  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling of tailings from the sangdong tungsten mine as powder (TA) of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The experimental tests for entrapped water ratio were carried out in accordance with the specified method by Okamura. The rheological measurements of cement paste were conducted by using a commercially digital Brookfield viscometer (Model LVDV-II+) equipped with cylindrical spindles, also tests for slump-flow, time required to reach 500 mm of slump flow (sec), time required to flow through V-funnel (sec) and filling height of U-box test (mm) were carried out in accordance with the specified by the Japanese Society of Civil Engineering (JSCE). The results of this study, entrapped water ratio was decreased with increasing replacement of TA. Thickness of pseudo water film was increased, and mean plastic viscosity was decreased with increasing replacement of TA. And slump-flow of SCC was decreased with increasing replacement of TA. But time required to reach 500 mm of slump flow (sec), time required to flow through V-funnel (sec) and filling height of U-box test (mm) were satisfied a prescribed range. The mechanical properties including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus were checked with the requirements specified by Korean Industrial Standard (KS). The compressive strength of SCC was decreased with increasing replacement of TA, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus were similar to those of normal concrete.

  • Liquid ramjet combustor is closely connected with complex phenomena due to a series of processes such as intake air, spray, mixing, and combustion. The present numerical experiments were peformed to investigate these flow characteristics for two and three dimensional liquid ramjet combustor. Grid system was made with three domains: intake region where air is supplied and fuel is injected, combustor and nozzle region, and exit atmosphere region. The numerical results showed that two and three dimensional flow patterns in recirculation region of combustor were significantly different each other and spray model was necessary to predict correctly the chemical reaction flow characteristics. Numerically examined for two different location of fuel injector, one is located on the bottom position of curved intake and the other is located on the top position. We found that bottom position of fuel injector is better than top position because fuel influx to the recirculation region which is need to sustain chemical reaction is more than the latter.

  • Numerical analysis and measurements of the velocity and temperature distributions in buoyancy assisting laminar mixed convection flow over a vertically located, two-dimensional backward-facing step are reported. Laser-Doppler Velocimeter and Constant Temperature Anemometer operated in constant current were used to measure simultaneously the velocity and temperature distributions in the recirculation region downstream of the step. The reattachment length was measured by using flow visualization technique for different inlet velocities, wall temperatures and step heights. While the reattachment length $X_r$ increases as the inlet velocity or step height increase, it decreases as the buoyancy force increases, causing the size of the recirculation region to decrease. For the experimental range of $Gr_s$/$Re_{s}^{2}$$\times$$10^3$<17, a correlation equation for the reattachment length can be given by $X_{r}=1.05(2.13+0.021 Re_{s})exp$ $(-33.7_s^{-0.186}/Gr_{s}/Re_{s}^2).$ The Nusselt number is found to increase and the location of its maximum value moves closer to the step as the buoyancy force increases. The location of the maximum Nusselt number occurs downstream of the reattachment point, and distance between the reattachment point and the location of the maximum Nusselt mumber increases as the buoyancy force increases. Computational prediction agrees favorably well with measured results.

  • The effects of swirl and combustion parameters on the performance and emission in a turbo-charged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L were studied experimentally in this paper. Generally the swirl in the combustion process of diesel engine promotes mixing of the injection fuel and the intake air. It is a major factor to improve the engine performance because the fuel consumption and NO$_{x}$ is trade-off according to the high temperature and high pressure of combustion gas in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine, it's necessary to thinking over the intake and exhaust system, the design of combustion bowl and so on. In order to choose a turbocharger of appropriate capacity. As a result of steady flow test, when the swirl ratio is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreased, whereas the gulf factor is increased. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emissions by optimizing the main parameter's; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13$^{\circ}$ CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.

  • A sediment transport calculation considering cohesive force is proposed to deal with the transport phenomena of cohesive sediment. In the proposed calculation, each sand particle is assumed to be surrounded by a thin layer of mud. The critical Shields parameter and bed-load sediment transport rate are modified to include the cohesive force acting on the sand particle. The proposed calculation is incorporated into a two-way coupled fluid-structure-sediment interaction model, and applied to wave-induced topographic change of artificial shallows. Numerical results show that an increase in the content ratio of the mud, cohesive resistance force per unit surface area and water content cause increases in the critical Shields parameter and decreases in the bed-load sediment transport rate, reducing the topographic change of the shallow without changing its trend. This suggests that mixing mud in the pores of the sand particles can reduce the topographic change of shallows.

  • A two color PIV technique has been developed for visualization of complex and high speed flow in a ramjet combustor. Two color PIV has the advantages that velocity distribytions in high speed flowfields can be measured simply by varying the time interval between two different laser beams and a directional ambiguity problem can be solved by color separation, and then a singnal-to-noise ratio can be increased through nearly perfect cross-correlation. As a basic research of the ramjet engine, a 2-D shaped combustor with two symmetric air intakes has been manufactured and an experimental study has been conducted using a two color PIV technique. The flow characteristics such as recirculation zones and two intake air mixing have been investigated varying inlet angles and dome heights. It is found that the size and air mass ratio of reciculation zones are affected mainly by an inlet angle, but not much by a dome height.

  • Turbulent flow and combustion characteristics in a micro can combustor with a baffle plate are investigated by a Reynolds Stress Model. In order to examine the geometric effects on the turbulent combusting flow, several baffle configurations are selected. The interrelation between the flow structure and the thermal field are investigated by examing the variation of recirculation region, flame length and heat loss. For the flow mixing, the decreasing air hole is more efficient than the decrease of the fuel hole. As the fuel or air hole diameter decreases, combustion efficiency is enhanced and flame length is decreased. Additionally, as the diameter of air hole decreases, the heat loss and combustion temperature are increased, while they are reduced with decreasing the diameter of fuel hole.

  • this paper the acoustic signature from a supersonic nozzle is measured and compared to the result of a program developed for a gas turbine noise prediction. In order to measure the jet Mach Number, the pressure and temperature at the settling chamber was measured along with pressures from a pitot-tube placed near the exit. The results are also compared to the ones obtained with a shadow graph technique. Jet noise produced by an imperfectly expanded jet contains shock associated noise, which consist of broadband noise and screech tone noise. For subsonic condition, the directivity is dominant to the downstream direction due to turbulence mixing noise. For supersonic conditions, however, the directivity is dominant toward upstream direction due to shock associated noise. The comparison with a jet exhaust noise prediction code shows good agreement at supersonic conditions but needs to be improved at subsonic speeds.

  • The physical characteristics of autonomic microcapsules manufactured with various agitation speeds in a stirred tank were observed experimentally by a particle size analyzer and an optical microscope. The flow characteristics in a stirred tank were also investigated through a 3-dimensional numerical simulation to understand the manufacturing process of autonomic microcapsules. According to the results, we found that the agitation speed was the important factor to determine the sizes of microcapsules. The impeller-induced flow allowed the jet and tip-vortex pair components in the mixed fluid of a stirred tank. The vorticity around the blades in the impeller was increased as increasing the agitation speed. In addition, the size of autonomic microcapsules was strongly affected on the small scale mixing pattern such as a tip-vortex pair.

  • Large eddy simulation (LES) of a partially premixed gas turbine combustor is conducted. Four different hydrogen compositions are considered to investigate the fuel composition effects on the flow field inside the combustor. The comparison with the experimental flame structure and velocity profile is conducted to verify the LES results, revealing that the partially premixed flame structure is altered when hydrogen composition is changed. The flame structure becomes shorter and thicker as the hydrogen composition is increased, and therefore, the flame effect in the rigid wall is minimized. The change in the recirculation zone at the combustor wall with hydrogen addition is further investigated. Overall, the LES with combustion model is quite promising for accurately predicting the reactive flow characteristics in connection with the fuel composition.
