Comparative Study of Dietary Habits, Mini Dietary Assessment Scores, and Health Interest between Female Students in the Department of Food and Nutrition and Other Departments, Sahmyook University (식품영양학 전공 및 비전공 여대생의 식습관 및 건강관심도에 관한 비교 연구 - 삼육대학교를 중심으로 -)

  • The dietary habits of 156 female college students in the Department of Food and Nutrition (n=79) and other departments (n=77) at Sahmyook University, Nowon-gu, Seoul were evaluated from September to December, 2009. All participants completed a questionnaire designed to determine the mini dietary assessment score, as well as to evaluate nutrient intake, healthrelated questions and to determine a physical score. The students in the department of food and nutrition tended to consume more vegetables than Kimchi for each meal (39.2%), fried foods twice a week (38.0%) (p<0.05) and less fruits and fruit juices (29.1%). In addition, 15.2% of students ate Samgyeopsal and Galbi less than two times a week (p<0.05). The subjects in the department of food and nutrition took less vitamin $B_1$ and more vitamin C and E than the subjects in the other departments (p<0.05). All subjects regularly exercised for 30 minutes to 1 hour (45.7%), one or two times weekly (43.5%). The subjects in the other departments consumed more nutrient supplements. Overall, 69.1% of the subjects consumed nutrient supplements. A total of 87.8% of the subjects in the other departments consumed alcoholic beverages and all subjects began to drink when they were in high school (50.4%). The primary reason given to continue drinking was to maintain good relationships with friends (76.7%). Overall, the results of this study indicate that students in the department of food and nutrition of Sahmyook university have better dietary habits and nutrient intake than those in other departments. The results highlight the necessary to introduce a practical method of inducing good dietary habits to the everyday life of students. One approach may be to provide greater opportunity for students in other departments to attend classes in the department of food and nutrition.

A Study on the Relationship between Health Food and Health-Related Factors by Residence and Sex in Tong-Yeong Area (거주지역 및 성에 따른 통영지역주민의 건강식품 이용실태 및 건강관련 제요인과의 관련성)

  • In order to investigate the relationship between intake conditions of health food and health-related factors by residence and sex in Tong-Young area, a survey was carried out from 1,303 adults. Health foods were classified 3 groups including vitamin and mineral supplements, toner foods and manufactured health food supplements. Health-related factors were stress, fatigue, smoking and drinking. The $29.5\%$ of the subjects had taken some health food for health. Especially the male took more toner foods habitually than the female did. In take of vitamin and mineral supplements by residence, there was a significant difference $(p\leq0.01)$ as follows. The subjects in island $(20.0\%)$ who took vitamin/mineral supplements were about two times as compared with the subjects in Dong $(10.8\%)$, or Eub-Myeon $(10.0\%)$. The subjects taking supplementary food replied over fair $(82.8\%)$, the subjects taking toner food replied over fair (90.3$\%$) scored higher than who replied bad or very bad in self-perceived health status. Therefore, the better the subjects felt self-perceived health status, the more they took health foods for health themselves. In self-perceived stress status, the subjects who replied a little $(50.0\%,\;45.3\%)$ or little $(19.9\%,\;26.4\%)$, took vitamin and mineral supplements or manufactured health foods a lot. In toner food there was a significant correlation $(p\leq0.05)$ as follows. The less the subjects felt stress, the more they took dietry supplement. No smoker $(12.9\%)$intake rate of vitamin and mineral supplements was higher than smoker $(8.8\%)$. Smokers $(6.5\%)$ intake rate of toner food was higher than no smoker $(4.0\%)$. It was not significant the relationship between intake condition of health food and drinking. The main motivation for taking health food were by self-decision and invitation of friends or neighbors.

Degree of Daily Living Activity and Depression in the Rural Elderly (일부(一部) 농촌지역(農村地域) 재택노인(在宅老人)들의 일상생활(日常生活) 활동(活動) 및 우울정도(憂鬱程度))

  • In other to study functional capacity of the daily living activity and depression in the rural 394 people(154 men and 250 women), over 65 year old, who are living in Koryung County of Kyungpook Province were interviewed using questionnaire during the period February 14 to March 30 1996. The percentage of ADL dependent patient who cannot perform one item or more was 20.1% in men and 22.5% in women. The percentage of IADL dependent people who cannot perform one item or more was 72.1% in men and 56.2% in women. The prevalence of depression in female(68.8%) was higher than that in male(59.1%). There was statistically significant association between ADL score and other variables(sex, age religion, living with spouse, family resident, living expenses, self-rated health status, leisure, satisfactory of pocket money, drinking)(p<0.05). There was statistically significant association between IADL and other variables(age, education, living with spouse, family resident, living expenses, satisfactory of pocket money, smoking, self-rated health status)(p<0.05). The prevalence of depression in dependent elderly was significantly related with ADL in both genders(p<0.05), however, not related with IADL. In conclusion, the functional capacity dependency and the prevalence of depression in the rural elderly was high and depression was significantly related with ADL score.

The comparative study on changes in job satisfaction and turnover intention according to the convergence mediating factors and the level of emotional labor in dental hygienists (치과위생사의 감정노동수준과 매개변수 융합에 따른 직무만족 및 이직의도 변화 비교 연구)

  • Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes in job satisfaction and turnover intention according to the level of Emotional labor and the mediating effect in dental hygienists. Higher levels of emotional labor resulted in lower levels of job satisfaction, as well as higher levels of turnover intention. We used the logistic regression analysis to compare change of job satisfaction, turnover intention according to the level of emotional labor. In logistic regression analyses, social support was the largest mediating factor between emotional labor and job satisfaction and the odds(Likely to with low job satisfaction) was down by 16% after adjustment for supervisor, colleague. In case of turnover intention, largest mediating factor were drinking, physical condition, supervisor, colleague and the odds(Likely to with high turnover intention) was down by 52% after adjustment for mediating factors. The results of this study were as follows. Emotional labor was negatively impact on job satisfaction and turnover intention. To increase the job satisfaction and lower the turnover intention, it is necessary to do more efforts to improve social support(supervisor and colleague) and management personal factor(drinking, physical condition) for the dental hygienists should be made to reduce such negative effects.

Factors Influencing Perceived Health Status and Life Satisfaction in Rural Residents (일부 농촌 주민들의 주관적 건강상태와 삶의 만족도 관련요인)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to compare rural residents' perceived health status and life satisfaction according to their general and health related characteristics and to identify factors related to perceived health status and life satisfaction in this population. Methods: Subjects were 1,091 adults aged 20 years or older living in Geochang Gun, South Korea. A survey was conducted from June 28 to August 25, 2009. We used the health self rating scale by Lawton et al. (1982) and the overall life satisfaction scale by Wrosch et al. (2000). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0. Result: Sex, age, education, spouse, medical diagnosis, currently taking medication, main health maintenance behavior, alcohol consumption, frequency of alcohol consumption, exercise, family harmony, and friend relationships were significantly related to perceived health status. Age, education, spouse, main health maintenance behavior, smoking, exercise, family harmony, and friend relationships were significantly related to life satisfaction. Further, 29.3% of the variance in perceived health status could be explained by medical diagnosis, exercise, family harmony, education, currently taking medication, and friend relationships, while 11.1% of the variance in life satisfaction could be explained by family harmony, perceived health status, main health maintenance behavior, and friend relationships. Conclusion: Health management programs must be designed so as to incorporate the general and health related characteristics of rural residents if they aim to improve the perceived health status and life satisfaction in that population.

Stress and Dietary Life of College Students in Daejeon Area(II) (대전지역 대학생의 스트레스와 식생활관리 조사(II))

  • We have published a paper which is on stress and dietary life for college students considering weight, height, BMI by the sex of them. It was on obesity index, stress durability and stress strength, meal intake by stress, stress reduction and stress relief for the sample students. In this paper, we monitored taste changing of their favorite food under stresses, feeling after food intake for stress relief, score of stress with life style, strength of stress correlated with characteristic and BMI. The students preferred hot and sweet taste on their stress. However there is no difference feeling their stress after taking food for stress relief by ages, major area and monthly expenses. The stress is more severe for them according to do not sleeping and health status. The stress is not affected by exercising, smoking, drinking alcohols, healthcare mind in their life. The impetuous students get more stress easily but the stress is not affected on BMI. As a result, we need to provide them a nutrition education program that guide the students to improve their dietary life style and practice of their life attitude.

A Study on Nutritional Intake Status and Health-related Behaviors of the Elderly People in Gyeongsan Area (경산시 노인의 영양섭취상태 및 건강관련인자에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate nutrients intake and health-related behaviors in elderly people residing in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk who have no problem in daily living. Information on general characteristics of the elderly, health-related behaviors and dietary habits were obtained by interview based on questionnare. Dietary nutrients intake data were obtained through the 24 recall method. The subject group of this study was composed of 113 males and 112 females, the average age being $73.1\pm6.06$ years old. In health related factors, $76.9\%$ of subjects exercised regularly. The rates of alcohol drinking and smoking showed to be $38.2\%\;and\;22.2\%$, respectively. There were many elderly with neuralgia, hypertension, and gastrointestinal disease, especially female were worse. Average heights of the subjects were lower than the standard established in the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances, and average weights were similar to the standards. The mean BMI and WHR were 24.8 (male 23.7, female 25.7) and 0.92 (male 0.92, female 0.89), respectively. Most of the subjects had a regular meal pattern comsuming three meals a day, and many elderly, especially more than $79.5\%$ of female, prepared the meals for themselves. Mean daily energy intakes and RDA percentage of energy intakes of the male and female subjects were estimated as 1426.9kcal $(79.3\%)$ and 1381.3 kcal $(86.3\%)$, respectively. Mean daily intakes of nutrients were estimatied as 48.1g for protein, 411.3mg for calcium, 8.05mg for iron, 541.8 R.E. for vitamin A, 0.84mg for vitamin $B_1$, and 0.79mg for vitamin $B_2$. Most nutrients except protein, clacium, iron and vitamin $B_2$ were consumed over $75\%$ of the RDA. Female elderly showed significant lower intakes (p<0.05) for most of the nutrients except calcium, phosphorus and vitamin ethan the elderly male.

A Comparative Analysis of Mental Status, Dietary Life and Nutritional Status among Senior Citizens With or Without Leisure Activities in Urban Area (수도권 거주 노인들의 여가활동 유무에 따른 정신건강 수준, 식생활 실태 및 영양상태 비교 분석)

  • The study aims to examine that regular leisure activity of the elderly has a beneficial effect to enhance their health condition. The elderly subjects of 164 (82 of elderly who do leisure and 82 of elderly who do not leisure) aged over 60 years in Suwon area were employed. Survey questionnaires were administered to investigate general characteristics, life style, mental status, dietary life and nutritional status. From the findings, the elderly who do leisure were highly educated, better in living status and higher employment rate. The mental status of the elderly without leisure activity was very much inferior to that of the elderly with leisure activity, representing higher prevalence rate of depression. Furthermore, the elderly who do not leisure showed higher drinking and smoking rates, irregular eating habits, poor teeth condition and chewing style as well as having eating obstacles. Mean caloric intake of both the elderly was also lower than that of RDA. The elderly who do not leisure have shown lower intakes in most of essential nutrients in contrast to the elderly who do leisure. In conclusion, the elderly with regular leisure activity seemed to have better life style and mental status, dietary life and nutritional status. Therefore, it is critically important to establish the health program combined with various leisure activity for the seniors to promote and energize the later years of life.

Alcohol Consumption and Related Dietary Behavior of College Students in Chungbuk Area (충북 일부지역 대학생의 음주정도에 따른 식생활비교)

  • This study was carried out to investigate alcohol consumption and dietary behavior of college students in the Chungbuk area. Alcohol consumption, dietary behavior, food preferences, food intake frequency and one-day dietary records were surveyed using questionnaires given to 387 college students. The mean heights and weights of subjects were $175.0{\pm}5.6cm\;and\;69.1{\pm}9.3kg$ in males, and $162.5{\pm}4.8cm\;and\;52.3{\pm}7.9kg$ in females. About 89% of subjects (male 90.6%, female 87.3%) consumed alcohol, and most of them had experienced their first drink due to peer pressure in high school. Usually the subjects were drinking with their friends 1-2 times/week and the amount of alcohol consumed was one or more bottles of Soju. More than 69% of the subjects had tried to quit drinking but more efficient campaigns promoting non-drinking behavior are still necessary since the recognition of the hazards of alcohol seemed not enough to convince college students to stop. The dietary behavior of college students was generally inadequate showing indifference to dietary balance, irregularity of meals, and skipping breakfast. It was more inadequate in the frequent drinking group. In the drinking group, while the food intake frequency scores for milk & dairy products, and fruits were significantly lower, the scores for fast food, frozen food and instant ramen were significantly higher. The mean DVS and DDS were found to be 12.61 and 3.93, respectively, and there was no significant difference shown by alcohol consumption. The dietary management of college student needs to be improved in many aspects. It is further troubled by alcohol consumption. Therefore, a nutrition education program including information on the hazards of alcohol and responsible drinking should be developed and provided.

Analysis of Health Behaviors of Selected Health Professionals in South Korea (한국 보건전문가들의 보건행동에 관한 분석)

  • 본 연구는 한국 보건전문가들의 보건행동을 조사하고, 보건행동간의 상호 관련 요인과 보건행동에 영향을 미치는 인구학적 요인을 분석하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구 대상으로는 한국보건협회 산하의 8개의 보건 관련 학회 중에서 보건교육과 가장 관련이 있는 한국보건교육학회(212명)와 한국보건 간호학회 (124명) 회원 336명이 선정되었다. 본 연구의 도구는 미국에서 이미 실시된 여러 보건행동 연구를 기초로 하여 focus group discussion, back-translation, 전문가들의 panel discussion, 그리고 pilot test(사전조사)를 통하여 한국인의 보건행동 연구를 위해 타당하게 개발되었다. 본 연구를 위하여 1995년 약 두달동안(11월, 12월), 3차에 걸친 우편설문조사를 실시하여 64.3%의 응답회수율을 보였고, 응답자들의 보건행동을 분석하기 위해서 factor analysis(요인분석)와 ANOVA (변량분석) 방법을 사용하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 조사응답자의 분포는 남자가 33.8%, 여자가 66.2%였고, 응답자의 80.3%가 석사 이상의 학위를 소유하고 있었다. 응답자들의 전공분야는 다양하였고, 그들 중에서 36.3%가 간호학, 24.4%가 공중보건학을 전공하였다. 응답자 중 과반수 이상이 학교에 근무하였고, 서울에 거주하였으며, 응답자의 평균 직장 근무연수는 14년 이였다. 2. 응답자들의 보건행동에 대한 요인분석 적용의 적합성을 사전검증하기 위하여 Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity (630.37, p〈.00)를 실시하였다. 응답자들의 보건행동을 요인분석한 결과, 17개의 보건행동으로 구성된 네가지 보건행동요인들이 추출되었다. 응답자들의 네가지 보건행동요인들은 다음과 같다: (1) 규칙적인 식사 및 과일 섭취 (2) 음주 및 흡연 (3) 외식,간식 및 카페인 음료 섭취 (4) 운동 및 휴식 3. 응답자들의 인구학적 요인과 네가지 보건행동요인들과의 관계를 분석한 결과, 성별(F=69.59, df=1,203, p〈.05), 교육정도(F=3.48, df=3,199, p〈.05) 그리고 직장(F=4.04, df=3,201, p〈.05)에 따라 음주 및 흡연 행동에 커다란 차이를 보였다. 또한 응답자의 직장 근무연수(F=2.39, df=5,185, p〈.05)에 따라 운동 및 휴식 행동에 커다란 차이를 보였다.
