  • CAE-based structural optimization techniques are applied for the design of a lightweight crane. The boom of the crane is designed by shape optimization with the shape of the cross section of the boom as the design variable. The design objective is mass minimization, and the static strength and dynamic stiffness of the system are set as the design constraints. Hyperworks, a commercial analysis and optimization software, is used for shape and topology optimization. In order to consistently change the shape of the elements of the boom with respect to the change in the shape of its cross section, the morphing function in Hyperworks is used. The support of the boom of the original model is simplified to model the design domain for topology optimization, which is discretized by using three-dimensional solid elements. The final result after shape and topology optimization is 19% and 17% reduction in the masses of the boom and support, respectively, without a deterioration in the system stiffness.

  • The head frame structure of a machine tool for aircraft parts, which requires machining precision and machining of difficult-to-cut materials is required to be light-weighted for precision high-speed machining and to minimize possible deformation by cutting force. To achieve high stiffness and for light-weight structure optimization design, a preliminary model was designed based on finite element analysis. The topology optimization design of light-weight, high stiffness, and low vibration frame structure were performed by minimizing compliance. As a result, the frame weight decreased by 17.3%, the maximum deflection was less than 0.007 mm, and the natural frequency increased by 30.6%. The static stiffness was increased in each axis direction and the dynamic stiffness exhibited contrary results according to the axis. Optimized structure with the high stiffness of low vibration in topology optimization design was confirmed.

  • When designing ships and aircraft structures, it is important to design them to satisfy weight reduction and strength. Currently, studies related to topology optimization using 3D printed composite materials are being actively conducted to satisfy the weight reduction and strength of the structure. In this study, structural analysis was performed to analyze the applicability of 3D printed composite materials to the flight control surface, one of the parts of an aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle. The optimal topology shape of the flight control surface for the bending load was analyzed by considering three types (hexagonal, rectangular, triangular) of the topology shape of the flight control surface. In addition, the bending strength of the flight control surface was analyzed when four types of reinforcing materials (carbon fiber, glass fiber, high-strength high-temperature glass fiber, and kevlar) of the 3D printed composite material were applied. As a result of comparing the three-point bending test results with the finite element method results, it was confirmed that the flight control surface with hexagonal topology shape made of carbon fiber and Kevlar had excellent performance. And it is judged that the 3D printed composite can be sufficiently applied to the flight control surface.

  • Damper springs in a drive-line absorb the impulsive torque generated when a lock-up clutch is connected directly, instead of via a fluid coupling. Design optimization and finite element analysis were performed to improve the shock- and vibration-absorption capacity of the lock-up clutch. For this purpose, a multi-body dynamics model was developed by including the main parts of a vehicle, such as an engine with a clutch, a transmission, drive shafts and wheels, and a whole mass of a vehicle. The spring constants were selected so that resonance of a system could be avoided. Damper springs were optimized on the basis of the spring constants, impulsive torques, compressed angles, spring counts, fatigue constraints, etc. Topology optimization was performed for three plates with the damper springs. The compliance was set up as an objective function, and volume fraction was fixed below 0.3. A new shape for the plates was proposed on the basis of the topology result.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) is an optimization technique based on natural evolution theory to find the global optimal solution. Unlike the gradient-based method, it can design nanoscale structures in the electric field because it does not require sensitivity calculation. This research intends to design a nanoaperture with an unprecedented shape by the topology optimization scheme based on the GA and ON/OFF method in the visible frequency range. This research mainly aims to maximize the transmission rate at a measuring area located 10nm under the exit plane and to minimize the electric distribution at other locations. The finite element analysis (FEA) and optimization process are performed by using the commercial package COMSOL combined with the Matlab programming. The final results of the optimized model are analyzed by a comparison of the electric field intensity and the spot size of near field with those of the initial model.

  • Present work deals with a shape optimal design to minimize the weight of the mask-frame used in the process of OLED vapor deposition by the fine metal mask. A design concept for an optimal shape of the frame to increase the stiffness and to reduce the weight is derived using the topology optimization, shape design variables of the frame by adopting slots being defined. An optimal shape is determined by solving the shape optimization problem to minimize the weight of the frame under constraints of the maximum displacement. Weight of the optimal design is 117.6 kg, which is reduced by 138.4 kg(54.1%) of that of the first design, 256 kg.

  • Recently, the development of new structural model in optical mechanical system is required to be started from the conceptual design with low cost, high performance and quality. In this point, a structural-topological shape of system concerned with conceptual design of mechanical structure has a great effect on performance of the system such as the structural rigidities and weight reduction. In this paper, the optimization design methodologies are presented in the design stages of large optical structure. First, using topology optimization, we obtain the optimal layout and the reinforcement of structure, and then carry out the detail designs using size optimization and multidisciplinary optimization technique. As an example, these methods were applied to the design of large mirror structure.

  • This paper proposes a new topology optimization scheme to determine optimized joints for multi-component models. The joints are modeled as zero-length high-stiffness spring elements. The spring joints are considered as mesh-independent springs based on a joint-element interpolation scheme. This enables the changing of the location of the joints regardless of the connected nodes during optimization. Because the joints are movable, the locations of the optimized joints should be aggregated at several points. In this paper, the novel joint dispersal (JD) constraint to prevent joint clustering is proposed. With the joint dispersal constraint, it is possible to determine the optimized joint location as well as optimized topologies while maintaining the minimum distance between each joint. The mechanical compliance value is considered as the objective function. Several topology optimization examples are solved to demonstrate the effect of the joint dispersal constraint.

  • In this study, a fully active transfemoral prothesis with a knee joint is designed considering stair walking conditions. Since the torque at the knee joint required for stair walking condition is relative high compared with the one in normal walking condition, the proposed design has high torque generating mechanism. Moreover, the transfemoral prothesis is designed in compact size to reduce its weight, which is related to comfortable fit and fatigue of patients. Flat type BLDC motor is used for simple and compact structure and various components are used to generate required torque with target working angle and speed. The weight reduction of structure is carried out using optimization method after the initial design process is complete. The optimization is conducted under the load conditions of stair walking. The optimized design is validated via finite element analysis and experiments. As a result, the weight is reduced using topology and shape optimization but maintaining the safety of structure. Also the space efficiency is improved due to its compact size.
