혼인과 은퇴 고령 남성의 사망 간의 관계: 미국 은퇴자 종단 자료의 분석 결과

  • 혼인과 사망에 관한 연구 대부분은 혼인상태에 있는 사람이 혼인상태에 있지 않은 사람보다 더 건강하게 오래 산다는 사실을 보여준다. 그 이유는 선별효과와 보호 효과로 설명된다. 선별 효과에 의하면, 건강한 사람이 쇠약한 사람보다 혼인할 가능성이 높다. 그 결과, 독신자 집단은 유배우자 집단에 비해 병약한 사람들이 전체 집단에서 차지하는 비율이 높아 더 높은 사망률을 보인다. 보호효과는 혼인이라는 유대를 통해 배우자들이 건강할 때나 아플 때나 서로의 건강을 염려해 주고 또 경제적 그리고 정신적 문제로 인한 스트레스와 스트레스에 관련된 병을 감소시켜, 혼인상태에 있는 사람들의 사망률을 혼인 상태에 있지 않은 사람들의 사망률보다 낮춰 준다는 것이다. 이 연구에서, 우리는 혼인상태의 은퇴 고령 남성이 독신상태의 은퇴 고령 남성과 유의미한 사망률 차이를 보이지 않지만, 이혼하거나 별거하거나 혹은 배우자가 사망한 상태의 은퇴 고령남성보다는 낮은 사망률을 보인다는 사실을 발견했다. 비록 선별효과를 입증해 보여주지는 못했지만. 혼인을 통한 재정적 복지가 은퇴 고령 남성의 사망에 영향을 미치는 경험적 증거는 발견하였다. 중간 소득과 저소득 사이의 은퇴 고령 남성에서 나타나는 사망률 차이는 그들 건강상태의 차이로 나타난다. 중간소득의 은퇴고령 남성이 저소득의 은퇴 고령 남성보다 약간 더 많은 재정적 복지를 통해 보다 나은 건강상태를 유지하고 그 결과 약간 더 낮은 사망률을 보인다. 반면 고소득의 은퇴한 고령남성에게는 혼인의 재정적 복지뿐 아니라 그들의 소득도 그들의 건강증진 및 사망률 저하에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 동일한 건강상태일지라도, 고소득의 은퇴 고령남과은 타 집단의 고령 남성보다 사망할 가능성이 낮았다.

  • This study investigated the health outcomes of the aged male workers who retired before 2003, using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study data. Empirical study shows that the subjective and objective health conditions of the retiree are worse than the non-retired. And the random-effect panel probit analyses got the results that the effects of retirement on health are different by the retirement reason and the subjective health conditions.

결혼 및 은퇴 상태가 노년기 정신건강에 미치는 영향: 미국 종단자료의 분석

  • 본 연구는 미국 노인의 두 조사 시점에 걸친 결혼 상태(지속적 유배우, 배우자 상실, 지속적 무배우) 및 은퇴 상태(지속적 은퇴, 은퇴 전이 지속적 취업)가 다양한 측면의 정신건강(우울감, 행복감, 자긍심, 통제감)에 미치는 영향 및 이에 대한 성별의 중재효과를 살펴보았다. 이를 위하여 미국 전국규모 종단자료인 National Survey Of Families and Households (T1-T2: 1987-1993)의 50세 이상 응답자 1,798명의 자료가 분석에 포함되었다. 그 결과 T1-T2 간 배우자 상실은 우울감 증가 및 행복감 감소와 연관되는 것으로 나타났다. T1-T2 지속적 무배우 상태는 통제감의 증가와 관련되며, T1-T2지속적 무배우 상태인 남성의 경우는 지속적 무배우 상태의 굴성과 틀리 현저하게 행복감이 저하되는 것으로 나타났다. T1-T2 지속적 은퇴 상태는 우울감 증가, 자긍심 저하, 통제감 저하와 관련되었다. T1-T2 간 은퇴전이는 자긍심 저하와 연관되었다. 은퇴와 정신건강 저하간의 관련성을 일관적으로 제시하는 이상의 결과들은, 은퇴가 노년기 정신건강에 미치는 부정적 영향을 경감시킬 수 있는 보호적 중재요인의 규명에 대한 후속 연구의 필요성을 강력히 시사한다.

The Impact of Retirement on Psychological Well-Being of the Elderly (은퇴가 노인의 심리적 안녕에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the impact of retirement on psychological well-being of the elderly and identifies whether associative factors of psychological well-being differ between retired and non-retired persons. Psychological well-being is measured by the PGCMS developed by Lawton. The sample includes 1,625 older adults aged 60 and over, which derived from the cross-sectional data of the "Aging and the Quality of Life of the Elderly in Korea: A Longitudinal Study" living in Seoul and Chuncheon in 2003. Multivariate OLS regression results show that retirement is not associated with psychological well-being after controlling socio-demographic characteristics, economic status, health status, family and social relations, participation in social activities, and satisfaction with hobbies and learning needs. Also, associative factors of psychological well-being differ between retired and non-retired persons. For retired persons, greater social activities and higher satisfaction with hobbies are associated with the higher level of psychological well-being whereas higher satisfaction with learning needs has a positive relationship with the higher level of psychological well-being for non-retired persons. Discussion and implications of the findings are presented, and limitations of this study are acknowledged.

사회보험(社會保險)의 적정은퇴시기(適正隱退時期) 결정(決定)에 관한 효과분석(效果分析)

  • 사회보험(Social Insurance)은 노령(老齡) 등 미래(未來)에 확실(確實)히 발생(發生)할 사안(事案)뿐 아니라 질병 등 불확실(不確實)한 사안(事案)에 의한 소득(所得)의 상실(喪失)을 보상하기 위한 보험(保險)의 역할을 한다. 대부분의 사회보험연구는 이 불확실성(不確實性)이 배제된 모형의 분석을 하고 있는데 본고(本稿)에서는 그러한 불확실성(不確實性)이 존재(存在)할 때 사회보험이 개인의 은퇴시기 결정에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 사회보험은 노동기(勞動期)로부터 은퇴기(隱退期)로의 소득이전(所得移轉)일 뿐 아니라 일을 할 수 있는 상태로부터 질병 등의 불확실한 사안(事案)에 의해 초래된, 일을 할 수 없는 상태로의 소득이전(所得移轉)도 된다. 이 두 번째의 역할 때문에 사회보험은 개인(個人)의 은퇴시기(隱退時期)를 늦추는 효과를 보일 수 있다. 특히 사회적 최선적정은퇴시기(最善適正隱退時期)(first best optimum)는 사회보험이 전혀 없는 경우의 은퇴시기가 보다 늦다. 반면 어느 일정(一定)한 시점(時點) 이후에만 사회보험(社會保險)의 수혜(受惠)가 가능(可能)하다면 이는 오히려 조기은퇴(早期隱退)를 초래(招來)하게 된다는 것을 보였다.

Study on Health Predictors of Early Retirement of Middle-aged and Elderly Workers in Korea: Proportional Hazard Model Analysis by Employment Type (중·고령자의 건강 악화가 조기은퇴에 미치는 영향 연구-근로형태 별 비례위험모형 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to reduce the reverse-causality and overestimate bias of analysis on how health affected middle-aged and elderly worker's early retirement. From the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA) panel data, I researched 1,049 people who were 45-52 years old in 2006. To eliminate the reverse-causality problem, I used the health data which is surveyed before retirement. To reduce bias, I controlled the health status when retirees worked. The main results are as follows. First, the worsened health still affects the hazard of early retirement, with reducing the endogeneity problem. Second, chronic illness is one of the strong predictors of early retirement to self-employed, and self-reported bad health is the main health predictor of wage workers. These results give two implications; first, the impact magnitude of the health indicator depends on employment type. Each employment type has different flexibility of working hours. It seems that the flexibility can reduce early retirement hazard with health problems. Self-employed, who has more flexibility of working hours can work until they have to stop working due to the serious health problem or doctor's advice. Second, to promote middle-aged and elderly workers to keep working, the long-term health policy which decreases chronic illness is needed.

Trajectories of the elderly's life satisfaction after their retirement: A longitudinal Growth Curve Model (은퇴 후 생활만족도의 종단적 변화와 예측요인 : 잠재성장모형을 이용하여)

  • This study has a purpose to analyze trajectories of life satisfaction of the elderly after their retirement and how the characteristics of individual, retirement and family relationship have an effect on the life satisfaction. This study has investigated the Korean elderly, who had been retired, using the data from three waves(1st wave(2005)~3rd wave(2009) of the Korean Retirement and Income Panel(KReIS). Data analysis has been used to identify the predictors of the intercept and slope related to the life satisfaction after retirement, focusing the trajectories of the life satisfaction after retirement and individual characteristics, retirement characteristics and family relationship with application of the growth curve model by Amos 20.0. First, the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement was somewhat below average. Life satisfaction averagely increased little by little from 1st wave to 3rd wave. Second, by conducting the conditional growth curve model, the study revealed that the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement is high on individual characteristics(sex, educational level, income, health status) and in retirement characteristics(voluntary retirement) and satisfaction with family relationship and married life). Furthermore, health status, voluntary retirement, and satisfaction with family relationship asserted the meaningful variables in the slope of life satisfaction after retirement.

A Study of Korean Retirees' Retirement Wealth Adequacy and Its Determinants: A Comparison of between Objective Estimation Results and Subjective Recognition (우리나라 은퇴자의 은퇴자금 충분성과 영향요인: 객관적 충분성과 주관적 인지의 비교를 중심으로)

  • In this study, we compared Korean retirees' retirement wealth adequacy with their subjective recognition and examined determinants affecting the retirement wealth adequacy. The data were drawn from the 2007 Korean Retiree Survey carried out by the Korean Investors Education Foundation. The major results of this study were as follows. The analysis suggested that Korean retirees(age 50 and over) were not well prepared financially. When using their assets(except for their residence), only 23.2% had accumulated enough wealth to meet their expenses for the remainder of their life. 25.7% of retirees subjectively considered themselves to be adequately covered. The comparison results showed that 23.8% of retirees' subjective recognition was not in accord with the estimation results. One of the most troubling groups is the 12.9% of retirees who were in the inadequacy group even though they considered themselves to be in the adequacy group. Retirement wealth adequacy determinants were quite different between objective adequacy and subjective recognition. Household income and ownership of a residence have positive effects on the retirement wealth adequacy. Also, the importance of retirement planning to retirement wealth adequacy is statistically confirmed. Based on these findings, This research suggests private retirement planning and political implications for retirees and preretired households.

The Conditions of Fringe Benefits and Retirement Planning among Paid Workers (임금 근로자의 복리후생 조건과 은퇴계획 수립의 관련성)

  • The purpose of this study was to derive association between company's fringe benefits and retirement planning. The study analyzed the 2016 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA) and a total of 1,740 participants was included. To analyze the relationship between the number of the company's employee fringe benefit and the retirement planning, multiple logistic regression was conducted. As a result, we found multiple variables affecting the retirement planning including not only the number of the fringe benefits, but also the age, marital status, residence, private health insurance status, and subjective health status. Successful retirement planning for wage workers benefits not only the individuals or government, but companies also gain benefits such as improved productivity of workers and a better corporate image, so further research is needed on the effective implementation of the system, and the role of government to support this.

A Study to Classify the Type of Retirement Process among the Mature-aged in Korea - Focusing on Diversity and Inequality - (우리나라 중고령자의 은퇴과정 유형화 연구 - 다양성과 불평등 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the type of retirement process among the mature-aged in Korea. The study used the panel data from Korean Labor Panel (year2~6) for the classification of retirement process through Optimal Matching and Cluster Analysis. Classification is made in 5 categories as 'peripheral-economically active', 'private-transfer dependent', 're-entering limited', 'securely exiting', 'exit-and-reentering'. First, "peripheral-economically active" is a group which frequently experienced job status change and work insecurity. Second, "private-transfer dependent" is a group in which private transfer is likely to be supplements income in the incidence of unemployment. Third, "re-entering limited" is a group in which the proportion of no financial support combined with the absence of any economic activity is the largest. Fourth, the type "Securely exit" is th group whose members switches over to non-economically active status with pension receipt. The last type is "exit-and-reenter" that the member are highly possible to reenter in the labor market and stay in long time regardless of with or without pension plan. To examine the inequality among the types of retirement process, the duration of each status is analyzed. First, in the situation of being non-economically active, the duration of status is maintain public pension receiving and duration stabile in "securely exit" group. For "private-transfer dependent" type, members are mostly dependent on private financial support and that duration of it is longest. Through the analysis of retirement process without under other financial supports, it is "securely-exiting" type for which the duration of full-time employment is longest. It appears that the duration of part-time employment is longest in "peripheral-economically active" type. And for the case of non-waged employment it is "exit-and-reenter" type. Finally, the redistribution policy based on life course perspective is necessary to prevent that the opportunity in the structure before retirement stage and the unfavorable position in labor market make worse disadvantage in retirement process and after that.
