  • A custom micro-PIV optics assembly has been used to measure the flow fold inside a T-junction of a microchannel. The micro-PIV system consists of microscope objectives of various magnifications, a dichroic cube, and an 8-bit CCD camera. Fluorescent particles of diameters 620 nm have been used with a Nd:YAG laser and color filters. A programmable syringe pump with Teflon tubings were used to inject particle-seeded distilled water into the channel at flow rates of 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 mL/hr. The micro-channels are fabricated with PDMS with a silicon mold, then O$_{2}$ -ion bonded onto a slide glass. Results show differences in flow characteristics and resolution according to fluid injection rates, and magnifications, respectively. The results include PIV data with vector-to-vector distances of 2 $\mu$m with 32 pixel-square interrogation windows at 50$\%$ overlap.

  • A kinetic theory analysis is made of low-speed gas flows in microchannels. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. The method does not suffer from statistical noise which is common in particle based methods and requires much less amount of computational effort. Calculations are made for flows in simple microchannels and a microfluidic system consisting of two microchannels in series. The method is assessed by comparing the results with those from several different methods and available experimental data.

  • Microfluidic chips such as lab-on-a-chip (LOC) include micro-channels for sample delivery, mixing, reaction, and separation. Pressure driven flow or electro-osmotic flow (EOF) has been usually employed to deliver bio-samples. Having some advantages of easy control, the flow characteristics of EOF in microchannels should be fully understood to effectively control the electro-osmotic pump for bio-sam-pie delivery. In this study, a micro PIV system with an epifluorescence inverted microscope and a cooled CCD was used to measure velocity fields of EOF in a glass microchannel and a PDMS microchannel. The EOF velocity fields were changed with respect to electric charge of seeding particles and microchannel materials used. The EOF has nearly uniform velocity distribution inside the microchannel when pressure gradient effect is negligible. The mean streamwise velocity is nearly proportional to the applied electric field. Glass microchannels give better repeatability in PIV results, compared with PDMS microchannels which are easy to fabricate and more suitable for PIV experiments.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study two-phase pressure drop of deionized water in a microchannel. Measurement and evaluation of two-phase frictional pressure gradient were carried out using a single horizontal rectangular microchanne1 having a hydraulic diameter of $100{\mu}m$. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 90, 169, and 267 $kg/m^2$s and heat fluxes of 200-700 $kW/m^2$. Test results showed that the measured two-phase frictional pressure gradient increased with the mass flux and vapor quality. Most macro-channel correlations of two-phase frictional pressure gradient did not provide reliable predictions except under certain limited conditions.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study flow boiling heat transfer of deionized water in a microchannel. Measurement and evaluation of boiling heat transfer coefficients were carried out using a single horizontal rectangular microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $100{\mu}m$. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 90, 169 and 267 $kg/m^2$s and heat fluxes of 200-700 $kW/m^2$. Test results showed that the measured boiling heat transfer coefficients had no dependence on mass flux and vapor quality. Most macro-channel correlations of boiling heat transfer coefficient did not provide reliable predictions.

  • The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of $CO_{2}$ are substantially different from those for CFC and HCFC refrigerants. In addition, geometric effects on two-phase flow patterns of $CO_{2}$ are also very significant in many respects. Therefore, two-phase flow patterns of $CO_{2}$ in a narrow rectangular channel or a small diameter tube whose gap size or hydraulic diameter is less than 2 mm are very important to understand heat transfer characteristics and to develop an appropriate heat transfer correlation. In the present study, the evaporation process of $CO_{2}$ in a narrow rectangular channel is visualized at various test conditions, and then the effects of operating conditions are analyzed.

  • This paper deals with the evaluation of several boundary conditions which are commonly used in the lattice Boltzmann equation method. 2-D channel flow(Poiseuille flow) and lid-driven cavity flow was selected as a test problem of this study, because there exist an analytic solution and previous study which could be used for a benchmarking test. It was found that lattice Boltzmann method still needs more considerations of stability and physical consistency, though it could predict the flow patterns both qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • The performance of microchannel PCHE (Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger) is superior to that of other existing commercial heat exchangers. Further, it is also more efficient than other heat exchangers. Various microchannels, whose shapes are straight (I), Wavy, Beehive, Surf, I-Wavy, I-Beehive, or I-Surf, are computationally modeled in this study. The counter-flow arrangement is used, and the flow characteristics, heat transfer, and pressure drop in the microchannels under various mass flow rate conditions are investigated. The results for I microchannel is chosen as the benchmarks and is compared with those of newly proposed microchannels. It is found that the surf-shaped microchannel is most efficient in improving the overall performance of a PCHE.

  • Due to the interaction between main oxidizer flow and the wall injected flow resulting from the regression process, a specific time characteristics identified in the frequency spectrum of streamwise velocity is generated in the hybrid rocket motor. In order to understand the response of the turbulent flow to two different types of external momentum forcing, LES analysis was conducted without considering the combustion. It turns out that both concentrated and distributed forcings do not lead to the disastrous resonance phenomenon. Energy contents are enhanced due to the added momentum but the peak frequency was not modified in the turbulent flow near the end of the rocket motor. Natural frequency of the flow system should be taken into account to further pursue the instability issue by using external forcing.

  • The porous media of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is made of deformable materials. The shape of cross sectional area in air plate channels has been changed by structural deformation of the porous media. The uniform mass flow rate and pressure are major factors for safe and efficient operation in the PEMFC. Two kinds of models are provided for the flow analyses. Deformable and undeformable porous media are considered for numerical analysis and experiment of the air plate model. The numerical flow analysis results with deformable and undeformable porous media has some discrepancy in pressure distribution. The pressure differences are measured in order to compare with numerical analysis results. Pressures are measured between inlet and outlet of the air plate. The numerical analysis and experimental results show similar pressure distribution. It is shown that the pressure drops in the two approaches are well matched each other. It is proven that the consideration of structural deformation is required in the numerical analysis/experiment for the PEMFC design.
