  • The conversion of solar energy into acoustic waves is experimentally studied. Measurements were made on the Sound Pressure Level (SPL), frequency, onset time and the temperature gradient across the stack. A pyrex resonance tube is used with a honey-comb structure ceramic stack along with Ni-Cr and Cu wires. An AL1 acoustical analyzer was used to measure the SPL and frequency of acoustic waves whereas K-type thermocouples were hired to estimate temperature gradients. For a resonance tube of 100mm, no acoustic waves were generated with a power input of 25W. By increasing its length to 200mm, however, maximum SPLs of 96.4 dB, 106.3 dB and 112.8 dB were detected for the tubes of 10mm, 20mm and 30mm in IDs and their respective stack positions of 70mm, 60mm and 50mm from the closed end.

  • It has been noted, in case of the apartments in collective form, the drainage noise from cleaning of toilet causes many problems in the basement and adjacent rooms, mainly hampering the pleasant housing environment. The problems are increasingly raised by civil complaints with the public offices. Therefore, if the drainage noise generates when wash out of toilet bowl is grasped how the characteristics change according to the sorts of drainpipe, it is considered that the establishment of an effective sound insulation countermeasure could be possible when a civil petition against the drainage noise of apartment house is submitted hereafter. On such viewpoint, this study measured and analyzed the characteristics of drainage noise per the type of drainage pipe, according to KS A ISO $1996-1{\sim}3$, with the horizontal branch pipe and riser pipes in the drainage noise experiment chamber which has the characteristics of the anechoic room. In the result, the pipe type with excellent noise reduction function. The result of this study is considered to become available as fundamental data, to take actions on reduction of drainage noise of the ceiling piping method.

  • Recently, The demands for the reduction of noise generated by transformers have been increasing. Almost all of the noise generated by transformers is a result of magnetostricitive vibration in the core. The noise radiates into the atmosphere from the tank through the insulation oil. As the noise of transformer irritates residents, needs for decreasing the noise of transformer have been arised. One method of reduction such a noise is to build a free-standing enclosure of concrete and steel plates around the transformer. However, this method has some disadvantages. Another method of noise reduction is to mount a close-fitting sound insulation panel on the side of a transformer tank. Side plate vibrations of transformer are transmitted to such a sound insulation panel along two paths. In one case, they are transmitted through air by sound pressure and in the other through supporting structures. In the paper, the vibration and noise effect which is transferred from reinforce channel to insulation panel generated by transformer have been identified for the several kinds of insulation panel and damping sheet analytically and experimetally.

  • Acoustic power transmission loss(TL) is an important performance of the muffler system. TL will be affected by the velocity of the fluid in duct since acoustic pressure varies according to the fluid velocity. In this paper, two kinds of fluid model, potential flow and turbulent flow, for the fluid flowing in simple expansion chamber are considered. The effects of their two fluid models in acoustic TL are investigated for the straight and L-shaped simple expansion chamber. In higher frequency range, the characteristics of TL of the two fluid models show different results. The variation of TL according to the fluid velocity is shown more distinctly when turbulence model is used. Turbulent flow model should be used to obtain better estimation of acoustic TL in higher frequency range.

  • This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics and reduction of impulse noises emitted from a high voltage COS(Cut Out Switch) fuse of a transformer. When a high voltage COS fuse becomes a short circuit by the over current. The peak sound Pressure above 150dB(A) is generated. In this study, an impulse noise generator is designed for generating the impulse noises similar to the noise level of COS fuse, which is utilized to test the noise reduction of a reactive silencer. The reactive silencers have been tested for 10 different types with each different porosity, hole diameter and length. From the experimental results, it is found that the reactive silencer has an excellent performance to greatly suppress the impulse noise and that its performance is closely connected with the porosity and hole diameter.

  • Accurate measurement of seafloor topography plays a crucial role in developing marine industries such as maritime safety, resource exploration, environmental protection, and coastal management. The seafloor topography is constructed using side scan sonar (SSS) and single beam echosounder (SBES) or multibeam echosounder (MBES), which transmit and receive ultrasound waves through a device attached to a marine survey vessel. However, the use of a sonar system is affected by noise pollution areas, and the single beam has a limited scope of application. At the same time, the multibeam is mainly applicable for depth observation. For these reasons, it is difficult to determine the boundaries and areas of seafloor topography. Therefore, this study proposes a method to improve the backscatter data of multibeam echosounder, which has a relationship with the seafloor quality, by using digital image processing to classify the shape of the underwater surface.

  • There have been always some difficulties in target setting and conditioning of acoustic performances of the Korean traditional music hall due mainly to the lack of the information on the sound radiation characteristics of Korean musical sources. In this study, the radiation characteristics of four typical Korean traditional musical sources were investigated in precision and their usage was demonstrated: The selected musical sources were Gayageum (string), Daegeum (woodwind), Jango (drum), and Pansori Chang (vocal performance). Each sound source was located at the center of a semi-anechoic chamber and the directivity was determined by the measured sound pressure levels in every 10° angular position, for both vertical and horizontal directions. The directivity pattern of Gayageum varies from a uniform to a complex pattern having many side lobes with the increase of frequency. The main radiation of Daegeum is toward the upward direction. The directivity pattern of Jango is clearly a side-oriented one and the left direction intensity is sharper than its right side at low frequencies. For the Chang, the directivity pattern change from a uniform pattern to a frontally directed one as the frequency goes high. Measured directional and spectral characteristics of traditional Korean music sources were implemented into the computation of architectural acoustic measures for the Busan National Korean Traditional Music Hall which is under construction. Parameters such as RT, SPL, C80, IE, STI were calculated at two receiver positions by using a ray tracing technique. Significant differences in the acoustic measures at receiver positions were observed between the results in using the omni-directional source and the directional one. It is thought that the suggested source data and design method can be used as a basic reference in the future acoustic design of performance halls for the Korean traditional music.

  • The concentration of nitrous oxide in dental environment has increased especially in pediatric department. In pediatric department frequently met the behavior disordered patients who need the deep sedation. As the deeply sedated patients could not respond well to verbal command, the amount of mouth breathing would be increased especially with mouth prop which backward transposition of mandible. Inhalation of low concentration of nitrous oxide for a long duration has caused various side effects such as spontaneous abortion and inhibition of methionine synthetase activity which is harmful to DNA synthesis. For evaluation of factors of mouth breathing during deep sedation. The author measured the concentration of nitrous oxide in breathing zone by the change of the scavenging methods. One is drain the gas through the tail part of reservoir bag of Jackson Ree's system naturally. Another is scavenge from tail portion of reservoir bag with negative pressure. Last one is scavenge from nasal mask with negative pressure. The nitrous oxide concentration in breathing zone was the lowest in nasal part drainage but high above the recommended concentration of NIOSH. The order of nitrous concentration in breathing zone was: natural drainage, tail part with negative pressure, nasal part with negative pressure. This would reflect the order of resistance of nasal airway and showed the amount of mouth breathing. From the above experiment, the resistance of nasal airway by the increment of gas flow in corrugating tube and reservoir bag would be one of the causative factors of mouth breathing in deeply sedated patients.
