  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Mechanical or thermal fatigue crack and intergranular stress corrosion cracking could be occured in the in-service nuclear power plant and mechanical fatigue crack was selected to study in this paper. Specimen was designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw under tensile stress. The number of cycles and the level of stress were controlled to obtain the desired flaw roughness. After the accurate physical measurement of the flaw size and location, fracture surface was seal-welded in place to ensure the designed location and site. The remaining weld groove was then filled by using gas-tungsten are welding(GTAW) and flux-cored arc welding(FCAW). Results of radio graphic and ultrasonic testing showed that fatigue cracks were consistent with the designed size and location in the final specimens.

  • For the safe management of radwaste repository, data of the site and environment have to be collected and managed systematically. Particularly, for the radwaste repository, which has to be institutionally controlled for a long period after closure, data will be collected and maintained through the monitoring programme. To meet this requirement, a new programme called "Site Information and Total Environmental data management System (SITES)" is being developed. In this study, as the first stage of GIS(Geographic Information System) development that will be embedded in SITES, the scope and function of GIS are issued. Methodology for the Selection and management of thematic maps is studied as well.d as well.

  • Several radionuclides are considered as an object of the assesment to develop a scaling factor and a periodical verification method which are needed for the evaluation of radionuclide inventory of various radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants in Korea. A selective separation of $^{55}Fe$, $^{90}FSr$$^{94}Nb$ which should be recovered individually for the radiochemical analysis was described in detail. Sorption and desorption behaviours of ion exchange and extraction chromatographic resins for Fe, Sr, Nb and co-existing metal ions were Investigated using an artificial waste solution simulated of chemical composition of real radioactive wastes. Separation conditions available for the sequential recovery of these metal ions from a single sample were optimized to minimize a discharge of radioactive wastes produced through the analytical process and a radiation exposure to analysts. Their recovery yields were measured with reliability.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the feasibility using thermal image measurement that is applicable to internal leak diagnosis for the power plant valve. Abnormal heating of valve surface associated with high temperature steam f10w toward valve outlet side in the condition of low temperature is a primary indicator of leakage problems in high temperature and pressure valves. Thermal imaging enables to see the invisible thermal radiation that may portend impending damage before their condition becomes critical. When steam flow in valve outlet side in the condition of low temperature is converted into heat transmitted through the valve body due to the internal leakage in valve. The existence of abnormally increasable leakage rate in the valve will result in abnormally high levels of heat to be generated that can be quickly identified with a thermal image avoiding energy loss or damage of valve component. From the experimental results, it was suggested that the thermal image measurement could be an effective way to precisely diagnose and evaluate internal leak situation of valve.

  • This study derives the relative cross-section for the natW(p,xn)176Re nuclear reaction by measuring the gamma rays generated from the nuclear reaction with natural tungsten using a 100 MeV linear accelerator of the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In general, research on isotopes with a short half-life always shows a tendency that the intensity of radioactivity decreases rapidly within a short period of time, making it very difficult to measure itself. In particular, 176Re is one of the relatively short radionuclides with a half-life of 5.3 minutes. In this study, 109.08 keV gamma rays generated from the 176Re isotope having such a short half-life were measured using a high-purity Ge detector(HPGe detector). The obtained relative measurements were the results in the 8 to 14 MeV proton energy domain published by Richard G. in 1967, and the TENDL-2019 value, which was the result of A. J. Koning in 2019, which evaluated the nuclear reaction cross-section by calculation based on this comparative analysis was performed. The results of this study are expected to be usefully applied to the design of nuclear fusion reactor which is known as future energy sources, elements ratio for the nuclear synthesis of astrophysics.

  • In this study, four algorithms (Soft, Standard, Detail, Bone) were used for general CT scan (Before MAR) images and MAR (After MAR) images for patients with metal implants inserted into the hip joint. was applied to compare and analyze Noise, SNR, and CNR to find out the optimal algorithm for quantitative evaluation. As the analysis method, Image J program, which can calculate image analysis and area and pixel values on the image reconstructed with four algorithms, was used. In order to obtain Noise, SNR, and CNR, the HU mean value and HU SD value were obtained by designating the bone (ischium) closest to the metal implant in the image for the measurement site, and the background noise was the surrounding muscle. The region of interest (ROI) was equally designated as 15 × 15 mm in consideration of the size of the bone, and the values of SNR and CNR were calculated according to the given equation. As a result, for noise, After MAR and Soft algorithms showed the lowest noise, and SNR and CNR showed the highest for Before MAR and Soft algorithms. Therefore, the soft algorithm is judged to be the most appropriate algorithm for metal implant hip joint CT.

  • Thermoluminescent (TL) response characteristics of a thin LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si Teflon detectors have been studied for use in beta radiation detection. The detectors were fabricated from a mixture of LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si phosphor and Teflon powder which was molded into a thin disk form of $50mg/cm^2$ thickness. These detectors were irradiated to beta fields of $^{147}Pm,\;^{204}Tl\;and\;^{90}Sr/^{90}Y$ sources with a covering of Kapton foil ($2mg/cm^2$) and photon irradiation was carried out with a $^{137}Cs$ source at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). Batch uniformity was estimated to be 4.7% and the beta dose response presented linear relationship from 0.1 mGy to 100 Gy. The beta energy responses of thin detectors normalized to $^{137}Cs$ were presented as 0.46, 1.09 and 1.06 for $^{147}Pm,\;^{204}Tl\;and\;^{90}Sr/^{90}Y$ beta rays, respectively. The evaluated values for angular responses were $0.93{\pm}0.03\;(^{147}Pm),\;0.94{\pm}0.04\;(^{204}Tl),\;and\;0.92{\pm}0.05\;(^{90}Sr/^{90}Y)$. The results satisfied well a proposed ISO Standard for beta ray dosimeters.

  • Purpose: Schwannoma is a benign tumor that occurs mainly in the peripheral nerve. If the tumor is large or is in areas other than the nerves, it is likely to be mistaken for malignant soft tissue tumors. The authors reviewed 50 cases of giant schwannomas and assessed the distribution of the primary locations, clinical symptoms, radiological and pathological diagnosis, and diagnostic accuracy. Materials and Methods: Of the 214 pathologically confirmed schwannomas, 50 cases with a maximum diameter of 5 cm or more were extracted. The entire cohort was classified into three subgroups (major peripheral nerve, intramuscular, bone) according to the primary location, and the anatomical locations were specified. Results: When the entire cohort was classified according to the primary location, 14 tumors occurred in the major peripheral nerve, 31 cases in the muscle, and 5 cases in the bone. The mean size of the tumor in the entire cohort was 7.0 cm, and the intramuscular subgroup had the largest size with 8.0 cm. The radiological diagnosis revealed 33 out of 50 cases to be benign schwannoma (66.0%), 15 cases as low-grade malignancy (30.0%), and the remaining two cases (4.0%) as a suspicious tuberculosis abscess and tenosynovial giant cell tumor, respectively. On the clinical symptoms, Tinel sign was the most common in the peripheral nerve group with 78.6% (11/14), while 93.5% of the intramuscular group had palpation of the mass with a mean duration of 66.6 months. In the bone group, one out of five cases was reported as a low-grade malignancy. Two cases of postoperative complications were encountered; one was bleeding after tumor excision, which required hemostasis, and the other was peroneal nerve palsy after surgery. Conclusion: When assessing the large-sized soft tissue tumors in the muscles, the possibility of a benign schwannoma should be considered if 1) there is a long period of mass palpation and 2) non-specific findings in MRI. Preoperative pathology confirmation with a biopsy can help reduce the risk of overtreatment.

  • Activation foil-based Bonner sphere spheres are used to obtain neutron energy spectra of nuclear power plants or accelerator-produced neutrons. The position and the foil mass dependence of response functions should be studied carefully before measurement of Bonner spheres. This study showed that the normal incidence to the foil surface made a large shift of responses while parallel and isotropic incidence made no position dependence. The correlation between foil mass and response was not linear. Therefore, the response functions of activation-foil based Bonner spheres should be calculated for every different foil mass and the direction of Bonner spheres for parallel incidence will be preferred for radioactive neutron source or accelerator target produced neutrons.
