This review paper presents an introduction of contact mechanics and rubber friction theory for sliding friction of elastomer composites in contact with rough surfaces. Particularly, Klüppel & Heinrich theory considers the self-affine (or fractal) characteristic for rough surfaces to predict adhesion and hysteresis frictions of elastomers based on the contact mechanics of Greenwood & Williamson. Due to dynamic excitation process of elastomer composites while sliding in contact with multiscale surface roughness (or asperity), viscoelastic properties in a wide frequency range becomes major contributor to friction behaviors. A brief description and examples are provided to construct a viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinear viscoelasticity of elastomer composites. Finally, application of rubber friction theory to tire tread compounds in traction with road surfaces is discussed with several experimental and theoretical results.

The durability of concrete and the water-tightness properties of cementitous material are closely relation. So, water-tightness materials as natural minerals, organic fatty acid, organic fatty salts inorganic materials use for improvement of concrete durability. But these materials are somehow different in water-tightness mechanism. In this study, we studied on hydration properties and water-tightness properties of cementitous materials with zinc-stearate, a kind of organic fatty acid salts.
An organic acid material, which can be manufactured by plants extraction, encourages microbe proliferation over time. Microbial activity, which is affected by organic acid, encourages accelerating consolidation with biochemical penetration; soil particles are compacted by microbes and pore water is dissipated quickly. Additionally, $CaCO_3$ for cementation was made by proliferating microbes. Accordingly, tests were conducted to investigate the unconfined compressive strength and permeability of soil samples aged with and without an organic acid. In the 96 days of aging, the strength was generally 1.5~2.5 times greater than those without an organic acid material and permeability was definitely decreased to 74.2~93.1%. SEM analysis showed the change of pore structure and the change of the total bacteria counts revealed the activity of microbes reflecting the engineering characteristics and this material would be an environment-friendly for soil improvement.

Scientists and engineers have altered the properties of materials such as metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics, and so on, to suit the ever changing needs of our society. Man-made engineering materials generally demonstrate excellent mechanical properties, which often tar exceed those of natural materials. However, all such engineering materials lack the ability of self-healing, i.e. the ability to remove or neutralize microcracks without intentional human interaction. The damage management paradigm observed in nature can be reproduced successfully in man-made engineering materials, provided the intrinsic character of the various types of engineering materials is taken into account. Various self-healing ptotocols that can be applied for the organic materials such as polymers, ionomers and composites can be developed by utilizing suitable chemical reactions and physical intermolecular interactions.

Continued advancements in organic materials have led to the development of organic devices that are thin, flexible, and lightweight and that can potentially be used as low-cost energy-conversion devices. While these devices have many advantages, the environmentally induced degradation of the active materials and the low-work-function electrodes remain a valid concern. Hence, many vacuum deposition processes have been applied to develop low-permeation barrier coatings. In this work, we present the results pertaining to the developed thin-film encapsulation. Multilayer encapsulation involves the use of $SiO_x$ or $SiN_x$ with parylene. The effective water vapor transmission rates were investigated using a Ca-corrosion test. The integration of the developed barrier layers was demonstrated by encapsulating pentacene/$C_{60}$ solar cells, and the results are presented.
