Life histoy of Nysius plebejrrs, the most injurious pest in chysanthemun cultivation in Korea, was studies both in field and inseday in Chinju during 1991 and 1992 seasons, and resulis are summarized as below 7hls insect has 3 generation per year, adult peaks on the mid April, mid June and late August, and the highest number of adults were attracted to the light tmp from the late August through mid September. Overwntered generation and needed 6-7weeks from egg rnatulity m spring, and 5-6 weeks, for both the first and second generation m summer, Incubation egg periods were 142, 9.3 and 7.2 days, nymphal penods were 45.2, 32.1 and 31.2 days, and total growth periods, were 59.4. 41 4 and 38.4 days, respect~vely for the overwintered, flst and second generation. Ovipositional penods were 25.6, 23.4 and 21.2 days. and number of eggs Iald by each female were 41.5. 37.2 and 35.4 days, respedively of each generation Longevities of female were 326, 27.5 and 25.1 days. and of male were 15 2, 12.3 and 12.1 days. respectively of each generation. Sex ratlo was about 1:1 in all generation, and eggs were laid in mass on the surface of leaves or stems of the host plants. This insed over-wmters as adult (90%) or 5th instar nymph (10%), however, over-wintering adults seem to be sexually premature, and mating take place actively in the following spring.

A remote sensing pheromone trap called IT pheromone trap (Korean patent: 10-0982563) was applied to monitor overwintering population changes of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, for three successive years in apple orchards. Males of the overwintering populations were attracted during April and May. However, the occurrence peak was delayed and extended to early June in 2010, at which the average spring temperature was significantly lower than the previous years. These overwintering populations could be monitored by the remote-sensing pheromone trap. When the remote-sensing pheromone traps were deployed to apple orchards of different provinces in Korea in 2010, the maximal overwintering populations of G. molesta were monitored at May in all areas. However, the population sizes monitored were significantly different among different localities. This study suggests a practical application of IT pheromone trap to monitor G. molesta in field conditions.

Spring phonology of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, was monitored using sex pheromone traps in apple cultivating areas. Their occurrence was earlier in southern areas and their population sizes were significantly different among orchards even in a local cultivating zone. The overwintering populations appeared to move between local orchards, based on the fact that monitoring data obtained at the sites between orchards were similar to those of nearby orchards. However, within orchards, these adult movements appeared to decrease and showed skewed occurrences at the side of upwind direction or close to neighboring orchards. At initial occurrence peak(April 20-25), the ovenvintering populations of the different localities were collected and analyzed in their genetic distances. PCR-RAPD analysis indicated that there were significant genetic differences among the overwintering populations of G. molesta. This genetic differentiation of overwinterin populations may be due to genetic bottleneck following differential selection pressures against the subpopulations of G. molesta during winter on the basis of the RAPD analysis that each early spring population was significantly different to its previous fall population in the same locality.
The viruliferous vectors of the rice dwarf virus, nymphs of Nephotettix cincticeps did not overwinter in Uljin, although the disease occurred in fields. When considered the relationship between seasonal changes of vector and disease occurrence, there were 5 and 3 peaks in a year in occurrence of vector and disease, respectively. The overwintered adults and the nymphs of the 2nd and 3rd generation served as the major transmittor of the. virus. In a field where the disease has been a problem for years, the ratoon hills rice cultivar Milyang No. 30 was infected $22.4\~26.8\%$ with the rice dwarf virus. When nonviruliferous nymphs were fed on the infected ratoon hills for 11 to 30 days, viruliferous nymphs overwintered, increased to $13.0\~18.2\%$. The winter barley infected with rice dwarf virus did not survive in winter, suggesting that infected barley may not serve as a inoculum source.
Four polymorphic allozymes were used for genetic analysis of overwintering populations of field diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linne). Different allele frequencies were found among three local populations of Andong, Youngchon, and Yangsan in all loci. Two allozyme loci (acid phosphatase and phosphoglucomutase) showed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in allele frequencies among these populations. Estimated Nei's genetic distance varied from 0.0151 between Yangsan and Youngchon to 0.0877 between Andong and Youngchon. Compared with the previous genetic distances in this moth, a little higher genetic differentiation among these overwintering populations suggests that there would be a specific genetic bottleneck in each local population during overwintering period.
The smaller brown planthopper overwinters mostly as the fourth instar nymph. The emerged adult disperses to winter barley or wheat plants. The adult of the first generation disperses into the rice field, and spends three generations in the rice field. The population densities of the adults of the first generation and the overall density of the second generations are the most important in relation to the incidents of the rice stripe disease which is transmitted by this insects. This study was intended to analyse the population increases in these important generations in relation to the kind and the different growing stage of the host plants. The insects were reared on potted host plants of different growing stage in the insect cages. The population increases of the insects in the cages were compared with those on the rice seedlings in the laboratory. The results are as follows: 1. The average longevities of the adults of the generations were 13.4 days for the overwintered, 12.9 days for the first, and 10.2 days for the second generation, and showed no significant differences between the generations even they seemed to be shorter than normal condition probably caused by the frequent disturbance at the time of food renewal in 2 or 3 days. 2. When they were reared on the rice seedling, the average numbers of the eggs per female were 131.2 for the overwintered generation, 124.9 for the first generation grown on the barley, and 142.3 for the second generation grown on rice, and shelved no significant differences between the generations. More than $90\%$ of the eggs were laid within 3 weeks. 3. The hatchabilities of the eggs laid on the rice seedling in laboratory were $77.4\%$ for the first generation, $93.1\%$ for the second generation and $62.1\%$ for the third generation. The estimated hatchabilities of the eggs were $67.5\%$ for the first generation, $84.1\%$for the second generation, and $21.9\%$ for the third generation with the growing plants on the plots. The hatchability on the eggs laid by the adults infested on the barley on May 17 was $13.5\%$ compared with $67.5\%$ for the eggs laid by those infested on barley in late April. 4. The average total nymphal periods were 19.4 days for the first generation, and 13.3 days for the second generation in the laboratory and the mortalities of the nymphs seemed to related with the growing stages of the host plants. 5. With the pot experiments, the average per cents of the emerged adults were $37.2\%$ for the first generation, $55.3\%$ for the second generation, and $11.6\%$, for the third generation. The average numbers of the emerged adults were $7.4\%$ for the pots infested on the barley on May 17, instead of $37.2\%$ adults for those infested in late April. 6. From above results, it may suggest that the innate qualities of the insect are not significantly different between generations, and the differences in the increase of the population for the generations might effected considerably by the differences in the physiological conditions of tile host plant, besides the differences in physical and other biological factors.
The occurrence and damage by the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) were investigated on pear trees from 1996 to 2000 in the Naju, Korea. The number of overwintering larvae in pear trees considerably varied depending on the maturation time of varieties. The density of overwintering larvae on late cultivars such as Gamcheonbae and Okusankichi was high, but relatively low on early cultivars. Trunk and main branch of pear trees were main overwintering sites. In 1997, overwintering larvae began to pupate from middle February, and to emerge from late March. Male moths were caught in the sex pheromone traps from late March until early October with four peaks of flight in 1996~2000. In every generation larvae damaged both the shoots and fruits of pear tree, but the first and second generation larvae tended to damage mainly shoots, while most of the injured fruits were due to the third and fourth generation larvae. In pear fruits damaged by fruit moths, most of these were caused by oriental fruit moth larvae and none of pear fruits were damaged by peach fruit moth or pear fruit moth larvae in 1998~2000.
Apple bitter rot caused by Glomerella cingulata has been known to occur annually on the fruits of previously infected twigs and the trunks. This study was carried out to ensure whether the pathogen overwinters in the form of perithecium or not. Since the acervuli of the pathogen were formed in inoculated apple trees, it would be possible that the pathogen could overwinter on the twigs, Ascigerous stage was found both under the cuticle of the infected trunk and in outer layers of rotted fruits. Therefore, it could be concluded that the pathogen overwintered in the form of perithecium is a primary inoculum in next year. Ascigerous stage of the appfe bitter rot organism was observed for the first time in Korea.

Torymus geranii was found to be a ectoparasitoid attacking the larvae of Dryocosmus kuriphilus. T. geranii has longevity of a $42.8{\pm}9.8$ days at $20^{\circ}C$ and $26.5{\pm}11.0$ day at $25^{\circ}C$ under conditions supplied with 100% honeydew. Oviposition numbers at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ were $22.3{\pm}12.5$ and $42.2{\pm}18.4$, respectively. The eggs were oval in shape, measuring $0.56{\pm}0.33$ mm in length. The larvae, $2.94{\pm}0.18mm$ in length, was white and length of male and female pupae were $2.01{\pm}0.18mm$ and $2.73{\pm}0.09mm$, respectively. T. geranii had two generations with overwintering generation emerged on late May to early June at Chunchon, central part of Korea, however showed three generations with overwintering generation emerged on middle May to early June, the first one on late June to early July, and the second one on late July to earlyl August.
Seasonal occurrence of Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi Haga et Okajima, and its damage pattern on leaves and fruits were studied at sweet persimmon orchards in Gimhae (orchard A, B) and Changwon, Gyeongnam. Korea in 2002 and 2003. Monitoring adults by yellow sticky traps and inspecting each developmental stage in damaged rolled-leaves revealed that the overwintered adults moved to sweet persimmon orchard from late April to late May, and oviposited inside the rolled leaves. Adults developed from the eggs showed peak occurrence of the first generation adults in early to mid June. Inspection of rolled leaves indicated that the peak occurrences of eggs, nymphs, and pupae of the first generation took place in early to mid May, late May to early June, and early June, respectively. Each developmental stage showed the second small peaks in the late season. Results suggest that most thrips live a single generation per year, but a small portion may develop to the second generation in persimmon orchards. The percent of damaged leaves was highest in Changwon orchard at 9.7% in early June. Percentage of damaged fruits increased from 0.84% in early June to 30.2% in early September in Gimhae B orchard. It was found that the closer the persimmon trees were to the edge of the orchard, the worse damaged the leaves were. Appropriate timing for incorporation of control measures were discussed in relation to the seasonal occurrence of adults.
