  • The neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are a kind of neurodegenerative storage disorders. The NCLs are charecterizated by accumulation of autofluorescent lipofuscin or lipopigment in the brain. All NCL group belongs to in lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs), except Northern epilepsy. NCLs are the most common group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders in childhood, with an incidence as high as I in 12,500 live births. Four main clinical types have been described based on the onset age : infantile, late infantile, juvenile and adult types. Clinical symptoms of NCLs include loss of vision, seizures, epilepsy, progressive mental retardation and a premature death. Although mutation causes neurodegeneration in NCLs, the molecular mechanism by which mutation leads to neurodegeneration remains unclear. In this paper, we review the characteristics of these NCLs.

  • The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of surgical therapy combined with the usage of metronidazole gel in the treatment of juvenile periodontitis by comparing clinical indices of flap operation along with application of metronidazole gel and flap operation only. Comparing clinical indices of the baseline, 3 months after surgery, 6 months after surgery statistically, the results are as follows; 1. Bleeding on probing (BOP) was decreased significantly both in the experimental group and the control group at 3 months after surgery (p<0.05). BOP increased 0.9% in the control group 6 months after surgery, while in the experimental group, decreased 4.7% (p>0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in these groups (p>0.05). 2. Pocket probing depth (PPD) was decreased significantly both in the experimental group and the control group at 3 months after surgery (p<0.05). PPD increased 0.lmm in the control group 6 months after surgery, while in the experimental group, no increase of the depth could be observed (p>0.05). However, there was no statistically significant and difference in these groups (p>0.05). 3. Loss of attachment level(LOA) was decreased significantly both in the experimental group and the control group at 3 months after surgery (p<0.05). LOA increased 0.2mm in the control group 6 months after surgery, while in the experimental group, increased 0.3mm However, there was no statistically significant difference in these groups (p>0.05). In conclusion, flap operation was effective on the treatment of juvenile periodontitis. However, combined therapy of metronidazole gel could not give rise to any significant adjunctive effect on the treatment outcome.

  • The purpose of this study was to document the changes in astronomical concepts for preservice and inservice elementary school teachers after being presented with the newly devised Earth Motions Centric Solar System Model. The subjects of the study were 31 preservice and 30 inservice elementary schools teachers in the Jeonbuk Province. First, the author investigated the naive theories of the subjects, and then, compared that data to the data obtained after their exposure to the model. The total number of items on the instrument for this study was 10. These items included questions about the motion of interior planets, the phases and sizes of interior planets, and the motion of exterior planets and comets. After analyzing the answers to the items before the experiment, the author was able to confirm the existence of the naive theories regarding astronomical phenomena. Also, after the experiment, the author was able to observe the conceptual change in thought of the preservice and inservice elementary school teachers. Results showed that learning through the new model had positive effects on the preservice and inservice elementary school teachers' conceptualization of the interior planets' motion, phases and sizes, and the exterior planets' motion.

  • Twelve patients of localized juvenile periodontitis were evaluated to detection of serum IgG and IgM antibodies to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4 strain. Sera were isolated from those patients. Antibody titer of patients sera to Aa stran Y4 strain. Sera were isolated from those patients. Antibody titer of patients sera to Aa stran Y4 were determined by modified enzyme-linked immunosorbent assey (ELISA) using sonicated and formalin-fixed whole Aa y4 strain for detection of serum IgG and IgM antibody titers. To compare with health control and L.J.P., we used 12 healthy dental student who did not exhibited any gingivits. Results were determined by using ELISA reader at 400mm absorbance value. Data analysis were performed with comparison of the regression functions relating absorbance to dilution and Dunnett t-test. Significant high antibody titer to As Y4 in L.J.P. sera were shown in this examination(281. 4 Eu-G to 162.80 Eu-G, 106.0 Eu-M to 40.0 Eu-M for sonicated As Y4 antigen and 653.960. to 138.117 Eu-M for intact As Y4) and this data were also statistically significant (P<0.05). • Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) associated with gastritis and gastric cancer is mainly detected dental plaque and saliva in the oral cavity. Most infection is probably acquired in childhood, but the route of transmission is not clear. The oral cavity has been indicated as secondary reservoir of H. pylori, and may therefore be argued in the route of transmission and reinfection of the stomach which follows treatment of H. pylori infection. So this review aimed to discuss about H. pylori in the oral cavity. H. pylori in stomach can appear in the oral cavity by gastroesophageal reflex or vomiting, but infection of stomach and oral cavity is different. Diagnostic methods are serological method, urea breath test, PCR method, urease test, histologic method and so on. Nested PCR recommend for detection of H. pylori in saliva and dental plaque. H. pylori infection in the oral cavity appear variously and is no relation with dental diseases. The antimicrobial mouthrinse recommend in patients with periodontal diseases because of high detection rate fo H. pylori. Thus H. pylori may be considered as the normal oral microflora.

  • This study is an autoethnography from the perspective of Erikson's psychosocial development to investigate how gender discrimination has affected the development of one person. Research materials were diaries, essays, phone interviews, and interviews. As a result, this study indicated that the wounds suffered during infancy persisted for a long time. After growing up, although it was possible to change one's ideas of gender discrimination by learning, it seemed difficult to overcome from trauma completely. Therefore, this study is meaningful to show the understanding of the development of an individual through a social problem and can be expanded to research the same subject by combining other categories.

  • Through the comparison of "Rendezvous with a Bird" with "Araby", there were found to be well-explained psychological causes of the boy's (Petya) behavior that closely discloses the concrete object of desperation and definitely confirmed the internal causes of heroes (vanity of the boys in "Araby" and "Rendezvous with bird"). Through the comparison of "Rendezvous with a Bird" with "A man in a boat" we also knew that Petya's indefinite fear of death was to some extent a sense of guilt. This study contains a full-scale review of Russian contemporary writer Tatyana Tolstaya's short story "Rendezvous with a Bird", which is one of the her earliest works. As many critics indicate, the works of Tatyana Tolstaya resonate with metaphor. "Rendezvous with a bird" plays an important role in understanding this metaphoric tendency. In order to understand the metaphoric tendency of her works we need our own reading strategy, and so we inquired into the grasp of the main motifs. Analysis of the main motifs can start from the understanding of meanings of the very figurative title 'Rendezvous with a Bird'. To understand the meanings of the title, we first of all analyzed the incidents of actual or figurative meetings with birds in this work, and through this we deduced two main motifs. We confirmed one main motif of 'desperation', which centers on the love of a young boy and woman. We confirmed the other motif as 'death', which developed into the rendezvous of the grandfather with inevitable death. Thus, the 'desperation' and 'death' with which we meet in childhood becomes a subject matter for the writer. To understand the deeper meanings of these main motifs, we compared "Rendezvous with Bird" with the short story "Araby" by James Joyce and with the short story "A man in a boat" by Eyvind Johnson, which very successfully deal with the motifs: 'desperation' and 'death'.

  • The purpose of this study was to ascertain high school student ideas on the motion of the Earth and moon by cognitive level. For this study, five students determined to be of high, middle and low cognitive level selected from 73 10th-grade students at a high school located in Suwon, Gyeonggido. The results of this study were as follows: first, students at the high cognitive level had comparatively more logical and scientific conception on the revolution and rotation of the Earth and moon. second, students at the middle cognitive level, generally had a passive learning attitude to unconditionally memorize learned contents, so they were apt to forget learned contents, also their recognized conception was not enlarged. In addition, they had native theories, intuitive ideas and misconceptions as well as made logical errors in the course of explanation for the motion of the Earth and moon. In the course of explanation for the phases of the moon and the cause of change of season, because of their scientific conception, the students made more and more errors in conception. finally students at the low cognitive level were not willing to think logically and positively and were very passive in the attitude to recognize conception. In addition, they have learned helplessness on the grounds that they have low scholastic achievement specially in science.

  • The debate about whether depressive disorders should be divided into categories or arrayed along a continuum has gone for decade, without resolution. In our review, there is more evidence consistent with the spectrum concept than there is with the idea that depressive disorders constitute discrete clusters marked by relatively discontinuous boundaries. First, "depression spectrum", "is there a common genetic factors in bipolar and unipolar affective disorder", "threshold model of depression" and "bipolar spectrum disorder" are reviewed. And, a new subtype of depression is so called SeCA depression that is a stressor-precipitated, cortisol-induced, serotonin-related, anxiety/aggression-driven depression. SeCA depression is discussed. But, there is with the idea that depressive disorders constitute discrete subtypes marked by relatively discontinuous boundaries. This subtypes of depressive disorder were reviewed from a variety of theoretical frames of reference. The following issues are discussed ; Dexamethasone suppression test(DST), TRH stimulation test, MHPG, Temperament Character Inventory(TCI), and heart rate variability(HRV).
