Data were collected from 276 patients who visited emergency center of E University Hospital during 3 months period form March 1, to May 31, 1999. The results were as follows: 1. Distribution of pediatric patients according to Clinical Classification System, class I(59.9%) topped followed by class II(23.9%), class III(14.1%), class IV(2.0%). Average score of pediatric patients according to Clinical Classification System showed class I.00, class II .02, class III .05, class IV .07. and total mean score of items lowed averaged .01. 2. With the resepect to the Clinical Classification System according to the pediatric patients visiting emergency center, there were stastically significant difference in visiting time($x^2=27.839$, P=.023), experience of admission($x^2=11.365$, p=.010), disease classification($x^2=89.998$, p=.000), state of airway patency($x^2=18.781$, p=.000), consciousness level($x^2=59.774$, p=.000), period of symptom manifestation($x^2=34.112$, p=.000), pediatric patients protector's thinking about pediatric patients state($x^2=49.998$, p=.000), treatment outcome($x^2=72.278$, p=.000), duration of stay at emergency center($x^2=103.062$, p=.000). 3. There were significant correlation between the state of pediatric patients and Clinical Classification System(r=.530, p=.000).
Purpose : This study aimed to examine factors affecting radiation protective behaviors among emergency room nurses by assessing knowledge, attitude, and environment for radiation protection. Methods : The study employed a cross-sectional design. Subjects were a convenience sample of 129 nurses working in emergency rooms of three general hospitals. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results : The more the nurses received radiation safety education (t=2.26, p=.026), used protective gear (t=4.40, p<.001), and took health screenings (t=2.65, p=.009), the higher their levels of radiation protection behavior. There were significant relations between radiation protective behaviors and attitude (r=.27, p=.002), and radiation protective behaviors and environment for radiation protection (r=.55, p<.001). The factors affecting radiation protective behaviors were protective environment (β=.53, p<.001), protective attitude (β=.32, p<.001), and the use of protective gear (β=.24, p=.002). Conclusions : The government, hospital administrators, and radiation protection-related organization should adopt the following measures to protect emergency room nurses from radiation: research and development of shield instrument, medical examination for emergency room nurses, protocol development of radiation protection behaviors, extension of education chances of radiation protection, and encouraging the use of protective equipment.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate symptoms experienced by patients who reported fever at the emergency room (ER) and to identify any existing cluster of symptom related to fever. Methods: The study used a retrospective and descriptive design with secondary data analysis. Data were abstracted from 665 medical records of patients with fever who visited ER from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016 at a tertiary hospital. Results: The most frequently reported symptoms included cold (43.9%), myalgia (24.1%), headache (16.2%), general weakness (15.3%), respiratory symptoms (12.3%), gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (12.0%), mental change (4.5%), sweating(1.8%), and warmth (0.9%). Analysis of the symptoms related to fever revealed seven symptom clusters; Cluster 1 (n=190) included cold (100%) and myalgia (28.9%); Cluster 2 (n=37), headache (100%) and myalgia (32.4%); Cluster 3 (n=33), GI symptoms (100%), general weakness, headache, and cold; Cluster 4 (n=34), cold (100%), myalgia, headache, and respiratory symptoms; Cluster 5 (n=241), respiratory symptoms (10.8%); Cluster 6 (n=76): myalgia (75.0%) and general weakness, and Cluster 7 (n=54), cold (87.0%), general weakness, and respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: The results of this comprehensive symptom assessment are hoped to be helpful in developing better symptom management for ER patients with fever than before. Further research is warranted to verify the symptom clusters of this study in different clinical settings.

Purpose: The study evaluated a program to shorten EMC stay time. Methods: The subjects were EMC patients, and comprised a control group of 8,477 and an experimental group of 8,378. Data were collected from June 2006 to August 2007, and analyzed concerning stay time for doctor visit, decision making, and discharge. The data were analyzed by $X^2$-test and ANCOVA using SPSS14.0. Result: The stay time of doctor visit, decision making and discharge of the experimental group was significantly less compared to the control group. Using second and third grade triage criteria, the stay time of experimental group was statistically reduced from the control. Conclusion: The implemented shortening program was effective in reducing EMC stay time and increasing EMC effectiveness.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate pediatric nurse parent partnership and factors associated with this partnership. Methods: A survey was conducted with 158 nurses working in pediatric practice at one of 7 hospitals in Seoul, Incheon, and Chungcheongbuk Province. Data were collected from September to December 2013, and analyzed with SPSS Windows 21.0. Results: In hierarchial multiple regression analysis, self-efficacy (${\beta}$=.19, p=.016), clinical decision making (${\beta}$=.15, p=.046), and empowerment (${\beta}$=.29, p=.001) were associated with pediatric nurse parent partnership, after adjusting for marital status, children, education, position and satisfaction with work unit. These factors accounted for 44.0% of the variance in the pediatric nurse parent relationship. Conclusion: These results suggest that pediatric nurse parent partnership could be influenced by the predictors. Ultimately, intervention programs focusing on these factors should be effective in helping pediatric nurses improve partnership with parents.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess exposure to traumatic events, knowledge and attitudes concerning post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the level of resilience among nurses and paramedics working in emergency departments. Methods: Data were collected from May 22 to June 12, 2022, using a self-administered survey questionnaire. The participants comprised 135 nurses and 80 paramedics working in emergency departments. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, a t-test, and an analysis of variance with Scheffé's test. Results: Compared with emergency room nurses, paramedics were more positive about the government's spending on job opportunities for people with PTSD. There were no significant differences in attitude regarding government strategies and people with PTSD between nurses and paramedics. Paramedics had higher scores on the effective treatment for PTSD, while emergency room nurses showed higher scores on effective psychotherapy. General knowledge of PTSD differed according to sex (t=-2.33, p=.021) and education level (F=3.21, p=.042). Resilience scores differed significantly according to sex (t=2.02, p=.045), education level (F=4.10, p=.018), self-reported economic state (F=10.34, p<.001), and self-reported health (F=11.57, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings support that emergency department nurses and paramedics are in need of self-care programs to support their mental health and indicate that intervention programs should be developed to enhance resilience in emergency department professionals.
The purpose of this study was to develop a scenario suited for our clinical situations and evaluate the application possibility by evaluating students' problem solving ability and learning satisfaction in simulation learning. This study consisted of contents which could be applied for varied situations such as complications and symptoms related to liver cirrhosis, looking into hyperkalemia symptoms of patients with liver cirrhosis in emergency unit. The stage of developing scenario was organized in the order of setting simulation learning objectives and situations of scenario, making algorithm, writing checklists of clinical performance appraisal, and debriefing. The scenario was constructed with monitor setting(actions), patient/mannequin(actions), expected interventions(events), and cues in chronological order, according to the scenario progression outline of Jeffries (2007). The scenario was used in 2011, consisting of 4-5 people per group of 53 senior nursing students who registered for 'clinical performance appraisal' course. The problem solving ability improved from a score of 4.05 before simulation learning to a score of 4.30 after simulation learning (t=-3.97, p<.001). The score for learning satisfaction after the simulation learning was high (4.09/5). Considering that simulation learning encouraged students to be the main body of class, this learning method can be the effective way of nursing education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy on anxiety of patients in emergency room. Methods: The study was designed using a noneqivalent control group nonsynchronized design. For 20 minutes, the experimental group(22 patients) had listened to music and the control group(23 patients) had bed rest. A six-item state anxiety scale developed by Marteau and Bekker, which was based on Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, blood pressure and pulse rate were measured to all study participants before and after the intervention. The data was analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: 1) The experimental group's state anxiety level were significantly lower than the control group's(t=2.220, p=.032). 2) There were no significant differences in both group's diastolic(t=-.495, p=.623) and systolic blood pressure(t=831, p=.411). 3) The experimental group's pulse rate was significantly lower than the control group's(t=2.363, p=.023). Conclusion: Music therapy may be applied as a nursing intervention to decrease anxiety in emergency room.

Purpose: To analyse hospital nurse staffing level of the general nursing unit, ICU, ER and OR in general hospitals. Method: The study sample was 105 acute general hospitals which had reported the bed size and number of nurses by the nursing units. Number of bed per nurse was analysed by the hospital characteristics and the staffing levels of the doctors and the nursing assistant personnels using t-test or ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. Results: Number of bed per nurse was 3.86 in general nursing units and 0.95 in ICU. Tertiary hospitals employed more nurses in general nursing units and ICU than general hospitals. Hospitals located in Seoul and public hospitals employed more ICU nurses. OR nurse staffing level was higher in academic hospitals. Hospital size was positively correlated with nurse staffing level of the general nursing unit, ICU, ER and OR respectively. Total nurse staffing level of the hospital was positively correlated with doctor and nursing assistant personnels staffing levels. Conclusion : Differentiated nursing fee schedule was needed to implement in ER or OR. Regulation policy should be needed for the hospitals which violated hospital nurse staffing level of the law.
