  • With an aim of considering the warping restraint effect, the results of the comparative study for several cases on the correction of the warping functions for the theoretical analysis of composite thin-walled beams with chord wise asymmetric closed cross-sections are presented in this study. To solve this problem, it is necessary to correct the warping function so as to satisfy the warping equilibrium condition like 1) without moving the position of the pole, 2) with only modifying the shape function using the existing pole, and 3) with moving the position of the pole. The cross-sectional characteristics of the cases were compared with each other. Finally, the cases were compared in order to correct the warping functions. The case 2) was observed to be more speedy and simple in computation compared to others.

  • For performance-based design using nonlinear static analysis, it is required to predict the inelastic behavior of structural members accurately. In the present study, a nonlinear numerical analysis was peformed to develop the method describing the moment-curvature relationship of structural wall with boundary confinement. Through the numerical analysis, variations of behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism with the arrangement of vertical reinforcement and the length of boundary confinement were studied. According to the analysis, the maximum moment-carrying capacity of structural walls with adequately confined boundary elements is developed at the moment the unconfined concrete reaches the ultimate compressive strain. Walls with flexural re-bars concentrated on the boundaries fails in a brittle manner. As vortical re-bars in the web increases, the brittle failure is prevented and a ductile failure occurs. Based on the findings, moment-curvature curves for walls with a variety of re-bar arrangement were developed. According to the proposed relationships, deformability of the structural walls wth boundary confinement increases as the compressive strength of the confined concrete increases compared to the applied compressive force.

  • This study had targeted the Manjong Junction~Hongchun interchange section of Jungang highway in order to analyze the efficiency and improvement of the highway wild-life fences. Being analyzed wild-life fence as an effective facility for the prevention of road-kill, it had founded that the wild animals did not jump over even the two layer guardrail, concrete barrier and noise barrier, fence for rock fall. For the section with high road-kill decrease effect after installing the wild-life fence, the effect was higher at wild-life fence with the height of 1.0m where the door had not been installed and the well connected points of road facility than the area with fence height of 1.5m. The road-kill decrease effect was also high at the well managed areas even if the door has not been installed. Also, road-kill had occurred by concentrating around the end of wild-life fence after installing the fence, Moreover road-kill had also occurred around the cutting section. The door of wild-life fence had higher amount of road-kill occurrence as the installation interval was closer. it was analyzed that the door management has a lot of effect on road-kill decrease. The fence for rock fall, two layer guardrail and concrete barrier having the effect of wild-life fence installed on the road would have to be installed by connecting with wild-life fences through proper facility improvement. Although the door should not be installed if possible, it should be installed as automatic door or gravity door to prevent the door from leaving the door open. An escape route has to be formed for the prompt escape away from the road for the animals entered through the ending section of the fence. The eco-corridor has to be made by restoring the soil layer of dual purpose eco-corridor forming a planting area. Also, the dead body after the accident has to be disposed to the outer section of the road immediately in order to prevent the secondary road-kill by the predator from the road-kill. The fence has to be installed as 500m or longer in both ways, in other words 1,000m or longer, from the targeted spot of minimum accident prevention while connecting up to the bridge or box culvert, etc that are next road facilities if possible to guide wild animals safely to the eco-corridor.

  • In a haptic system, a virtual wall is modeled as a virtual spring. The larger the stiffness of the virtual spring is, the more improved the reality of the virtual wall is, but the more unstable the haptic system becomes. This paper shows how to increase the stiffness of the virtual spring while the stability of the haptic system is guaranteed and shows the effects of a mass (Md) and a damper (Bd) of a haptic device on the stability when first-order hold method is applied and a virtual wall is modeled as a virtual spring (Kw). The simulation results show the boundary of the virtual spring is proportional to the square root of the mass (Md) and the damper (Bd) while maintaining the stability. The relation among the virtual spring (Kw), the mass (Md) and the damper (Bd) of the haptic device, and sampling time (T) is inferred as $K_w{\leq}{1.611M_d}^{0.50}{B_d}^{0.50}T^{-1.51}$, by using the simulation results. The maximum available stiffness of the virtual spring in first-order hold method is larger than in zero-order hold method. So the reality of the virtual wall can be improved.

  • In this present study, a response modification factor for a lightweight steel panel-modular system which is not clarified in a current building code was proposed. As a component of the response modification factor, an over-strength factor and a ductility factor were drawn from the nonlinear static analysis curves of the systems modeled on the basis of the performance tests. The final response modification factor was then computed by modifying the previous response modification factor with a MDOF (Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom) base shear modification factor considering the MDOF dynamic behaviors. As a result of computation for the structures designed as a dual frame system, ranging from 2-story to 5-story, the value of 4 was estimated as a final response modification factor for a seismic design, considering the value of 5 as an upper limit of the number of stories.

  • This study is intended to examine the effect of photoluminescent exit signs in the event of failure of both the power to the lighting and illuminated exit sign. To achieve the purpose, the test house was exhibited in Fire EXPO '05. 520 visitors were examined from May 26-29, 2005. The results of this study are as follows; The evacuation from buildings in dark conditions showed that $70\%$ of men and $72\%$ of women were crawled along the wall. Meanwhile, $88\%$ of men and $83\%$ of women were evacuated with ordinary walking in photoluminescent exit signs. The egress time was shortened from 53 seconds to 64 seconds in accordance with age, height and visual power. The photoluminescent exit signs located on public buildings floors will aid in evacuation from buildings in the event of failure of the power to the lightings and illuminated exit signs.

  • Hairy root induced by A. rhizogenes from potato tuber (Solanm tuberosum L.) synthesized the agropine and mannopine which were demonstrated with paper electrophoresis. And the starch contents in hairy root were increased gradually following the developmental stage. But protein contents were decreased. The activity of ${\beta}-glucan$ synthetase II(GSII) which is related to the cell wall biosynthesis was stimulated in hairy root on the developmental stage. And chloropromazine did not influence the activity of GS II while verapamil inhibited about 60% of the activity GS II. Therefore, these results showed $Ca^{2+}$ to be effective factor in the cell wall formation. Isozyme pattern of peroxidase was investigated in the callus and hairy root induced from potato tuber.

  • Yeast cell wall extract (YCWE) was treated on leaves and roots of pepper seedlings at the dosage of 4 mg/mL and salicylic acid (SA) production in pepper was detected by ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). The SA production in pepper stem was induced by YCWE. SA was produced at the highest level of 20.29 ${\mu}g/g$ after 48 hrs of foliar spray with YCWE, which is 3.7 times higher than that of root perfusion with YCWM. SA production was gradually reduced after 72 hrs of YCWE treatment.

  • Statistical evaluation for the heat transfer correlation in the containment subcompartments is carried out from HDR experimental data. Heat transfer data for three HDR blowdown tests, V.42, V.43 and V.44, are analyzed to deduce the correlation. As Uchida already proposed, air-to-steam density ratio is proven to be the most affecting parameter in this study. Here Uchida heat transfer correlation is revised by including temperature difference between the atmosphere and the wall surface, and atmospheric pressure. In addition to these dependencies, atmospheric turbulence and time factor may be included in the model. This implication, however, is not successful, because turbulence and transient phenomena were not adequately quantified in the HDR program. It is concluded that a strong correlation exists between the heat transfer coefficient and temperature differences, specially for forced circulation conditions.
