  • In this study, we performed a numerical study of hydrogen/air combustion in the combustion chamber of an ultra micro gas turbine. The supply flow rate and equivalence ratio are used as variables, and the commercial computational fluid dynamic program (STAR-CCM) is used for the numerical study of the combustion. The flow rate significantly affects the flame position, flame temperature, and pressure ratio between the inlet and the outlet. The flame position is close to the outlet in the combustion chamber, and the flame temperature and pressure ratio monotonously increases with the supply flow rate. The change in the equivalence ratio does not affect the flame position. The maximum flame temperature occurs under stoichiometric conditions.

  • Flow instability in the rocket turbo pump systems can be caused by various elements such as valve, orifice and venturi and etc. The formation of cavitation specially in the propellant feeding system can trigger the mass flow and pressure oscillation due to cyclic formation and depletion of cavitations. If the cryogenic propellant are used, which is very sensitive to temperature variation, the change of propellant properties due to thermodynamic effect should be accounted for in the flow analysis. This study focuses on the formation of cryogenic cavitation adopting MUSHY IDM model suggested by Shyy and coworkers. Also, the flow instability is investigated with developed numerical code in the downstream of orifice flow. To this end, three different orifices are selected and investigated by the numerical calculation.

  • In this study, the training and sporting equipment for leg rehabilitation featuring the MR fluids is proposed. The compact MR fluid brake is designed and manufactured to apply to the rehabilitation training and sporting mechanism. The resistance characteristic of the MR fluid brake is controllable by varying the magnetic field around the fluid. Under consideration of spatial limitation, design parameters which are related with the magnetic strength are determined to maximize to a torque using finite element method. The FE analysis is performed using a commercial code, ANSYS Workbench. The proposed brake device is manufactured, and its field-dependant torque is experimentally evaluated. When the electric current is supplied, the torque of the MR fluid brake is increased and the response is very fast. Depending on the strength of the current supply, torques of the MR fluid brake also increase similar to Bingham property of MR fluid.

  • This article is related to the possibility for continuous operation of a liquid rocket engine when a portion of cryogenic propellant in the pipeline is vaporized. As a result of experimental studies imitating the formation of vapors in the flow, we confirmed the possibility of full gas-phase condensation in case temperature of cryogenic liquid is lower than it's saturation temperature in the pipeline. Empirical equation allowing to calculate a nonequilibrium condensation region in the steady flow of cryogenic liquid was obtained as a non-dimensional form and the fields of practical application were suggested.

  • In the present study, several different types of PSD performance test systems were reviewed. Basically there are two methods to pulsate the system; whole-feeding-system pulsation and working-fluid pulsation. The latter method adopts either a piston-type pulsator or a restrict-type pulsator The working-fluid pulsation using a restrict-type pulsator was considered to be the most appropriate experimental system to study the effects of the primary parameters, and a practical design of the system was proposed.

  • We propose an electroosmosis-based air delivery scheme for polymer electrolyte fuel cells and experimentally investigate its feasibility. An electroosmotic pump under a low-frequency AC electric field is used to displace initially a volume of pump working liquids. This working liquid is then pumped into a space enclosed by a flexible membrane and the movement of the membrane delivers air to a fuel cell. We successfully demonstrated the operation of a forced-convection fuel cell using this technique. In this preliminary study, however, the power consumption of the pump exceeds the power generated by the fuel cell. We conclude this paper with a discussion of several ways to reduce the pump-to-fuel cell power ratio.

  • The design method to calculate the main features of propellant tank pressurization system during the development procedure of propellant feed system of the liquid rocket engine was suggested. We have considered the influences of parameters of pressurization gas on the efficiency of the thermodynamic processes in the tank. The optimum value of temperature and velocity of pressurization gas at the entrance of tank are obtained by the suggested way.

  • In the present experimental study, the liquid pool fire extinguishment performance of twin-fluid nozzle was preliminarily examined. For the liquid pool fire, the ethanol of 1200 ml (volume) was prepared, and two kinds of air flow rate conditions (40 l/min and 70 l/min) were tested at the constant water flow rate condition of 632 ml/min. In the present experimental ranges, the fire extinguishment experiments were carried out using the twin-fluid nozzle and its spray characteristics (i.e., SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter) and flow distribution) were investigated. As a result, at the higher air flow rate, the liquid pool fire was extinguished quickly and successfully, which was discussed using the visualization and spray characteristics of twin-fluid nozzle. In addition, through the comparison with some of previous results, it was found that potentially, the twin-fluid nozzle can extinguish the liquid pool fire under the smaller water flow rate condition, as compared with the single-fluid nozzle.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an intermittent aeration mode to reduce the membrane fouling in a submerged membrane process using the specifically devised module (YEF 750D-2). The fluid velocity on the module increased with increasing the supplied air volume, and decreased with the increment of MLSS in the biological reactor. The reduction rate of the fluid velocity was found to be $3\times10^{-4}m{\cdot}min/sec{\cdot}L$ per 1,000 mg MLSS/L increased. In the operation of the intermittent aeration, the intermitted stop of the aeration provoked the formation of a cake layer on the gel layer which was previously formed during the aeration, resulting in the highly increased TMP level. However, the TMP level could be significantly lowered by the subsequent backwashing and aeration that effectively removed the cake along with the gel layer on the membrane surface. In this study, the optimum condition for the intermittent aeration was determined to be aeration for 20 sec and pause for 20 sec.
