  • The objective of this study was to examine the degree of job stress and drinking levels among emergency room nurses and to investigate the association between these variables. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires completed by 106 nurses working in emergency room of hospitals from 3 different cities. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program. The results showed that the mean job stress score was 45.93±6.81 points, while 18.9% of the subjects were in the disordered alcohol use group. Differences in drinking levels were found according to the work experience of the nurses (χ2=8.249, p=.041), while significant differences in job stress scores were found according to marital status (t=-2.72, p=.008) and desire to continue working (t=-2.272, p=.025). There was a significant correlation between job stress and drinking level (r=-.147, p= .000). Measures to lower job stress among emergency room nurses are need based on the findings in the study and it is expected that decreasing the drinking level of nurse would contribute to this.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to describe and compare how emergency room (ER) nurses and coroners perceive good death and their attitudes toward death. Methods: A survey was performed with 51 ER nurses in P city and 44 coroners nationwide. Data were collected from October 1, 2010 through February 28, 2011. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANCOVA, Scheffe's test using the IBM SPSS statistics 21.0 program. Results: For the perception of good death and attitudes toward death, coroners scored higher ($3.01{\pm}0.43$ and $2.87{\pm}0.35$, respectively) than ER nurses group ($2.95{\pm}0.40$ and $2.61{\pm}0.33$, respectively), but the differences were not significant. The results of perception of good death and attitudes toward death were not statistically significant between ER nurses and coroners. Conclusion: The study showed no difference between ER nurses' perception of good death and attitudes toward death and those held by coroners. The findings of the study show that it is necessary to offer steady education on death to nurses and coroners to help them build a proper understanding of good death and grow positive attitudes toward death.

  • The aim of this study is to identify the influence of low back pain experienced by emergency room (ER) nurses and the mediating effect of impairments in the activities of daily living (ADL). The subjects of the study were 188 clinical nurses employed in emergency rooms at high-level hospitals in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The collected data were analyzed using a program called SPSS 22.0, and the methods used include descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The results of the study are as follows: First, low back pain in emergency room nurses positively correlated with impairments in the ADL and depression. Impairments in the ADL also positively correlated with depression. Second, low back pain in ER nurses influenced their depression, which was found to be mediated by the ADL.

  • Overcrowding in an Emergency Department (ED) of hospital is a common phenomenon. To improve the service quality and system performance of the ED, a task assignment rule for the Registered Nurses (RNs) is proposed in this paper. At each task assignment point, the rule prioritizes all treatment requests based on the urgency which is determined by the multiple attributes such as accomplishment time of treatment task, elapsed time of treatment request, total remain time to patient discharge, and number of remain treatments. The values of partial urgency with a single criterion are determined and then overall urgency is computed to find the most urgent one among current requests with the importance weights assigned to the criteria. Through computer simulation, the performance of the proposed rule is compared with current rule in terms of the length of stay and system throughput in a simplified ED system of the hospital M.
