In this study, a spherical carbon composite material containing nano-silicon was synthesized using hydrothermal synthesis, and coated with petroleum pitch to prepare an anode material to investigate the electrochemical characteristics. Hydrothermal synthesis was performed by varying molar concentration, and the pitch was coated using THF as an organic solvent to prepare a composite material. The physical properties of anode materials were analyzed using SEM, EDS, XRD and TGA, and the electrochemical performances were investigated by cycle, C-rate, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests in 1.0 M LiPF6 electrolyte (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%). The pitch-coated silicon/carbon composite (Pitch@Si/C-1.5) with sucrose of 1.5 M showed a spherical shape. In addition, a high initial capacity of 1756 mAh/g, a capacity retention ratio of 82% after 50 cycles, and an excellent rate characteristic of 81% at 2 C/0.1 C were confirmed.
With increasingly strict requirements for advanced energy storage devices in electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary energy storage systems (EES), the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high power density and safety has become an urgent task. Because the performance of LIBs is determined primarily by the physicochemical characteristics of its electrode material, TiO2, owing to its excellent stability, high safety levels, and environmentally friendly properties, has received significant attention as an alternative material for the replacement of commercial carbon-based anode materials. In particular, self-organized TiO2 micro and nanostructures prepared by anodization have been intensively investigated as promising anode materials. In this review, the mechanism for the formation of anodic TiO2 nanotubes and microcones and the parameters that influence their morphology are described. Furthermore, recent developments in anodic TiO2-based composites as anode electrodes for LIBs to overcome the limitations of low conductivity and specific capacity are summarized.

The carbon-coated silicon monoxide (c-SiOx), which is a negative electrode active material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), has a limited cycle performance due to severe volume changes during cycles, despite its high specific capacity. In particular, the significant volume change of the active material can deform the electrode structure and easily damage the electron transfer pathway. To improve performance and mitigate electrode damage caused by volume changes, we replaced parts of the carbon black conducting agent with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) having a linear shape. The content of the entire conductive material in the electrode was fixed at 10% by mass, and the relative content of CNTs ranged from 0% to 25% by mass to prepare electrodes and evaluate electrochemical performance. As the CNT content in the electrode increased, both cycle life and rate capability improved. Even a small amount of CNT can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of a c-SiOx negative electrode with large volume changes. Furthermore, dispersing CNTs effectively can lead to achieving the equivalent performance with a reduced quantity of CNTs.

In this study, effects of the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon on electrochemical behavior as a secondary battery anode material were investigated. A heat treatment at 600 ℃ was performed for coking of petroleum based pitch, and the manufactured coke was heat treated with different heat temperatures at 700~1,500 ℃ to prepare low temperature heated anode materials. The physical and chemical properties of carbon anode materials were studied through nitrogen adsorption and desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis. Also the anode properties of low temperature heated carbon were considered through electrochemical properties such as capacity, initial Coulomb efficiency (ICE), rate capability, and cycle performance. The crystal structure of low temperature (≤ 1500 ℃) heated carbon was improved by increasing the crystal size and true density, while the specific surface area decreased. Electrochemical properties of the anode material were changed with respect to the physical and chemical properties of low temperature heated carbon. The capacity and cycle performance were most affected by H/C atomic ratio. Also, the ICE was influenced by the specific surface area, whereas the rate performance was most affected by true density.
Hollow silicon/carbon (H-Si/C) composites as anode materials for lithium ion batteries were investigated to overcome the large volume expansion. H-Si/C composites were prepared as follows; hollow $SiO_2\;(H-SiO_2)$ was prepared by adding $NaBH_4$ to $SiO_2$ synthesized using $st{\ddot{o}}ber$ method followed by magnesiothermic reduction and carbonization of phenolic resin. The H-Si/C composites were analyzed by XRD, SEM, BET and EDX. To improve the capacity and cycle performance, the electrochemical characteristics of H-Si/C composites synthesized with various $NaBH_4$ contents were investigated by charge/discharge, cycle, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests. The coin cell using H-Si/C composite ($SiO_2:NaBH_4=1:1$ in weight) in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC : DMC : EMC = 1 : 1 : 1 vol%) has better capacity (1459 mAh/g) than those of other composition coin cells. It is found that the coin cell ($SiO_2:NaBH_4=1:1$ in weight) has an excellent capacity retention from 2nd cycle to 40th cycle.
To enhance the performance of anode-supported SOFC, single cell fabrication procedure was changed for better and resulting power generating characteristics of single cell were investigated. Liquid condensation process was employed for the granulation of NiO/YSZ powder mixture and the produced powder granules were compacted into anode green substrate by uni-axial pressing. YSZ electrolyte was printed on green substrate via screen-printing method and co-fired at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. LSM/YSZ composite cathode of which the composition and heat treatment condition was adjusted to minimize the polarization#resistance with AC-impedance spectroscopy, was screen printed. The final single cell size from this multi-step procedure was 5${\times}$5 $\textrm{cm}^2$ and 10${\times}$10 $\textrm{cm}^2$. The maximum power densities of 5${\times}$5 and 10${\times}$10 single cells were about 0.45 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.22 W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 800$^{\circ}C$, which are two times superior than those from single cells fabricated by the conventional process in previous our work.
In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Graphite/Silicon/Pitch anode composites were analyzed to improve the low theoretical capacity of graphite as a lithium ion battery. The Graphite/Silica composites were synthesized by bonding silica onto polyvinylpyrrolidone coated graphite. The surface of used silica was treated with (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane(APTES). Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites were prepared by carbonization of petroleum pitch, the fabrication processes including the magnesiothermic reduction of nano silica to obtain silicon and varying the mass ratio of silica. The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composites were analysed by XRD, SEM and XRD. Also the electrochemical performances of Graphite/Silicon/Pitch composite as the anode of lithium ion battery were investigated by constant current charge/discharge, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in organic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1 vol%). The Graphite/Silicon/Pitch anode composite (silica 28.5 in weight) has better capacity (537 mAh/g). The cycle performance has an excellent capacity retention to 30th cycle of 95% and the retention rate capability of 98% in 0.1 C/0.2 C.

A purification process was performed for the application of natural graphite as an anode material. The influence of the structural change and impurity content of graphite according to the process on the anode electrochemical characteristics was investigated. Natural graphite was chemically/physically purified by acid-treatment which used different amounts of solution of ammonium fluoride/sulfuric acid in the same ratio and thermal treatment used different temperatures (800~2500 ℃). Acid-treatment had limitation to remove impurities, and identified that all impurity contents was removed except some traces of atom such as Si by after progressed thermal-treatment until 2500 ℃. The anode materials characteristic of graphite treated by purification process was improved, and changes in the structure and impurity contents affected dominantly the capacity, rate property and initial Coulombic efficiency. Consequently, the complex purification process improved the graphite structure and also the performance of lithium ion battery by controlling the excessive formation of solid electrolyte interphase and expanding Li+ insertion space originated from the effective removal of impurities.
