technique was used to establish the pressure-strain curve without disturbance of soil during testing. This interpretation makes use of both the loading and unloading portions of the test. An interpretation methodology is described and illustrated with pressuremeter test data carried out in the weathered granitic soil to estimate initial shear modulus. Standard penetration test is a very common site investigation technique in Korea. Therefore the blow counts of standard penetration test are discussed by comparing them with initial shear modulus.
