The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns using inelastic finite element analysis. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage index aims to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in reinforced concrete bridge columns sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The proposed numerical method is applied to reinforced concrete bridges and compared.

A degenerated cylindrical shell element for modeling glass fiber reinforced plastic pipes is developed and its performance for static structural analysis under internal uniform pressure is evaluated. The element is a nine node degenerated solid shell element with reduced integration technique, addition of nonconforming displacement modes, and assumed strain method to improve convergence of analysis. Several numerical examples are solved and compared with analytical solutions and other F.E.M programs, The results show that the increment of fiber orientation in the GFRP pipes with reference to the longitudinal axis cause less radial displacements and much stiffness in the pipes. This is reasonable since the internal pressure will primarily cause hoop stresses in the ring and 90-angle ply GFRP ring carry these efficiently in pure tension.

In this paper, a series of finite element analyzes were carried out to evaluate the performance of the RC beams strengthened with sprayed fiber reinforced polymer(SFRP) coating. A damage constitutive model based on the micromechanical constitutive model(Lee, 2001) in conjunction with the damage models(Lee 등, 2000) for SFRP coating was implemented into the finite element code ABAQUS. The present prediction results were compared with experimental data(Ha, 2007; Ha 등, 2009) to assess the accuracy of the damage constitutive model. It was concluded from the comparative study that the computational model developed by implementing the damage constitutive model into ABAQUS is suitable for the prediction of the performance of RC beams strengthened with SFRP coating.
The finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis are both well established numerical techniques for determination of stress and displacement distributions at underground excavation. The finite element method presents antithetical advantages and limitations. Complex constitutive behaviour may be modelled, at the expense of numerical efficiency and, for infinite domain, inadequate representation of remote bounadry conditions. The inherent advantages of the boundary element method are the ease with which infinite domain problems may be analysed, and the efficiency of analysis typically associated with a boundary value solution procedure. Application of the method is limited by the requirements linear constitutive behaviour for the medium. A combined of the finite element and boundary element methods of underground analysis is shown to preserve the advantages of each procedure, and, eliminates their individual disadvantages. Procedures employed in this papers described combined FEBEM algorithm. Solutions of underground excavation verifying the performance of combined FEBEM code are compared with theoretical solution, boundary element solution and finite element solution.
This paper deals with the application of joint element in the finite element modeling of discontinuities encountered during rock tunneling. A nodal displacement joint element was implemented in a two dimensional finite element program GEOFE2D. The applicability of the joint element for modeling of discontinuities and the numerical stability of the implemented algorithm were examined by comparing the results of reduced small scale model tests as well as commercially available FEM program. The GEOFE2D was then used to analyze a tunnel crossed by a major discontinuity for the purpose of understanding the effect of discontinuity on the tunnel behavior. In addition, a modeling technique for the junction of discontinuity and shotcrete lining was presented. The results of analysis indicated that the stress-strain field around the tunnel is significantly altered by the presence of discontinuity, and that the stresses in the shotcrete lining considerably increase at the junction of the shotcrete lining and the discontinuity. It is therefore concluded that the major discontinuities must be carefully modeled in the finite element analysis of a tunneling problem in order to obtain more reliable results close to actual tunnel behavior.

In this study, computational structural dynamic analyses of a gyrocopter have been conducted considering unsteady dynamic hub-loads due to rotating blades. 3D CATIA models with detailed mechanical parts we constructed and virtually assembled into the complete aircraft configuration. The dynamic loading generated by rotating blades in the forward flight condition are calculated by a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code such as FLUENT. Modal based transient and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of the gyrocopter. Free vibration analysis results for different fuel and pilot conditions, frequency responses and transient responses for critical flight conditions are also presented in detail.
