  • Manufacturing and technology industries produce large amounts of air pollutants. Ulsan Metropolitan City, South Korea, is well-known for its large industrial complexes; in particular, the concentration of $SO_2$ here is the highest in the country. We assessed $SO_2$ monitoring sites based on conditional and joint entropy, because this is a common method for determining an optimal air monitoring network. Monthly $SO_2$ concentrations from 12 air monitoring sites were collected, and the distribution of spatial locations was determined by kriging. Mean absolute error, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), bias and correlation coefficients were employed to evaluate the considered algorithms. An optimal air monitoring network for Ulsan was suggested based on the improvement of RMSE.

• Under Article 19, Paragraph 1 of the Food Industry Promotion Act, Rural Development Administration renews the Korean foods composition table every five years. Before the publication of the tenth revision of the Korean foods composition table in 2021, this paper suggests methods for collecting representative samples of 182 highly consumed foods in Korea. Food markets are categorized by their distribution channels, which are supermarkets and local markets. Eight samples are collected from each category by applying the National Food and Nutrient Analysis Program (NFNAP)'s stratified multi-stage sampling. The NFNAP was implemented in 1997 as a collaborative food composition research effort between the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to secure reliable estimates for the nutrient content of food and beverages consumed by the US population. Selected supermarkets for selecting representative food samples are Emart Kayang, Homeplus Siheung, Lottemart Dongducheon, Emart Suwon, Lottemart Dunsan, Lottemart Yeosu, Emart Ulsan, and Hanaroclub Ulsan. Selected local markets also are Doksandongusijang in Geumcheon-gu and Pungnapsijang in Songpa-gu, Seoul, Ilsansijang in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Unamsijang in Buk-gu, Gwangju, Beopdongsijang in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, Bongnaesijang in Yeongdo-gu and Jwadongjaeraesijang in Haeundae-gu, Busan, and Jungangsijang in Jinhae-gu, Changwon.

  • Arsenic was detected in the 29 water samples out of the 46 groundwaters located in the Ulsan metropolitan area and it's concentration ranges from $<0.1\;to\;72{\mu}g/L$. Among them the arsenic concentrations of three samples are over domestic drinking-water requirements $(50{\mu}g/L)$, and those of 10 samples are more than WHO MCLs, $10{\mu}g/L.$. High arsenic groundwater were recognized in the two region; one was near the tectonic line, especially Ulsan iron mine at Dalcheunri and the other was around Hyomundong distributed Jeongia conglomerate. It is estimated that the former is originated from pyrite oxydation type, oxygenated redox, whilst the latter is resulted from oxidation of reducted FeOOH. The species of arsenic in groundwater is in pentavalent arsenic, $H_2AsO_4^-,\;HAsO4_^{-2}$ near tectonic line, and trivalent arsenic, $H_3AsO_3$ around Hyomundong.

  • Invasive alien plants were identified and recorded in Ulsan city based on field surveys and related literatures. These plants consisted of 147 taxa in total, belonging to 30 families, 93 genera, 144 species, 2 subspecies and 1 variant. The family of Asteraceae was predominant with 42 taxa, followed by Gramineae with 27 taxa and Leguminosae with 15 taxa. According to the result of life-form based distribution analysis revealed that 62 taxa (42.2%) were annual plants, 48 taxa (33.6%) were perennial plants, 34 taxa (23.1%) were biennial plants, and 3 taxa (2%) were woody perennials. Compare to other administrative districts in Korea, prevalence of invasive alien plants in a certain city of Ulsan showed the seventh highest species number followed after Jeju, Gyeonggi, Jeonnam, Incheon, Seoul and Gangwon. On the basis of the results from the country origin analysis, two dominating taxa were introduced from Europe and America, 55 taxa and 51 taxa respectively. The spreading grade of alien plants was elucidated in order of 1 grade (PS) 67 grade (21.1%)>2 grade (MS) 31 taxa (21.1%)>5 grade (WS) 18 taxa (11.6%)>3 grade (CS) 17 taxa (11.6%)>4 grade (SS) 14 taxa (9.5%). Ulsan city is one of a pivotal conduit for the introduction of invasive alien plants. Thereby, reliable management plans are required to monitor these species.

  • Photographic records capturing the changes of a city are vital parts of local history archives. They were, however, not collected properly for the local history archives even by local governments. Therefore, as a solution for this problem, seven major cities (Seoul, Incheon, Gwangju, Ulsan, Daejeon, Busan, and Daegu) initiated the urban landscape documentation project for archiving the photographic records of each city. This study investigated the current status of the urban landscape documentation project and found that Daegu metropolitan city's project only holds some of the contest photos and a few old photos from the local government. A proper donating process is urgently needed to preserve valuable photographic records of Daegu, and this study aims solutions for the Daegu metropolitan city's urban landscape documentation project to improve the acquisition methods of photographic records. This study suggests the process for photographic records donation from citizens and a metadata set for donated photographs.
