  • Shin Gwang-su (申光洙, 1712~1775), also known as Seokbuk (石北), is a well-known poet and author of the song poetry (詩唱) "Gwanseo-akbu (Poems of the Gwanseo Region, 關西樂府)" in the late Joseon Dynasty. "Gwanseo-akbu" was popular among the Joseon Dynasty musicians. This fact confirms that the tradition of adding a melody to Shin Gwang-su's "hansi (Korean poetry recorded in Chinese characters, 漢詩)" already existed in the Joseon Dynasty. It is also a proof that the hansi poem was used in songs. Besides Seokbuk, other literary figures in the Joseon Dynasty wrote and sang hansi. In that case, the place of communication for songs was a poet's personal study, or "sarangbang." But when, like the works by Seokbuk, poems were sung by musicians, they became available to the public to communicate through music. This study is one of the attempts to re-make Seokbuk Shin Gwang-su's poems and songs, once popular among the Joseon Dynasty people, into the contemporary music that can be performed on stage. By adding a certain melody to his poems, this study introduces a case of musical work and offers an opportunity to consider hansi as performance art. There is a number of hansi works by Shin Gwang-su, and each poem includes material which can help survey Shin Gwang-su's musical life. And, working on his hansi works makes it possible to narrate major events that took place in Shin's life. Thus, this study attempts to focus Shin Gwang-su's musical life and introduces methods and contents to stage his hansi poems as performance art.

  • The goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between visual and auditive meanings of the film "The Imitation Game"(2013) which is directed by Morten Tyldum, and with music composed by Alexandre Desplat. The author accepted Zwikowski's idea of analyzing how film music and visual information created a chemical and meaningful signal for the audience. Lawrence Zbikowski has used Conceptual Integration Networks (CIN), devised by Golles Fauconnier and Mark Turner, to analyze latent meanings which was produced by the association of visual and auditive meanings. Therefore, The author applied the CIN analyzing methodology to the research combination of music and imagery in "The Imitaion Game." Desplat, the composer, has used aeolian instead of tonality to represent the main character. The aeolian melodic line was changed to create a similar atmosphere of imagery and narratives. The irregular time and minor chord was associated with unstable emotion and familiar intervals, while the major chord was associated with stable feelings. Desplat also applied instrumental diversity and extreme changes of dynamic to create positive or negative cognition. The author, therefore, found how the meanings of auditive materials and visual information combined and emphasized encoded messages in the film.

  • Farmers' band music is a religious ritual in Korea. It is a solemn ritual to exhibit the auspicious holiness of the people to the God. Most of the ritual is accomplished by music. The music of the farmers 'band, in this sense, has its meaning as the expression of holiness by sound. In this paper, I will explore the principle to make various rhythms of farmers' band music, especially focusing on the chaegut (lit. "stroke music"). It is very symbolic because the name of the music shows the strokes of the gong, called jing, in a rhythmic phrase. In this sense, the chaegut is man-made music based on the specific principles in accordance with the strokes of the gong. Among many chaegut rhythms, samchae (lit. "three strokes") to chilchae (lit. "seven strokes") are the main rhythms. They were made after the principle of 'forward with drums, backward with gongs' in Five way procession. It the basic principle of military procession from the early Joseon Dynasty. The procession follows with the sound of the drums and gongs. There was always a principle of "five strokes" to control the procession. The "five strokes" became the basis of the making of chaegut rhythms. The rhythms of the samchae to chilchae are based on the rhythm of samchae. The samchae has three gong strokes in a cycle, which exhibits the chaotic moment with the rhythmic noise. The name of the rhythm exhibits the correspondence of the signifiant, that is the name "three strokes" and the signifié, that is the real three strokes of gongs in music. Other four rhythms has made up from the samchae with half cycles are added in accordance with the strokes of the gongs. In this way, the chaegut shows the principle of "five strokes" in the military procession. The rhythm of ochae jilgut is a mixture of ochae (lit. "five strokes") and jilgut (lit. "road music") which is usually performed on the road to a mountain shrine. The musical structure of ochae jilgut corresponds to the colotomic structure of Southeast Asian music and the 15th-century music of old musical scores. The rhythm of gilgunak chilchae is a mixture of gilgunak (lit. "road military music") and chilchae (lit. "seven strokes"). The rhythmic structure is similar to other regional music, sijo ("short song") of the literati music and norae garak (lit. "some melody") of the shaman music. In sum, the chaegut is very artistic music made from the military procession of the Joseon Dynasty. The name of the rhythm corresponds with the strokes of the gong in a cycle. In this way, the chaegut shows the principle of music-making to exhibit the ritual characteristics of the Korean people.

  • This study aimed to develop a group rap making program and examine its applicability to improve communication skills of adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities (ID). Three adolescents with ID participated in a total of six 50-minute group sessions over 4 weeks. The group rap making program included three stages: understanding the context of communication, learning how to communicate with others, and applying the communicative behaviors in a group setting. To examine changes in the participants' communication skills, the rap lyrics constructed by participants were analyzed and communicative behaviors were observed during sessions and analyzed in terms of asking questions and providing information to others. Also, a social communication skills checklist was rated by the participant's caregivers. The analysis of rap lyrics showed that the expressions included in the rap were diversified as the session proceeded. Changes in observed behaviors supported that participants became to engage in communication with others more actively in order to complete the group rap. While the social communication skills checklist tended to increase, there was a difference in degree of change depending on the level of language communication skills. These results indicate that a group rap making can be an effective option for these adolescents to learn how to communicate with their peers, which presents implications for how rap making can be used for therapeutic purpose with more diversified population.

  • Playing musical instruments has long been a hobby enjoyed by many, whether amateur or professional. However, a lot of long and arduous practice is required if one wants to acquire the skills of musical artist and truly enjoy the pleasure of playing. This repetitive and tedious practice is often a hindrance to the process of learning a musical instrument, and numerous educators have put a lot of research and effort into making the process easier and more fun for students. In addition, various media practice tools are being developed to keep the students engaged and having fun. The core elements of this content primarily include controlling the speed of backing tracks in accordance with the skill level of students and providing a backing ensemble that enables them to enjoy the fun of playing. This paper studies and compares various MIDI playback techniques capable of controlling speed and pitch in smartphone applications. Modern applications of these techniques are seen in music educational contents, as well as entertainment contents. It also discusses the development and launching of Upbeat, a drum-loop metronome that automatically increases speed by applying different techniques to its respective smartphone operating systems, Android OS and iOS.

  • While myriads of small and large festivals are being organized in many regions across the country after the successful establishment of local governments around 2000, the undeniable fact is that the identity and purpose of such events are not properly reflected in their programs. This paper carefully examines the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival as an exemplary case of a local performing art festival to contribute to the improvement of performing art festivals in the future. In particular, it focuses on a musical program with respect to the composition, content, meaning, and direction that can effectively reveal the identity and intention of a festival. The most significant accomplishment of the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival is that it presented a local cultural resource, Pansori, in various ways not only to manifest its identity but also to satisfy both the enthusiasts of such musical genre and the general audience. The achievements of the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival through the performing art program can be summarized as follows: first, it created a new image of traditional music; second, it realized the desire to rise above regional and generational demarcations through cultural communication; third, it provided a stage for budding and local artists; fourth, it served as a vehicle for summoning the public; and last, it was conducive to expanding the spectrum of potential audience. This paper has limitation in covering the subject of the improvement of performing art festivals because it analyzed only one event. In follow-up studies, a more objective discussion should be performed by further analyzing the 2017 Jeonju International Sori Festival in comparison with various other performing art festivals.
