  • Most dynamic systems have various random properties m excitation and system parameters. In this paper, a procedure for structural response and reliability analysis is proposed for the linear dynamic system with random properties in both excitation and system parameters. The system parameter and response with random properties are modeled by the perturbation technique, and then the response analysis is formulated by probabilistic and vibration theories. Probabilistic FEM is also used for the calculation of mean response which is difficult by the proposed response model. The first passage analysis by the integral equation method is used to analyze the probability of failure. The integral equation method results in the first passage probability in terms of crossing rates and first passage probability densities. In this study it is assumed that excitations, system parameters and responses are Gaussian. As an application example, the probabilities of failure at transient state are calculated for a sdof system with random mass and spring constant subjected to stationary white-noise excitation and the results are compared to those of numerical simulation.

  • For the purpose of efficiently calculating the design sensitivity and the reliability for the complicated structures in which the structural responses or limit state functions are given by implicit form, the probabilistic finite element method is introduced to formulate the deterministic design sensitivity analysis method and incorporated with the second moment reliability methods such as MVFOSM, AFOSM and SORM. Also, the probabilistic design sensitivity analysis method needed in the reliability-based design is proposed. As numerical examples, two thin plates are analyzed for the cases of plane stress and plate bending. The initial yielding is defined as failure criterion, and applied loads, yield stress, plate thickness, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are treated as random variables. It is found that the response variances and the failure probabilities calculated by the proposed PFEM-based reliability method show good agreement with those by Monte Carlo simulation. The probabilistic design sensitivity evaluates explicitly the contribution of each random variable to probability of failure. Further, the design change can be evaluated without any difficulty, and their effect on reliability can be estimated quickly with high accuracy.

  • Applications of advanced composite material in construction field are tending upwards and development of all composite material bridges is making progress rapidly in home and abroad due to their high strength to weight ratio. This paper formulated the dynamic responses of the laminated composite structures subjected to moving load and analyzed the various dynamic behaviors using the finite element method. The nondimensionalized natural frequencies of a simply supported square-laminated composite plate are considered for verifications. Mode superposition and Newmark direct integration method are applied for moving load analysis. For structural models, dynamic magnification factor calculated for various velocities of the moving load and displacements characteristics of laminated composite structures due to the moving load are investigated theoretically Numerical results are presented to study the effects of lamination scheme, stacking sequence, and fiber angle for laminated composite structures during moving load. The various results on moving load and lamination through numerical analysis will present an important basic data for development and grasp the behavior of all composite material bridges.

  • This study is intended to develop an accurate and efficient, analytical thin-walled beam model, and to analyze overall behavior of SWATH ship under repeated overloads. SWATH ship is idealized to a simple thin-walled beam of channel type. An analytical beam model is formulated by the stress component with geometrically(fully) nonlinear thin-walled beam and treated numerically by the Finite Element Method. An efficient cyclic plasticity model is also included, suitable for material nonlinear behavior under complex loading conditions. The local stress distribution can be very exactly represented and the material yielding propagation, easily traced. In addition, the local treatment of the effect of shear deformation improves the representation of deformation and shear stress distribution along the section contour. It is desirable to use the analytical thin-walled beam at initial design stage, and is needed to improve the practical thin-walled beam model advancing the current approach.

  • In this paper, the behaviour of a cantilevered beam was predicted to examine the difference between linear and non-linear static, dynamic analysis for a structure by using CR nonlinear formulation. Then, external transverse static and dynamic loads were applied at the free tip of the beam. Classical theories were used for the present linear analysis and co-rotational dynamic FEM program was used for the present nonlinear analysis. In the static analysis, effects of the load for the beam deflection were observed in both linear and nonlinear analysis. Then, normalized displacement at the tip of the beam was predicted for different frequency ratio and a significant difference was obtained in the vicinity of the resonant frequency. In addition, effects of frequency and time for the beam deflection were investigated to find the frequency delay.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the deployable composite reflector antenna are numerically and experimentally investigated. Equations of the motion are formalized using Kane's equation by considering multibody systems with two degrees of freedom such as folding and twisting angles. To interpret structural deformations of the reflector antenna, the composite reflector is modeled using a beam model with the FSDT(First-order Shear Deformation Theory). To determine design parameters such as a torsional spring stiffness and a damping coefficient depending on deployment duration, an inverted pendulum model is simply applied. Based on the determined parameters, dynamic characteristics of the deployable reflector are investigated. In addition, its results are verified and compared through deployment tests using a gravity compensation device.

  • In design of steel column member using TMCP steels, hysteretic behavior characteristics of steel column must be clarified. To predict hysteretic behavior of steel column using TMCP steels, a cyclic plasticity model is necessary which can consider the mechanical characteristics and stress-strain relationship of TMCP steels. In this paper, a cyclic plasticity model of SM490-TMC was formulated based on monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The formulated cyclic plasticity model was applied to 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Hysteretic behavior characteristics of steel circular column and H-section column using SM490-TMC was presented by carrying out numerical analysis. Also, influence of SM490-TMC on hysteretic behavior of steel column was presented by comparing analysis results both SM490 and SM490-TMC steel column.

  • This paper utilizes computational asymptotic analysis to compute the boundary layer solution for composite beams and validates the findings through a comparison with ANSYS results. The boundary layer solution, presented as a sum of the interior solution and pure boundary layer effects, necessitates a mathematically rigorous formalization for both interior and boundary layer aspects. Computational asymptotic analysis emerges as a robust technique for addressing such problems. However, the challenge lies in connecting the boundary layer and interior solutions. In this study, we systematically separate the principles of virtual work and the principles of Saint-Venant to tackle internal and boundary layer issues. The boundary layer solution is articulated by calculating the Papkovich-Fadle eigenfunctions, representing them as linear combinations of real and imaginary vectors. To address warping functions in the interior solutions, we employed a least squares method. The computed solutions exhibit excellent agreement with 2D finite element analysis results, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This validates the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach in capturing the behavior of composite beams.

  • In this study, the details of WSA(wavelet series analysis) have been demonstrated to solve the 4th-order elliptic differential equation. It is clear to solve the 2nd-order elliptic differential equation with the basis function of Hat wavelet series that is used in the previous study existed in $H^1$-space. However, it is difficult to solve the 4th order differential equation with same basis function of Hat wavelet series because of insufficient differentiability and integrability. To overcome this problem, the linear equations in terms of moment and deflection have been formulated and solved sequentially that are similar to extension of Elastic Load Method and Moment Area Method in some senses. Also, the differences and common points between the proposed method and the meshless method are discussed in the procedure of WSA formulation. As we expect, it is easy to ascertain that the more terms of Hat wavelet series are used, the better numerical solutions are improved. Also the solutions obtained by WSA have been compared with the conventional FEM solutions in case of Euler beam problems with stress singularity.

  • For many rears, traffic accident statistics are the most direct measure of safety for a signalized intersection. However it takes more than 2 or 3 yearn to collect certain accident data for adequate sample sizes. And the accident data itself is unreliable because of the difference between accident data recorded and accident that is actually occurred. Therefore, it is rather difficult to evaluate safety for a intersection by using accident data. For these reasons, traffic conflict technique(TCT) was developed as a buick and accurate counter-measure of safety for a intersection. However, the collected conflict data is not always reliable because there is absence of clear criteria for conflict. This study developed objective and accurate conflict criteria, which is shown below based on traffic engineering theory. Frist, the rear-end conflict is regarded, when the following vehicle takes evasive maneuver against the first vehicle within a certain distance, according to car-following theory. Second, lane-change conflict is regarded when the following vehicle takes evasive maneuver against first vehicle which is changing its lane within the minimum stopping distance of the following vehicle. Third, cross and opposing-left turn conflicts are regarded when the vehicle which receives green sign takes evasive maneuver against the vehicle which lost its right-of-way crossing a intersection. As a result of correlation analysis between conflict and accident, it is verified that the suggested conflict criteria in this study ave applicable. And it is proven that estimating safety evaluation for a intersection with conflict data is possible, according to the regression analysis preformed between accident and conflict, EPDO accident and conflict. Adopting the conflict criteria suggested in this study would be both quick and accurate method for diagnosing safety and operational deficiencies and for evaluation improvements at intersections. Further research is required to refine the suggested conflict criteria to extend its application. In addition, it is necessary to develope other types of conflict criteria, not included in this study, in later study.
