  • This study was conducted to investigate the life history of Compsidia populnea which is major species of the stem-borers on Populus alba{\times}glandulosa$. Peak emergence of the adult of Compsidia populnea L. was around 10th${\sim}$l2nd of May in Chuncheon vicinities, having one generation a year in Korea. There was a preovipositional period of 10.7 days and a ovipositional period of 14.3.days. Mean adult longevity was 11 days for male and 13.8 days for female. Individual eggs were long oval with somewhat narrowed tip at one side and soft, 2.6mm in length, 0.8mm in diameter, and were laid singly under the U-shaped scars which were made by female before oviposition. Total number of scars per female averaged 56.6 ($8{\sim}135$) and eggs were found in 67.9 percent of the total scars. Egg period was $8{\sim}11$ days at $25^{\circ}C$ constant temperature and $7{\sim}14$ days in the field condition. Early young larvae stayed for $2{\sim}3$ weeks under the scars and then boring into the xylem, forming galls at this time. Size of the gall was 1.8cm($1.3{\sim}2.5$) in length, 1.6cm($1.0{\sim}2.2$) in diameter and the length of mine was everage 3.1cm. Fully grown larvae were developed around the early October and overwintered in the mines of galls. Pupation was done around the early of April. Pupal developmental period averaged 11 days($9{\sim}13$ days) at $25^{\circ}C$ constant temperature condition.

  • The populations of microorganisms adhered on rice straws which had been ricked in the fields around Chungchong areas during the winter season from February to March in 1998 were investigated. The number of mesophilic bacteria including bacilli was generally high in the middle part of straw. And it appeared to be higher in the samples from rural areas than those from suburb. Thermophilic bacteria and actinomycetes were rarely to be detected in most samples. Coliform bacteria were detected in a few samples which collected from Kwanpyong-dong of Taejon-city, Jangpyong-meun and Jungsan-meun of Chongyang-koon, indicating that these areas were contaminated by sewage and livestock wastes. Following the fermentation of Chungkukgang employed the middle parts of straws from Mok-meun of Chongyang-koon as a source of microbial inoculum, qualities of the fermented products such as amino-nitrogen content, viscosity and protease activity, were examined: the application of rice straws resulted in better qualities of the fermented products when compared to the control, however the methods of application appeared to have little or no effect on the quality.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality changes of Chinese cabbage with various storage methods. The V/H ratio, as reference of withering, of Chinese cabbage in PE film was high. Ethanol contents of Chinese cabbage packed with 0.06mm and 0.1mm PE film pouch were greater than that with 0.03mm PE film pouch. Organic acid and sugar contents in the Chinese cabbage were gradually decreased during storage. Chinese cabbage packed with 0.03mm PE film pouch was more adaptable than 0.06mm PE film pouch in winter Chinese cabbage during storage. The CO$_2$ contents in PE film pouch was increased hums 15days of storage, and then not changed during storage. The change of O$_2$ contents in PE film Pouch was opposed to tendency of CO$_2$ change. The 0.06mm and 0.1mm PE film Pouch high CO$_2$ contents and low O$_2$ contents during the storage, were less adaptable than 0.03mm PE film pouch in the winter Chinese cabbage storage.

  • Bacterial wihte enteritis ocurred by infection of V. ichthyoenteri is a devastating disease in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) hatcheries in Korea. Since white enteritis has been a problem in aquqtic industries, necessity of a rapid detection method is increased. In an attempt to develop rapid PCR method the detection of V. ichthyoenteri, we examined the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region(ISR) of V. ichthyoenteri and developed species-specific primer for V. ichthyoenteri. The intergenic spacers were amplified by primers complementary to conserved region of 16S and 23S rRNA genes. The intergenic spacer region between the 16S and 23S rRNA genes of V. ichthoenteri were investigated by PCR fragment length typing and DNA sequencing. Analysis of the ISR sequences showed that V. ichthyoenteri contains one types of polymorphic ISRs. The size of ISRs ranged 348bp length and not contains tRNA genes. Mutiple alignment of representative sequences from different Vibrio species revealed several domains of high sequence variability, and allowed to design species-specific primer for detection of Vibrio ichthyoenteri. PCR. The specific of the primer was examined using genomic DNA prepared from 19 different Vibrio species, isolated 18group Vibrio species. The results showed that the PCR reaction using species-specific primer designed in this study can be used to detect V. ichthyoenteri.

  • Objective of this study was to evaluate the adaptation and the soil conservation effect of improved wild vine in sloped upland of highland about 600m from sea level in Korea. A mainly producing district of the improved wild vine in Korea was distributed 230m to 540m from sea level, and its rainfall ranged 1,200 to 1,700 mm. The lowest temperature was from -19.6 to $-25.4^{\circ}C$. Their soil texture was from sandy loam to clay loam, where drainage class was well drained and the contents of soil organic matter and total nitrogen in the improved wild vine's cultivation area were higher than those of Chinese cabbage's cultivation area in the highland. According to improved wild vine's cultivation methods, the amounts of soil erosion were 25.5,4.1, and $1.8MT\;ha^{-1}$ in clean culture, part sod + mulching, and nature sod, respectively. Those were below 30 to $80MT\;ha^{-1}$ of sloped upland at highland in Korea. The result suggests that it is possible to cultivate the improved wild vine over wintering at 600m of highland above the sea level. We can substitute the improved wild vine for Chinese cabbage in the highland for soil conservation.

  • Studies were carried out to examine seasonal occurrence and emergence pattern of the onion fly, Delia antiqua (Meigen), in the field of Chinju city in Gyeongnam province from 1984 to 1987. Trap catch revealed that the onion fly had three generations in a year, the second flight being partial; the peaks of adult occurrence were at mid April for the overwintered generation (1st flight), at early June for the first generation (2nd flight), and at the period from late September to early October for the autumn generation (3rd flight). It was shown that parts of the pupae in the first and almost all of the pupae in the second (or autumn) generation underwent summer diapause. The pupal periods were less than 22.4 days for the non-diapaused pupae, while those of the diapause. The pupal periods were less than 22.4 days for the non-diapaused pupae, while those of the diapaused pupae were form 8.5 to 145 days in the first generation in he filed, being shorter for the pupae pupated later. This resutled in synchronization on the emergence of these diapaused pupae at late September, with the adults from the second generation pupae. The ratio of diapausing pupae increased among the later pupated ones in the first generation ; the pupae which had been pupated in early May included 43.8% of diapausing pupae, while more than 86.7% of the pupae were under diapausing state for the pupae pupated in late May and thereafter. More than 93.3% of the pupae went into diapause, regardless of pupation time for the second generation.

  • Soil erosion is one of the most serious problems in alpine upland in Korea. Soil fertility has continuously decreased due to serious soil erosion. To increase soil fertility, new sources of organic matter should be inputted. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to select winter cover crop as new sources of organic matter and to investigate the effect of winter cover crop on soil property changes, major crop productivity (Chinese cabbage, potato) production in highland, and disease occurrence with different cropping systems. Among 17 candidates for winter coverage crop, rye was most suitable due to it's soil covering rate, and over-wintering rate. The optimum sowing period for rye ranged from late August to late September. Soil porosity and organic matter content increased with rye cultivation. Rye cultivation during winter increased amounts of crop (both Chinese cabbage and potato) productivity up to 8%. There was little difference on amount of crop productivity depending on cropping systems such as monoculture (Chinese cabbage or potato) and Chinese cabbage-potato rotation.

  • We decided the efficient application timings of organo-synthetic insecticides for controlling the first generation larvae of O. furnacalis through investigations of insect stage-specific densities, damage aspects in maize, and effects of insecticides. A waxy maize cultivar, Ilmichal, was cultivated from April 20 (sowing) to July 26 (harvest, dough stage of maize) in Suwon, 2016. The maximum and 50% cumulative catch dates of the overwintering generation adults in the sex pheromone trapping were May 29 and May 31, respectively. Most of the first generation larvae finished their occurrence till the early reproductive stage of maize. The first generation larvae fed on leaves inside the whorl leaves before tassel and stem development of maize, sequentially moved to tassel and stem, and then moved finally to stem and ear parts. In the results of insecticide applications at different dates, the 9-11 leaf stage (June 10~17) and the 6-7 leaf stage (June 3) of maize were the most efficient application timings for direct spray of Etofenprox EC to maize, and for application of Carbofuran granules onto soil surface, respectively, which resulted in suppression of tunnelling damages. The timings for the two insecticides were 12-19 days and 5 days after the adult maximum catch date, respectively. Those timings after the 50% cumulative adult catch date were advanced 2 days.
