  • SPT-Uphole tomography method was introducedand verified in this paper. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in site investigation, was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. Shear wave velocity (Vs) distribution map which has triangular shape around the boring point can be obtained by tomography inversion. The factors for obtaining reliable result of SPT-Uphole tomography are exact travel time information and accurate inversion method. To establish of the SPT-Uphole tomography procedure, the most reliable method for obtaining exact travel time information and verification of tomography inversion method were studied by using theoretical travel time information and finite element method (FEM) analysis. finally, SPT-Uphole tomography method was performed at the weathered soil site in Kimje. By comparing with several boring data including SPT-N value, feasibility of this method was verified in the field.

  • This paper proposed a novel broadband ceramic dielectric antenna by improving the conventional broadband technique that very high permittivity material is attaching to one side of low permittivity material. The broadband ceramic dielectric antenna can be designed by using our proposed method, and it overcomes the disadvantage of narrow bandwidth problem. For the proposed ceramic dielectric antenna, a 10 dB return-loss bandwidth of 33.9% has been achieved. The measurement and numerical results(Finite Element Method) are performed and confirmed to a good agreement with each other. The proposed ceramic dielectric antenna is designed and implemented to extend enough the coverage of dual band (PCS+IMT-2000).

  • Using natural electromagnetic (EM) fields at low frequencies, magnetotelluric (MT) surveys can investigate conductivity structures of the deep subsurface and thus are used to explore geothermal energy resources and investigate proper sites for not only geological $CO_2$ sequestration but also enhanced geothermal system (EGS). Moreover, marine MT data can be used for better interpretation of marine controlled-source EM data. In the interpretation of MT data, MT modeling schemes are important. This study improves a three dimensional (3D) MT modeling algorithm which uses edge finite elements. The algorithm computes magnetic fields by solving an integral form of Faraday's law of induction based on a finite difference (FD) strategy. However, the FD strategy limits the algorithm in computing vertical magnetic fields for a topographic model. The improved algorithm solves the differential form of Faraday's law of induction by making derivatives of electric fields, which are represented as a sum of basis functions multiplied by corresponding weightings. In numerical tests, vertical magnetic fields for topographic models using the improved algorithm overcome the limitation of the old algorithm. This study recomputes induction vectors and tippers for a 3D hill and valley model which were used for computation of the responses using the old algorithm.

  • response surface method (RSM) is widely used to evaluate th e extremely smal probability of ocurence or toanalyze the reliability of very complicated structures. Althoug h Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique can evaluate any system, the procesing time of MCS dependson the reciprocal num ber of the probability of failure. The stochastic finite element method could solve thislimitation. However, it is limit ed to the specific program, in which the mean and coeficient o f random variables are programed by a perturbation or by a weigh ted integral method. Therefore, it is not aplicable when erequisite programing. In a few number of stage analyses, RSM can construct a regresion model from the response of the c omplicated structural system, thus, saving time and efort significantly. However, the acuracy of RSM depends on the dist ance of the axial points and on the linearity of the limit stat e functions. To improve the convergence in exact solution regardl es of the linearity limit of state functions, an improved adaptive response surface method is developed. The analyzed res ults have ben verified using linear and quadratic forms of response surface functions in two examples. As a result, the be st combination of the improved RSM techniques is determined and programed in a numerical code. The developed linear adapti ve weighted response surface method (LAW-RSM) shows the closest converged reliability indices, compared with quadratic form or non-adaptive or non-weighted RSMs.

  • Finite element (FE) model updating is a procedure to minimize the differences between analytical and experimental results, which can be usually posed as an optimization problem. This paper aims to introduce a hybrid optimization algorithm (GA-SA), which consists of a Genetic algorithm (GA) stage and an Adaptive Simulated Annealing (ASA) stage, to FE model updating for a shrunk shaft. A good agreement of the first four natural frequencies has been achieved obtained from GASA based updated model (FEgasa) and experiment. In order to prove the validity of GA-SA, comparisons of natural frequencies obtained from the initial FE model (FEinit), GA based updated model (FEga) and ASA based updated model (FEasa) are carried out. Simultaneously, the FRF comparisons obtained from different FE models and experiment are also shown. It is concluded that the GA, ASA, GA-SA are powerful optimization techniques which can be successfully applied to FE model updating, the natural frequencies and FRF obtained from all the updated models show much better agreement with experiment than that obtained from FEinit model. However, FEgasa is proved to be the most reasonable FE model, and also FEasa model is better than FEga model.

  • In this paper, nonlinear transonic flutter analyses of a composite missile fin considering the effect of delamination are conducted. An effective modal analysis methodology is adopted and verified with the experimental modal test data for laminated composite plates with delamination. Extended version of the in-house computational aeroelastic analysis program with the transonic small-disturbance (TSD) code is used in order to predict the flutter dynamic pressure of the delaminated composite fin models. In the subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flow regions, nonlinear time-domain flutter analyses are performed for various delamination conditions, and aeroelastic characteristics due to the delamination phenomena are examined in detail.

  • The mega frame system is becoming popular for the design and construction of skyscrapers because this system exhibits structural efficiency by allowing high rigidity of the structure while minimizing the amount of structural materials to be used. Since the mega frame system is usually adopted for super high-rise buildings, the comfort of occupants may be main concerns in the practical application of this system. For the enhancement of the serviceability of mega frame structures, a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) is developed in this study. To this end, a Magnetorheological (MR) damper is employed replacing passive damper as a semi-active damper to improve the control effect of a conventional TMD. Since a conventional finite element model of mega frame structures has significant numbers of DOFs, numerical simulation for investigation of control performances of a STMD is impossible by using the full-order model. Therefore, a reduced-order system using minimal DOFs, which can accurately represent the dynamic behavior of a mega frame structure, is proposed in this study through the matrix condensation technique To improve the efficiency of the matrix condensation technique, multi-level matrix condensation technique is proposed using the structural characteristics of mega frame structures. The efficiency and accuracy of the reduced-order control proposed in this study and the control performance of a STMD were verified using example structures.

  • In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a 12m plate girder railway bridge is analyzed using the commercial FEM program. A time history load is applied to a standard train load via the shape function ofthe beam element. In addition, lateral behavior characteristics were simulated using the Klingel sine movement. A feasibility study of the FEM program and an analysis were performed by comparing the displacement and the acceleration, from the experimental data and the results of the FEM analysis. the time history of the lateral and vertical displacements are reflected in the experimental results. Six kinds of reinforcements were studied from the effects of the displacement and the acceleration. The RF-1 model that was applied to the upper lateral bracing system, and the RF-3 model that reinforced the plate, turned out to be the most effective reinforcement methods with respect to weight limits and construction simplification.

  • This paper investigates the effect of the rotational motion of a driving fluid generated by a rotational motion device at the inlet of a driving nozzle for a gas-liquid ejector, which is the main device used for ozonated ship ballast water treatment. An experimental apparatus was constructed to study the pressure and suction flow rate of each port of the ejector according to the back pressure. Experimental data were acquired for the ejector without rotational motion. Based on the data, a finite element model was then developed. The rotational motion of the driving fluid could improve the suction efficiency of the ejector based on the CFD model. Based on the CFD results, structure optimization was performed for the internal shape of the rotation induction device to increase the suction flow rate of the ejector, which was performed using the kriging technique and a metamodel. The optimized rotation induction device improved the ejector efficiency by about 3% compared to an ejector without rotational motion of the driving fluid.

  • Since the sides of a vehicle are designed asymmetrically unlike its front or rear, the degree of deformation of the car body greatly differs depending on the site of collision if a broadside collision takes place. When elastic deformation and plastic deformation occur in the car body occur due to a collision, the kinetic energy is absorbed into the body, and the momentum decreases. Generally, an analysis of traffic accidents analyzes the vehicle's behavior after a collision by the law of momentum conservation and corrects the error of the amount of energy absorption due to the deformation of the car body, applying a restitution coefficient. This study interpreted a finite element vehicle model applying the structure of the car body and the material properties of each part with LS-DYNA, analyzed the result and drew the restitution coefficient and the depth of penetration according to the contact area of the vehicle in a broadside collision between an SUV and a passenger car. When the finally calculated restitution coefficient and depth of penetration were applied to the examples of the actual traffic accidents, there was an effect on the improvement of the error in the result. It was found that when the initial input value, drawn using the finite element analysis model, it had a higher reliability of the interpretation than that of the existing analysis techniques.
