A Novel Implementation of Fault-Tolerant Ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card) Using Single MAC (단일 MAC을 이용한 자동 고장 극복 Ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card) 장치 구현)

  • One of the important operational requirements for mission critical Ethernet networked system is having the fault tolerant capability. Such capability can be obtained by equipping multiport Network Interface Card (NIC) in each node in the system. Conventional NIC uses two or more Media Access Controls (MACs) and a co-processor for the MAC switching whenever an active port fails. Since firmware is needed for the co-processor, longer fail-over switching and degraded throughput can be generally expected. Furthermore the system upgrading requiring the firmware revision in each tactical node demands high cost. In this paper we propose a novel single MAC based NIC that does not use a co-processor, but just use general discrete building blocks such as MAC chip and switching chip, which results in better performances than conventional method. Experimental results validate our scheme.

  • This study was conducted to improve the shooting stability of self propelled artillery by improving the flick rammer system. The flick rammer system is designed to reduce crew fatigue and shorten the movement and loading time of the shell compared with the conventional manual loading system. Basically, in the flick rammer system of the shooting type, fall-back occurs intermittently, which causes problems in the rapid loading. To solve this problem, a detailed C.A.E. (Computer Aided Engineering) analysis of the internal structure of the existing rapid loading field was conducted. Through this, we sought a solution that can prevent fall-back by reducing the flying distance. We then optimized the loading station to reduce the flying distance and confirmed the possibility of suppressing the fall-back compared to the existing product through actual tests in the field.

  • The Army's engineers are carrying out a range of operations using various equipment, of which, artillery unit support is the representative engineering operation field. The main task of the artillery unit is to attack the enemy's center with firepower from the rear of a friendly force. The artillery must move its original position after firing several times to prevent exposure of the shooting position. This paper proposed a mathematical model and heuristic algorithm that can be used to determine the optimal allocation among engineer equipment, the team (work), and position while reflecting the constraints of the construction of an artillery position. The model proposed in this paper derived the optimal solution for the small size problems, but it takes a long time to derive the optimal solution for the problem of equipment placement of the engineer battalion and brigade scale. Although the heuristic suggested in this study does not guarantee the optimal solution, the solution could be obtained in a reasonable amount of time.

  • An initial attempt was made to investigate sea surface topography in the East China Sea using the SEASAT-A altimeter data. Over the study area for the two major typhoon surges generated during the SEASAT mission, space and time variability of the shallow water tides, meteorological effects and earth tides were removed from the altimetric measurements using the systematic procedures which include the two-dimensional sea model of the East China Sea. The analysis of ten flights over the ground track for the typhoon periods were presented and discussions were made for further studies. This initial study has been undertaken in association with the programme of establishment of systematic altimeter data reduction system for the study of shelf dynamics in the East China Sea.

Study on Methodology of Trade-Off for Space-borne FPA Thermal Design by Simplified Thermal Node Analysis (단순화 된 열 저항 해석을 이용한 우주용 FPA 열제어 설계 방안 연구)

  • The main objective of thermal design for a space-borne FPA(Focal Plane Assembly) is to provide stable thermal environment during imaging operation and thus maintain the image quality. An FPA must be maintained within its operating temperature range and cooled down to its initial temperature soon enough for the next imaging operation. This paper describes the study result on performing trade-off studies for FPA thermal design by using simplified thermal node analysis about FPA preliminary design. It also describes the verification results of the study by comparing thermal analysis results and trade-off study results. According to results, we can conclude that this approach is useful for simple and quick trade-off studies without thermal analysis based on thermal math models.

  • Cylinder machine usually gives more fiber orientation than fourdrinier and has limitation in machine speed because of fiber wash-off caused by centrifugal force in case of adding machine speed. This study aimed at improvement of paper formation and higher productivity by setting up an apron in vat inlet and by adjustment of mould water head. As results, there were improvement of formation and increase of machine speed, which ultimately improve productivity. Setting up an apron successfully decreased fiber wash-off. Fiber orientation and two-sideness of ash distribution became less severe. These results could lead to better dimension stabilities in the CD through mitigation of fiber orientation and also could result in less curl from two-sideness of paper. The proper adjustment of water head inside the cylinder mould proved to be important factor not only in paper formation but also in decreasing paper two-sideness.

  • Research and development of mineral-resource-related products has progressed with the increased need to develop mineral resources. The DTH hammer is a resultant product. However, owing to particular work conditions of underground drilling, it is difficult to obtain direct data on the DTH hammer. A DTH drill rig requires a significant amount of money and time for actual testing. This thesis aimed to resolve this problem by using CAE. In a previous paper, the structure of the DTH hammer and its movement were analyzed, and a standard model based on simulation was proposed. Then, experimentation and comparison verification were conducted. In this paper, by using an experimental design method, we derived a control factor of the impact force and efficiency of the DTH hammer and attempted to optimize the design. As a result, the impact energy increased by 14.9%, and the efficiency increased by 3.3%.

3-Dimensional Positioning Using DGPS/DGLONASS (DGPS/DGLONASS에 의한 3차원 위치결정)

  • Although GPS has proven to be efficient in the fields of navigation and surveying, it has many problems of positioning in downtown areas. Therefore, if GPS is combined with GLONASS which is similar to GPS in its positioning and signal system, it is expected that accuracy will be improved. However, we should address certain problems that exist related to the coordinate, time, and signal system between the two. The purpose of this study is to develop a GPS/GLONASS combination program by considering the properties of GPS and GLONASS and to solve the problems related to differences in the coordinates system and signal system. It is also to present the efficiency of the program in navigation and geographic information through analyzing 3D positioning accuracy by GPS/GLONASS combination with an application experiment. As a result of this study, the accuracy of the DGPS/DGLONASS positioning program corresponded to that of commercial program, and that's accuracy was better than that of DGPS. Especially, the acquisition of navigation and geographic information was possible by DGPS/DGLONASS combination in downtown area where the continuous 3D positioning is impossible by DGPS only.

Analysis of Collision Avoidance Maneuver Frequency for the KOMPSAT-2 and the KOMPSAT-5 (아리랑위성 2호, 5호의 우주파편 충돌회피기동 주기 분석)

  • In this paper, a collision avoidance maneuver frequency for the KOMPSAT-2 and the KOMPSAT-5 is analyzed. For the statistical prediction of the avoidance maneuver frequency, mission orbits, responsive time, accepted collision probabilities, and positional uncertainties of primary and secondary objects are considered. In addition, the collision avoidance maneuver frequency of the KOMPSAT-2 is compared to the case that NORAD catalog during one year is used to calculate that of the KOMPSAT-2. As a result, the collision avoidance maneuver frequency is one per year on average and effective factors on the statistical prediction of the avoidance maneuver frequency are investigated. Efforts to improve its prediction accuracy are also discussed.

Line Planning Optimization Model for Intercity Railway (지역간 철도의 노선계획 최적화 모형)

  • The purpose of this research is to optimize the line planning of the intercity passenger railway. In this study, the line planning problem has been formulated into a mixed integer programming by minimizing both user costs (passenger's total travel time) and operator costs (operation, maintenance and vehicle costs) with multiple train types. As a solution algorithm, the branch-and-bound method is used to solve this problem. The change of travel demand, train speed and the number of schedules have been tested through sensitivity analysis. The optimal stop-schedules and frequency as well as system split with respect to each train type have been found in the case study of Kyoung-bu railway line in Korea. The model and results of this research are useful to make a decision for railway operation strategy, to analyze the efficiency of new railway systems and to evaluate the social costs of users and operators.
