  • The lifting-line method based on Weissinger's method is extended to be able to analyze the ground effect. The method is applied to predict the variation of aerodynamic performance due to ground effect for the elliptic wing with aspect ratio of 10 and the wing of human powered aircraft. While the vortex strength of the wing increases slightly, the downwash decreases significantly as the wing approaches to the ground. For the wing of human powered aircraft, the increment of lift at the height of 2m is 5% than the lift outside the influence of ground effect. The decrease of induced drag at the height of wing span is 10% and at the height of 2m is 55% than that out of ground effect.

  • In this study, numerical simulations were performed for steady and unsteady state characteristics of length effects on linear pintle nozzles using the overset grid method. Nozzles and pintles are created separately by an auto grid generation program to use the overset grid method. Appropriate turbulent models and numerical methods are selected for the validation of simulations. Pintle shapes are chosen from five types, with differences in the ratio of length and diameter. The longer the pintle length, the greater the thrust and thrust coefficient. The chamber pressure tendency of steady-state and unsteady-state are different for various pintle velocities. The thrust of the nozzle exit responds to changes in the nozzle throat in the unsteady-state, and the speed of pressure propagation wave generated by movement of the pintle is considered to predict the major factor of performance.

  • This paper deals with the analytic and FEM analyses of sloshing frequency response of incompressible, invicid and irrotational flow in two dimensional rectangular tank. We use Laplace equation based on potential theory as governing equation. For small amplitude sloshing motion, the linearized free surface condition was applied and the analytic solution as obtained by the separation of variables. To simulate the effect of the energy dissipation due to viscous damping, artificial viscous coefficient is introduced and the divergence of response at resonance frequencies may be avoided by this coefficient. This problem was solved by FEM using 9-node elements in order to predict the maximum amplitude of sloshing response. Numerical results of free surface height, fluid pressure and fluid force show good agreement with those by analytic solution. After verifying the test FEM program, we analyze the frequency response characteristics of sloshing to the fluid height.

  • In this study, numerical simulations on the effects of bilge keel on roll motion were conducted. The numerical simulations were performed on a 110 m class PSV using the commercial viscous flow analysis software Star-CCM+. Before conducting the study on the 110 m class PSV, an additional simulation of DTMB 5512 was performed and compared with the experimental results to validate the feasibility of the numerical simulation. In the simulation on PSV, a nondimensional damping coefficient was calculated using a free roll decay simulation, and the response amplitude operator (RAO) for the roll motion was calculated with a nondimensional damping coefficient at two conditions (with/without bilge keel).

  • Aspect-ratio-based numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchangers with circular tubes and flat tubes-plate fins. The RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is adopted for turbulence analysis. The numerical analysis is carried out for aspect ratios ranging from 3.06 to 5.44 and for Reynolds numbers ranging from 1,000 to 10,000. The calculated results indicate a correlation between the friction factor and Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system for the range of aspect ratios under consideration. The results obtained for circular tubes and flat tubes-plate fins in this study can be utilized to realize the optimal design of an air conditioning system.

  • In order to improve the heat efficiency of the general residential boiler, we performed an experiment of condensation heat transfer to air pre-heating exchanger adhered to the condensing boiler. In this study, surface roughness was imposed on the surface of stainless steel by etching. And in order to evaluate the heat transfer performance on each plate, the counter flow heat exchanger fabricated with polycarbonate in used. As a result, on etching treated plate's overall heat transfer coefficient is higher than the original plate. And etching treated plate during 60 seconds with etchant is the to average 15% compared to bare stainless steel. And we studied the heat transfer enhancement factor through the analysis of surface characteristics using AFM.

  • Comparison of the classical mobile-immobile zone (MIM) model to the derived model led to several conclusions. If the MIM model is to be applied, the initial concentration in the immobile zone has to be down-scaled by a correction factor that is a function of pore geometry. The MIM model was valid only after sufficiently long time has passed, i.e., only after the diffusion front reaches the deepest pore wall in the immobile zone. The MIM mass-transfer coefficient $\alpha$, was inversely proportional to the square of the pore depth. Also it did not depend on the mobile-zone flow velocity, contrary to the number of laboratory and field observations. The classical MIM model displayed a rapid exponential decay of immobile-zone concentration. Meanwhile at large times, the newly derived model displayed similar exponential decay. This was contrary to the mounting evidence of power-law BTC tails observed in laboratory and field settings.

  • Aircraft fuel efficiency is one of main concerns to aircraft manufacturers and to aviation companies because jet fuel price has tripled in last ten years. One of simple and effective methods to increase fuel efficiency is to reduce aircraft induced drag by using of wingtip devices. Induced drag is closely related to the circulation distribution, which produces strong wingtip vortex behind the tip of a finite wing. Wingtip devices including winglets can be successfully applied to reduce induced drag by wingtip vortex mitigation. Winglet design, however, is very complicated process and has to consider many parameters including installation position, height, taper ratio, sweepback, airfoil, toe-out angle and cant angle of winglets. In current research, different shapes of winglets are compared in the view of vortex mitigation. Appropriately designed winglets are proved to mitigate wingtip vortex and to increase lift to drag ratio. Also, the results show that winglets are more efficient than wingtip extension. That is the reason B-747-400 and B-737-800 chose winglets instead of a span increase to increase payload and range. Drag polar comparison chart is presented to show that minimum drag is increased by viscous drag of winglet, but at high lift, total drag is reduced by induced drag decrease. So, winglets are more efficient for aircraft that cruises at a high lift condition, which generates very strong wingtip vortex.

  • The source and source/dipole distribution methods using 3-dimensional panel method have been widely used for ship motion analysis. When these methods are used, large errors in the predicted hydrodynamic coefficients are introduced around the irregular frequencies caused by the resonance of imaginary internal flow. Therefore, the irregular frequencies need to be removed for an accurate prediction of ship motion. This paper adopts 3-dimensional translating and oscillating Green function derived by Wu. The adaptive integration method, stretching transform and stationary phase method are used for the calculation of the calculation of Green function and the integral equation is derived by distributing the Green function n ship surface and inner free-surface. The condition of zero normal velocity, that is, wall condition on inner free-surface has been successfully used for the removal of irregular frequencies in oscillating problems. The calculations are carried out for series 60($C_B=0.7$) vessel and the results are compared with those of other theoretical analyses and experiment.

  • A numerical simulation on the wake flow of a wind turbine which is a scaled version of a multi-megawatt wind turbine has been performed. Two different inlet conditions of averaged wind speed including one below and one above the rated wind speed were used in the simulation. Steady-state pitch angles of the blade associated with the two averaged wind speeds were imposed for the simulation. The steady state analysis based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the method of frame motion were used for the simulation to find the torque of the rotor and the wake field behind the wind turbine. The simulation results were compared with the results obtained from the wind tunnel testing. From comparisons, it was found that the simulation results on the turbine power are pretty close to the experimental values. Also, the wake results were relatively close to the experimental results but there existed some discrepancy in the shape of velocity deficit. The reason for the discrepancy is considered due to the steady state solution with the frame motion method used in the simulation. However, the method is considered useful for solutions with much reduced calculation time and reasonably good accuracy compared to the transient analysis.
