  • This study develops an approximate procedure for incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) using modal pushover analysis (MPA) with empirical equations of the inelastic displacement ratio ($C_R$) and the collapse strength ratio ($R_C$). By using this procedure, it is not required to conduct linear or nonlinear response history analyses of multi- or single- degree of freedom (MDF) systems. Thus, IDA curves can be effortlessly obtained. For verification of the proposed procedure, the 6-, 9- and 20-story steel moment frames are tested under an ensemble of 44 ground motions. The results show that the MPA-based IDA with empirical equations of $C_R$ and $R_C$ produced accurate IDA curves of the MDF systems. The computing time is almost negligible compared to the exact IDA using repeated nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) of a structure and the original MPA-based IDA using repeated nonlinear RHA of modal SDF systems.

  • In this investigation, a set of seismic fragility curves for RC bridges in Korea is derived by considering variations of the representative analytical model. The dimensions and specifications of the model are determined, based on statistical analysis of the inventory of RC bridges in Korea. Variations of important modeling parameters such as material properties, size of structural members, and dimension of the bridge are defined based on statistical studies of the bridges. The OpenSees program is utilized for the analysis to represent the inelastic behavior of RC members. A systematic approach is developed to perform a large volume of inelastic dynamic analysis, in which continuous variation of the modeling parameters are programmed to appropriately represent the characteristics of RC bridges in Korea.

  • In this study, the limit range of input acceleration was investigated based on time domain and response spectrum analyses by considering the relative density, groundwater depth, and soil type. Special attention was paid to the input acceleration and shear modulus of soil, which affect pile behavior. The surrounding soil was identified as an elastoplastic material and subjected to FLAC3D analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb and Finn models as well as FB-Multiplier analysis using a nonlinear p-y curve for soil spring. Based on the analyses, the limit range of acceleration on the pile is much higher for SP soil than for SM soil, and the groundwater level tends to reduce the limit range of input acceleration, irrespective of soil conditions. The limit range of acceleration was mainly affected by the shear modulus. The limit range of acceleration with nonlinear soil behavior is proportional to the relative density of the surrounding soil.

  • In spite of its many strong points, pole-pole electrode configuration is not often used for ground electrical resistivity survey except for bore hole survey as normal logging and for archaeological investigation. Above all, poor spatial resolution of pole-pole survey may be responsible for this. But recent experiences so far gained by the present authers lead them to think that pole-pole survey can be at least a viable means of reconnaissance survey in near-surface conductive environment and an effective interpretational scheme may augment its resolution. As well known, a response of any other electrode configuration is a linear combination of pole-pole responses. Based on this principle of linear superposition and the principle of reciprocity, the other 'responses' can be derived with simple additions and subtractions of pole-pole responses. Though such responses are not always correct due to the adverse effects of noises, combined with the potential decay curves, they can be helpful to interprete better pole-pole survey data especially in connection of the resolution. This can be comparable to the use of the first or second derivatives of gravity and magnetic intensity surveys.

  • As the incidence direction of ground motion (or seismic wave) changes, the seismic response of the structure will also change according to that direction. In order to analyze the effect of the seismic response of the example bridge according to the direction of incidence of ground motion, the acceleration response spectra (Sa-T1) corresponding to the 1-second period obtained for various angles of incidence were obtained. Using Sa-T1, 40 sets of orthogonal pairs of horizontal component seismic waves corresponding to 5 types of percentiles were generated. Seismic vulnerability analysis of the bridge piers was performed by obtaining the seismic response of an example bridge according to the direction of incidence of ground motion. By analyzing the seismic vulnerability analysis of seismic waves corresponding to five types of percentiles, it was found that the median value of the seismic vulnerability curve differs by about 1.2 to 2.6 times depending on the incident direction of the seismic wave. In other words, depending on the incidence direction of seismic waves, the degree of damage to the bridge structure can vary by about 1.2 to 2.6 times.

  • A method to estimate damage of bridge structures is developed using system identification approach. Dynamic behavior of damaged structures is represented by a non-linear hysteretic moment model. Structural properties can be evaluated through system identification. To incorporate variability of the structural properties and uncertainties of structural response, damage is represented as random quantities. Numerical example is shown for the bridge structure under different ground excitation.

  • Many items, as internal pressure, thrust, temperature, strain, etc. are measured in Ground Firing Test (GFT) of rocket motors. But these items are influenced by various phenomena occurred during propellant combustion. In this study, natural frequencies of motor itself and system(motor+loadcell) on Stand were measured. Also motor responses were measured during burning and analyzed so that the vibration characteristics occurred during GFT and the causes and characteristics of vibration signal appearing on thrust curve were identified.

  • In this study, the applicability and validity of collocation method to nonlinear vibration issues in comparison to other solutions are confirmed, and the applicability of collocation method to nonlinear dynamic response issues in comparison to the response curve with F.E.M results is examined. Also, it is also examined how the influence of axial inertia varies according to the size of slenderness ratio.

  • This paper deals with the position control fur a feed drive system in CNC milling machine, which utilizes a modified error signal for the elimination of steady-state error. A linear time-invariant (LTI) system has consistent properties in response to standard test signal inputs. Those also appear in an error curve acquired from the response. From such properties, constructed is an error model for the position control of the feed drive. And then added is the output of the error model to the current error signal. Consequently the resulting proportional control system brings performance improvement in view of the steady-state error. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is confirmed through simulations and experiments.
