Tides at both of northern and southern entrances of Kamag Bay were compared by deploying tide gauges for 18 days during July-August 1994. To examine the response of the inner bay to the tidal waves through both entrances, a current meter was moored at the eastern pan of the inner bay. Current meter mooring failed at the northern entrance (Yosu) while the current data was collected for only 5 days at the southern site (Songdo). Maximum range was 357 and 352 cm at Yosu and Songdo, respectively. Respective amplitudes for M2, S2 Kl O1 tides of 95.5, 48.8, 20.5, 14.0cm at Yosu and 93.6, 47.2, 21.3, 13.1cm at Songdo yielded the form numbers of 0.23 and 0.24, respectively, both of which belong to the predominantly semidiurnal tide, Contributions from the overtides and compound tides were less than $4\%^ at both sites. Differences in Greenwich phase of major partial tides between two sites were negligible. Maximum speed of tidal current was about 100cm/sec at the southern entrance and about 40cm/sec at the inner bay. Residual current speed was 17cm/sec southwestward at the southern entrance and 0.9cm/sec southeastward at the inner bay. Temporal change in current at the inner bay showed that the wind had a significant influence upon the circulation in Kamag Bay.
As a part of improving the quality for the fraction of the waste plastics pyrolysis oil (WPPO), the recovery of paraffin components contained in the fraction was investigated by dimethylformamide (DMF) equilibrium extraction. The fraction of a distilling temperature of $120{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ recovered from WPPO by the simple distillation and the aqueous solution of DMF were used as a raw material and solvent, respectively. The concentrations of paraffin components ($C_{12}$, $C_{14}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{18}$) contained in the raffinate decreased by increasing the mass fraction of water in the solvent at an initial state ($y_{w,0}$), whereas, the concentrations of paraffin components contained in the raffinate increased by increasing the mass ratio of the solvent to the feed at an initial state $(S/F)_0$. The concentrations of $C_{12}$, $C_{14}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{18}$ paraffin components present in the raffinate recovered at $(S/F)_0=10$ were about 1.37, 2.0, 2.46 and 3.16 times higher than those of the raw materials, respectively. Recovery rates (residue rates present in raffinate) of paraffin components rapidly increased with increasing $y_{w,0}$, and decreasing $(S/F)_0$. The raffinate recovered through this study was expected to be used as a renewable energy.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate residues of environmentally concerned pesticides in water system, this monitoring was conducted over three rivers. The residual characteristics and discharging condition of these residues on water system was investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Total twenty nine sampling sites were selected through main streams and branch streams of Keum, Mangyung and Dongjin rivers, and the water samples from them were regularly collected one month interval, especially biweekly from May to August in 2002. Of the pesticides monitored, six fungicides which include hexaconazole, isoprothiolane and iprobenfos were detected with frequencies of 0.3-50.9% and in their residue level of $0.1-4.7{\mu}g/L$. Sixteen insecticides which include nine organophosphoruses, three carbamates, endosulfan, cypermethrin, buprofezin and fipronil were detected with frequencies of 0.3-32.5% and in their residue level of $0.01-2.8{\mu}g/L$. Nine herbicides which include alachlor molinate, anilofos, butachlor, dimepiperate, metolachlor, oxadiazon, pretilachlor and thiobencarb were detected with frequencies of 0.8-22.9% and in their residue level of $0.01-9.07{\mu}g/L$. CONCLUSION: Detection frequencies and residue levels of insecticides and herbicides were the highest in waters sampled in May and June. Almost pesticides detected were for the paddy rice and their residue levels were very low to compare with standard values.

In Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR), the removal efficiencies if nutrient materials such as nitrogen and phosphate depend highly on quantity and quality of organic carbon source. Food waste thai contains abundant organic materials has been produced in ship. The applicability if anaerobically fermented if food waste (AFFW) as an external carbon source was examined in the lab-scale SBR process operated at $25^{\circ}C$. With the addition if AFFW increased, average removal efficiencies if $COD_cr$, T-N, T-P changed to $98.5\%,\;95\%,\;93\%$, respectively. Denitrification rate is 0.30g $NO_3-N/g\;VSS{\cdot}day$. In summary, it was suggested tint AFFW sould be used as an economical and effective carbon source for the biological nitrogen and phosphate removal.

For the establishment of effective water resources management platform for Jeju-Island, the characteristics, including surface runoff, evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge and discharge are to be properly quantified. Among these hydrologic components, interception due to vegetation is very important factor but it is hard to be quantified. After Von Hoyningen-Huene (1981) found the relationship between LAI (Leaf Area Index) and interception storage, LAI has been used for key factor to estimate interception and transpiration. In this study the equation suggested by Kozak et al. (2007) is implemented in SWAT-K (Soil and Water Assessment Tool - Korea) model and is tested at the Cheonmicheon watershed in Jeju-Island. The evaporation due to interception was estimated as 85~104mm, 8~11% of whole evaporation. Therefore it is necessary to consider the evaporation due to interception as a controlling factor to water budget of this watershed.
Hydrological models simulate the land phase components of the water cycle and provide a mechanism for evaluating the effects of climatic variation and change on water resources. Evapotranspiration(ET) is a critical process within hydrological models. This study evaluates five different methods for estimating ET in the SLURP(Semi-distributed Land Use Runoff Process)model, in the Yongdam basin. The five ET methods were the FAO Penman-Monteith, Morton CRAE (Complementary Relationship Area Evapotranspiration), the Spittlehouse-Black, the Granger, the Linacre model. We evaluated the five ET models, based on the ability of SLURP model to simulate daily streamflow, and How the five ET methods influence the sensitivity of simulated streamflow to changes in key model parameters and validation SLURP independently for each ET methods. The results showed that the Merton CRAE model had more physical significance and gave better agreement simulated stream flow and recorded flows. It noted that the Morton CRAE model might be more appropriate for the simulation of the actual evapotranspiration in SLURP hydrologic model.
Optimal thawing conditions of frozen model foods containing protein and starch were nvestigated at various thawing conditions such as room temperature, hot air, and microwave heating. Hardness of the frozen model foods was getting higher as the water content increased. Thawing rates at room temperature, hot-air heating at $50^{\circ}C$, and microwave heating were 0.02 Kg/min, 0.08 Kg/min, 0.01 Kg/min, respectively. Final thawing time was as follows; control 60min, 5% sucrose: 50 min, 10% sucrose: 30 min, 5% NaCl: 30 min. Total drip loss was as follows; room temperature thawing: 22.5%, 200W microwave thawing 1.3%, and $50^{\circ}C$ hot air thawing nearly negligible.

This study was conducted to find end-members and tracers which are effective to be applied in the End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA) model for runoff separation at the Gwangneung coniferous forest catchment (13.6ha), Gyeonggido, Korea. We monitored three successive rainfall events during two weeks from June 26, 2005 to July 10, 2005, and analysed chemical properties of rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, groundwater and soil water considered as main components of storm runoff. The followings are the results of analyses of each component and tracer. Groundwater, soil water and rainfall (or throughfall) were dominant runoff components. Rainfall and groundwater were selected as main components for the two components-one tracer mixing model, and groundwater, soilwater and throughfall were selected as main components for the three components-two tracers mixing model. Tracers were selected from anion ($Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$), cation ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$) and Acid Neutralizing Capacity (ANC) in event 1, 2, and 3. $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and ANC were selected in the two components-one tracer mixing model and ${SO_4}^{2-}-K^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Na^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}-Ca^{2+}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$-ANC, and $Ca^{2+}$-ANC were selected in the three components-two tracers mixing model. Selected main runoff components and tracers can provide basic information to determine the contribution rate of each runoff component and identify the runoff process in a forest watershed.
Climatic water balance has been applied to obtain quantity of various hydrologic components. Hydrologic information is estimated by comparison between rainfall and evapotranspiration under complex terrain condition. Water deficit is defined as that subtraction of actual supply from climatic demand. The water deficit will occur, when monthly evapotranspiration exceed monthly rainfall. Contrary water surplus is defined as that surplus water after meeting the demand by plants. The water surplus will be occurred when monthly rainfall exceeds monthly evapotranspiration. Finally, the discrete moisture indices were calculated and mapped for the whole watershed to estimate dryness and wetness status using the climatic water balance approach. The result of this study can properly interpret the real drought and non drought. Based upon the results, it can be concluded that the climatic water balance model is useful to monitor water conditions for the watershed.
In Korea, groundwater management has been conducted based on the estimation of annual average of groundwater recharge. Since groundwater recharge and surface water-groundwater interactions show spatiotemporal variation, continuous monitoring and dynamic analysis must be carried out to evaluate the sustainability of groundwater resources. In this study, SWAT-MODFLOW, an integrated surface water-groundwater model was used to analyze surface-groundwater interactions for various groundwater pumping scenarios in Musimcheon watershed. When current usage is applied, the baseflow reduction is about 16%, and annual averaged storage reduction is about 27 mm for whole watershed. As a holistic approach to groundwater sustainability considers the hydrological, ecological, socioeconomic, technological aspects of groundwater utilization, the exploitable groundwater should be determined by physical analysis as well as social compromise in a community.
