Inhibition of an Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression by a Hexane Extract from Perilla frutescens cv. Chookyoupjaso Mutant Induced by Mutagenesis with Gamma-ray (방사선 유도 돌연변이 약용들깨 핵산 추출물의 Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase 저해활성)

  • In earlier investigations, seeds of Perilla frutescens(L.) Britt. cv. Chookyoupjaso were irradiated with 200 Gy gamma ray to generate mutagenesis. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a hexane extract from Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. cv. Chookyoupjaso mutant 45 on the actions of anti-inflammatory activity on inducible nitric oxide synthase, and an identification of the major active compound. The hexane extract from P. frutescens exhibited activity of inhibition of a NO production ($IC_{50}$, $295.1{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$). The hexane extract was further divided into subfractions by silica-gel chromatogarphy. Inhibition of the NO production by various fractions was assayed in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Among the seven fractions, the 5th fraction was the most effective ($IC_{50}$, $19.5{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$). The 5th fraction suppressed the expression of protein of iNOS in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, and GC/MS analyses showed that isoegomaketone is a major bio-active compound in the 5th fraction. The result indicated that isoegomaketone has a good potential to be developed as an anti-inflammation agent.

Determination of Location and Depth for Groundwater Monitoring Wells Around Nuclear Facility (원자력이용시설 주변의 지하수 감시공의 위치와 심도 선정)

  • Radioactive contaminant from a nuclear facility moves to the ecosystem by run-off or groundwater flow. Among the two mechanisms, contaminant plume through a river can be easily detected through a surface water monitoring system, but radioactive contaminant transport in groundwater is difficult to monitor because of lack of information on flow path. To understand the contaminant flow in groundwater, understanding of the geo-environment is needed. We suggest a method to decide on monitoring location and points around an imaginary nuclear facility by using the results of site characterization in the study area. To decide the location of a monitoring well, groundwater flow modeling around the study area was conducted. The results show that, taking account of groundwater flow direction, the monitoring well should be located at the downstream area. Also, monitoring sections in the monitoring well were selected, points at which groundwater moves fast through the flow path. The method suggested in the study will be widely used to detect potential groundwater contamination in the field of oil storage caverns, pollution by agricultural use, as well as nuclear use facilities including nuclear power plants.

Automatic Inspection Technology for Small Bore Penetration Nozzle in High Radiation Area of Nuclear Power Plant (원자력발전 고방사선구역 소구경 노즐에 대한 자동화검사 기술)

  • Defects in dissimilar metal welds are reported to be on the increase during the operating lifespan and aging of nuclear power plants. In Korea, reported cases of defects due to dissimilar metal welds include the drain nozzle of a steam generator and RCS hot tube sampling nozzles. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a reliable automated nondestructive inspection technique and a system for the inspection of dissimilar metal welds of small diameter nozzles in a high radiation area of a nuclear power plant. In this study, to ensure effective defect inspection of small diameter nozzles (RCS high-temperature tube sampling nozzle) of a nuclear power plant, three different methods were developed. These include: (1) optimum inspection probe design by beam simulation, (2) multi-directions UT optimum inspection technique for the inspection of small diameters of different welded parts, and (3) remote control automatic inspection system. The developed technique and systems have been verified to be suitable for use in the inspection of defects in smaller diameter nozzles in nuclear power plants.

ISI NDE Total Support System for Korean Nuclear Power Plants (원전 가동중검사 종합지원체계)

  • Structural integrity of nuclear components is important for a safe operation of nuclear power plants. Therefore, nuclear power plants require to perform reliable, periodic inservice inspections. Korea Electric Power Company(KEPCO) operates the entire Korean nuclear power plants. Since nuclear power plant safety and the associated inservice inspection(ISI) are under the plant owner's responsibility, Korea Electric Power Research Institute(KEPRI), the R&D division of KEPCO, has established the ISI NDE Total Support system(TSS) for an efficient performance of ISI tasks, and initiated both key ISI NDE technology development program and traing & qualification system development program for an independent ISI operation. This paper describes details of these programs.

A Study on the Application of Standards for Clearance of Metal Waste Generated During the Decommissioning of NPP by Using the RESRAD-RECYCLE (RESRAD-RECYCLE을 활용한 원전 해체 시 발생하는 금속폐기물의 자체처분 기준 적용 연구)

  • The metal waste generated during nuclear power plant decommissioning constitutes a large proportion of the total radioactive waste. This study investigates the current status of domestic and international regulatory requirements for clearance and the clearance experience of domestic institutions. The RESRAD-RECYCLE code was used for analyzing the clearance of the metal wastes generated during actual nuclear power plant decommissioning, and assessment of the exposure dose of twenty-six scenarios was carried out. The evaluation results will be useful in preliminary analysis of clearance and recycling during nuclear power plant decommissioning. As a next step, the effects of reducing disposal costs by clearance can be studied.

  • The integrity of components and piping of operating nuclear power plants has been identified by in-service inspection(ISI) requirements and activities commensurate with standards and codes such as KEPIC MI or ASME Code Section XI. However, the other various degradation mechanisms not considered during design stage of nuclear power plants have been checked by enhanced ISI. The requirements of enhanced ISI have been voluntarily developed by the industry itself or strickly issued by regulatory body. Even though the requirements were developed by the industry, they should be reviewed by regulatory body for their application in nuclear power plants. The enhanced ISI activities and requirements of non-destructive examination(NDE) which reflect the degradation issues in nuclear power industry will be primarily discussed in this paper.

  • To explore the answer on how the evaluators' network affects efficiency of National R&D Program, this paper analyzes the network of evaluators who attended the peer-review committee for National Nuclear R&D Program from 2007 to 2008. The result derived from network analysis was applied to measure the efficiency of programs by Data Envelopment Analysis. The result shows that the weaker network produces higher efficiency as much as the research result itself. Along with the expertise of evaluators themselves, this paper implies that network should be considered as a main item for evaluation.

  • 가스터빈, 워터제트 등 기존의 추진시스템을 이용한 초고속선의 핵심기술 등을 종합하여 중형 화물선은 일본 TSL 수준에 도달시키고 중간목표로 설정한 선박의 실용화를 단계적으로 추진 하며, 선형기술, 선체 구조기술, 추진시스템기술, 원자력 안전기술, 해상 교통관제기술 등 이에 필요한 기술을 개발한다. 이들 기술은 21세기에 걸맞는 최첨단 기술이 될 것이다. 선박개발과 병행하여 초고속 선박의 운항과 조화를 이루는 고속 하역설비를 갖춘 항만시설의 개발도 함께 추진되어야 할 것이다. 초고속 해상 물류체계의 구축을 위해서는 수송 수단인 선박뿐만 아니라 항만, 하역시스템의 고속 현대화가 필요하다. 그러므로 초고속 선박과 접안, 하역이 가능한 전 용항만의 설계와 개발을 위해서는 이에 관련된 국내의 공공연구기관들과 SOC 관련 엔지니어 링사, 조선사 등 민간기업의 참여로 추진해야할 것이다. 또한 원자력 추진선 개발을 위해서는 선박용 원자로 및 연료기술이 필요하므로 원자력영구소와 미국의 참여로 공동개발하며, 상대국 에도 전용 항구가 필요하므로 해당국가간의 협약에 의해 하역장비, 운한 안전기술 등을 개발하고 건설하는 등 국제 컨소시엄의 구성이 바람직하다. 다만 기술개발의 성공과 핵심기술의 확보를 위하여 우리나라가 Initiative를 장악할 필요가 있다고 판단된다.

Surface Modification of F-MgO by High Energy Electron-beam (높은 에너지의 전자빔을 이용한 F-MgO의 표면 개질)

  • The variation of MgO surfaces, in which fluorine was contained (F-MgO), by high energy electron-beam (EB) was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fluorine on the MgO surface was eliminated by EB treatment with the consequence that the electronic structures of Mg, O and C were varied. Moreover, as a result of oxidation of carbon species on the surface by high dose EB treatment (90 kGy), the concentration of carbonate and carboxyl species on the surface was increased. In this experiment, it was confirmed that the structure of oxidized metal surface can be adjusted by varying conditions of EB treatment (energy and dose). This result implies that EB can be applied for developing new catalysts.

  • Hyaluronic acid is a disaccharide polymer that consists of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine, and is a glycosaminoglycan. It is widely distributed in animal connective tissue, coexisting with chondroitin sulfate. It forms viscous secretions or gel by bonding to protein in the body, and thus maintains and lubricates tissue structures. In addition, its antibiotic properties are applied to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, it has recently been an object of great interest at cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. $^{125}I$ has a longer half-life (59.4 days) than many other radioisotopes, and is therefore useful to long-term studies. In this study, a facile and efficient procedure for the synthesis of $^{125}I$-labeled hyaluronic acid has been designed for in vivo imaging and pharmacokinetic studies of hyaluronic acid, which are required for the development of new drugs.
