In this paper, a new adaptive analysis scheme for element-free Galerkin method(EFGM) is proposed. The novel point of this scheme is that the triangular cell structure based on the Delaunay triangulation is used in the numerical integration and the node adding/removing process. In adaptive analysis with this scheme, there is no need to divide the integration cell and the memory cell structure. For the adaptive analysis of crack propagation, the reconstruction of cell structure by adding and removing the nodes on integration cells based the estimated error should be carried out at every iteration step by the Delaunay triangulation technique. This feature provides more convenient user interface that is closer to the real mesh-free nature of EFGM. The analysis error is obtained basically by calculating the difference between the values of the projected stresses and the original EFG stresses. To evaluate the performance of proposed adaptive procedure, the crack propagation behavior is investigated for several examples.

This study presents methods to estimate elastic-plastic crack opening displacement (COD) fur circumferential through-wall cracked pipes for the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) analysis of pressurized piping. Proposed methods are based not only on the GE/EPRI approach but also on the reference stress approach. For each approach, two different estimation schemes are given, one for the case when full stress-strain data are available and the other fur the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. For the GE/EPRI approach a robust way of determining the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) parameters is proposed, not only fur the case when detailed information on full stress-strain data is available but also for the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. The COD estimates according to the GE/EPRI approach, using the R-O parameters determined from the proposed R-O fitting procedures, generally compare well with the published pipe test data. For the reference stress approach, the COD estimates according to the method based on both full stress-strain data and limited tensile properties are in good agreement with pipe test data. In conclusion, experimental validation given in the present study provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to practical LBB analyses even though when information on material's tensile properties is limited.

This study is intended to propose an approach to reliability-based safety evaluation as well as LRFR(Load and Resisitance Factor Rating) type capacity classification of military or civilian bridges based on the limit state models which are delived by incorporating all the uncertainties of resistance and load random variables including deterioration, and are used in a practical AFOSM (Advanced First Order Second Moment) method. The proposed methods for the assement of safety and load carrying capacity are applied for the evaluation of rating and classifications of several practical bridges against the crossing of military vehicles. Based on the observation of the numerical results, it can be concluded that the current NATO classification method which is based on the traditionl allowable stress concept can not provide real load carrying capacity but results in nominal classification, and therefore the reliability-based safety evaluation and LRFR-classification method or the corresponding rational allowable stress method proposed in this paper may have to be introduced into the classification practice.

In this paper, limit load analyses and fracture mechanics analyses were conducted via finite element analyses for the welded pipe with circumferential crack at the center of the weldment. Systematic changes for strength mismatch ratio, width of weldment, crack shape and thickness ratio of the pipe were considered to provide strength mismatch limit load. And J-integral calculations based on reference stress method were conducted for two materials, stainless steel and ferritic steel. Reference stress defined by provided strength mis-match limit load gives much more accurate J-integral.

Efforts are presently underway for developing an optimal design methodology for GEN-IV nuclear reactors based on target failure probabilities. A typical example is the system-based code, in which the results are represented in the form of partial safety factors (PSFs). Thus, a PSF is one of the crucial elements in either component design or integrity assessment based on target failure probabilities during the operation period. In the present study, a procedure for calculating the PSF of a circumferential through-wall cracked pipe based on the elastic-plastic crack initiation criterion is established, in which the importance of each input variable is assessed. Elastic-plastic J-integrals are calculated using the GE/EPRI and reference stress methods, and the PSF values are calculated using both first- and second-order reliability methods. Moreover, the effect of statistical distributions of assessment variables on the PSF is also evaluated.
Deflections due to shrinkage are frequently ignored in design calculation. Especially for thin member, shrinkage often causes considerable deformations as wellas appreciable stress changes. Several methods for computing shringkage curvature have been proposed by many researchers. Some of the approximte methods widely used in the recent years are the equivalent tensile force method, Miller's method and Branson's method. These methods were, however, somewhat oversimplified and could be too conservative in the case of well cured concrete structure. In this paper, an approximate method for computing shrinkage curvature and deflection is proposed. Curvature due to shrinkage is derived from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of a section and the age-adjusted effective modulus method. The proposed method is verified by comparison with several experimental measurements. The correlations between calculated and measured curvatures is very good.

This paper proposes a method to determine the elastic follow-up factors for the $C(t)$-integral under secondary stress. The rate of creep crack growth for transient creep is correlated with the $C(t)$-integral. Elastic follow-up behavior, which occurs in structures under secondary loading, prevents a relaxation of stress during transient creep. Thus, both the values of $C(t)$ and creep crack growth increase as increasing elastic follow-up. An estimation solution for $C(t)$ was proposed by Ainsworth and Dean based on the reference stress method. To predict the value of $C(t)$ using this solution, an independent method to determine the elastic follow-up factors for cracked bodies is needed. This paper proposed that the elastic follow-up factors for $C(t)$ can be determined by elastic-plastic analyses using the plastic-creep analogy. Finite element analyses were performed to verify this method.

The structural and leakage integrity of steam generator tubes should be sustained all postulated loads with appropriate margin even if a crack is present. During the past three decades, for effective integrity evaluation, several limit load solutions have been used world-widely. However, to predict accurately load carrying capacities of specific components under different conditions, the solutions have to be modified by using lots of experimental data. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new burst pressure estimation scheme based on fracture mechanics analyses for steam generator tube with an axial or circumferential through-wall crack. A series of three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses were carried out and, then, closed-form estimation equations with respect to both J-integral and crack opening displacement were derived through reference stress method. The developed engineering equations were utilized for structural integrity evaluation and the resulting data were compared to the corresponding ones fiom experiments as well as limit load solutions. Thereafter, since the effectiveness was proven by promising results, it is believed that the proposed estimation scheme can be used as an efficient tool for integrity evaluation of cracked steam generator tubes.
It was necessary to devise new techniques to overcome and enhance the resolution limits of traveltime tomography. Waveform inversion has been one of the methods for giving very high resolution result. High resolution image could be acquired because waveform inversion used not only phase but amplitude. But waveform inversion was much time consuming Job because forward and backward modeling was needed at each iteration step. Velocity-stress method was used for effective modeling. Resolution limits of imaging methods such as travel time inversion, acoustic and elastic waveform inversion were investigated with numerical models. it was investigated that Resolution limit of waveform inversion was similar tn resolution limit of migration derived by Schuster. Horizontal resolution limit could be improved with increased coverage by adding VSP data in cross hole that had insufficient coverage. Also, waveform inversion was applied to realistic models to evaluate applicability and using initial guess of travel time tomograms to reduce non-linearity of waveform inversion showed that the better reconstructed image could be acquired.
Prestressing tendons in a nuclear containment building dome are non-axisymmetrically arranged in most cases. However, simple axisymmetric modeling of the containment has been often employed in practice to estimate structural behavior for the axisymmetric loadings such as an internal pressure. In this case, the axisymmetric approximation is required for the actual tendon arrangements in the dome. Some procedures are proposed that can implement the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. Prestressing tendons, which are arranged in 3 or 2-ways depending on a containment type, are converted into an equivalent layer to consider the stiffness contribution in meridional and hoop directions. In order to reflect the prestressing effect, equivalent load method and initial stress method are devised and the corresponding loads or stresses are derived in terms of the axisymmetric model. In a companion paper, the proposed schemes are applied into CANDU and KSNP(Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant) type containments and are verified through some numerical examples comparing the analysis results with those of the actual 3-dimensional model.
