The Effects of PNF Upper Extremity Pattern Based Vibration Exercise Equipment on Stability and Balance of the Elderly (PNF 상지패턴에 기초한 진동운동기구 훈련이 노인의 체간 안정성과 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : This study examines the effect of vibration exercise grafting PNF patterns for 6 weeks on upper body stability and equilibrium for seniors having fifteen or over of MMSE-K. Method : A total of 10 senior citizens participated in this study. Each participant performed PNF patterned exercises using vibration sports equipment for 30 minutes, once static a week, for six weeks. We measured trunk stability and balance degree before and after the six-week exercise program. Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) was used to measure trunk stability, while Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) was used to measure balance degree. The collected data was processed using paired t-test to confirm the difference between pre-program conditions and post-program conditions. Results: The results of our study show that post-program trunk stability measurements increased when compared to pre-program data; however, this increase was not statistically significant. pre and post-measurements for satatic balance and dynamic balance were statistically unchanged. Conclusion: Due to limitations in the number of participants, the procedural design of this experiment, and the limited amount of time participants actually controlled, this study failed to produce statistically significant results. However, further study should be conducted using a systematically implemented exercise program to show support for exercising with flexi-bar as an effective program for the elderly.

President Park Chung-Hee's Greed for Dominance and Oppression during Yushin Regime: The National Council for Unification Subject, President's emergency rule, and Buma Uprising (유신체제시기 박정희 대통령의 집권욕과 폭압성: 통일주체국민회의·대통령긴급조치·부마항쟁)

  • This study deals with President Park Chung-hee's greed for dominance and oppression during the Yushin Regime in the 1970's and consists of case studies related to anti-democracy of the National Council for Unification Subject, illegality of President's emergency rule and oppression in the process of putting down Buma Uprising. The National Council for Unification Subject was an organization for presidential selection and institutionalized by the enactment of Yushin constitution. Emergency rule was carried into effect as a means to repressing college students and forces out of office for the president's long-term seizure of power. And Buma Uprising rose against violence in resistance to the Yushin regime and president Park Chung-hee's greed for dominance and oppression. These case analyses applied the aspects of causal relationship(birth and fall of Yushin Regime), legal system(Yushin constitution and president's emergency rule) and behavior(President Park's greed for dominance and oppression) for this study. The National Council for Unification Subject institutionalized through Yushin constitution and the Yushin regime formed by emergency rule enabled President Park to cling to long-term seizure of power by means of greed for dominance and oppression. After all, his failure to keep the spirit of the time and stepping stone for democratic constitutional government triggered Buma Uprising, a kind of anti-Establishment movement, and caused the fall of the Yushin regime.

Radiotherapy for the Low-grade Astrocytomas (양성 성상세포종의 방사선치료)

  • Purpose : To evaluate the efficacy of radiotherapy for the low-grade astrocy-tomas and confirm the variables influencing treatment results. Materials and Methods : Forty-six patients with low-grade astrocytoma received radiotherapy after surgical removal (36 patients) or biopsy (10 patients) from 1979 to 1990. Twenty patients had grade I histology and 26 had grade II. External radiotherapy was done by conventional schedule with the total dose of 45 to 60 Gy (median: 54 Gy). The median follow-up period was 5 years. Results : The 2- and 5-year survival rates were $80\%$ and $72\%$, respectively and the 2- and 5-year progression-free survival was $75\%$ and $63\%$, respectively. The survival was influenced significantly by the histologic grade, the histologic type, and performance status. Major complication was not found. Conclusion: In spite of good survival, the local failure was still the major problem. Age and the extent of surgery as well as three favorable factors should be considered in the future treatments.

Identification of a Protein Kinase using a FITC-labelled Synthetic Peptide in Streptomyces griseus IFO 13350 (형광 Peptide를 이용한 Streptomyces griseus IFO 13350의 인산화 단백질 동정)

  • Streptomycetes is a group of Gram-positive soil bacteria that growas a branching vegetative mycelium leading to the formation of spores, and display a physiological differenti-ation related to the synthesis of many secondary metabolites including antibiotics. Their complex life cycle and multicellular differentiation require various levels of regulation and types of signal transduction systems including eukaryotic-type serine/threonine protein kinases and prokaryotic-type histidine/aspartic acid protein kinases. Akt kinase that was found in cells is a sorine/threonine kinase controlling signal pathway for multi-tude of important cellular events. The activation or inactivation of Akt kinase in the cell is one of the critical regulatory points to deliver cell proliferation, differentiation, survival or apoptosis signal. To find the regula-tory protein homologous to Akt in Streptomyces, the fluorescien-labeled synthetic peptide (FITC-TRRSR-TESIT) was designed from the consensus sequence of target proteins for Akt kinase. From the difference of the mobility between the nonphosphorylated and phosphorylated synthetic peptides on Agarose gel electro-phoresis, the Akt-phosphorylating activity was monitored. The cell-free extract prepared from Streptomyces griseus IFO 13350 and the Akt homologous protein was purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and many steps of column chromatographies such as, DEAE-Sepharose, Mono Q, Resource Phenyl-Soporose and Gel permeation column chromatographies. As a result, the protein phosphorylating the fluorescien-labeled Akt substrate was identified and it's molecular weight was estimated as 39 kDa on SDS-PAGE.

An Experimental Study of Sediment Transport Patterns behind Offshore Structure (외해 구조물 배후의 표사이동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, securing a vast land in the land region becomes more difficult and efforts to seek its alternation in the sea area have been increased. As a consequence, the coastal region has been faced to extensive beach erosion problems. In planning offshore structures such as artificial islands, it is necessary to forecast the influence of the structure construction exerting on the beach erosion of the adjacent coast. In the present study, the sediment movement pattern behind offshore structure was examined through a series of three dimensional movable bed experiments, so as to develop the numerical model which forecasts morphological change including beach erosions. The experimental results reveal that the sediment movement patterns of the beach line side and the depth region are separated at a certain boundary line. In details, at the beach side including swash zone the sediment movement becomes dominant, which is governed by a relation between depth contours and incident wave directions, while at the depth region the bed load and suspended load due to the orbit motion of waves are carried by nearshore currents, and both movements are clearly separated at a specified boundary that is related to partial standing wave from the beach. It is expected that these results can be effectively used for verification of a numerical model on morphological change of the coast.

Gyroscope Signal Denoising of Ship's Autopilot using Kalman Filter and Multi-Layer Perceptron (칼만필터와 다층퍼셉트론을 이용한 선박 오토파일럿의 자이로스코프 신호 잡음제거)

  • Since January 1, 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has put in place strong regulations to reduce air pollution caused by ships by lowing the upper limit of ship fuel oil sulfur content from 3.5% to 0.5% for ships passing through all sea areas around the world. Although it is important to reduce air pollutants by using fuel oil with low sulfur content, reducing the amount of energy waste through the economic operation of a ship can also help reduce air pollutants. Ships can follow designated routes accurately even under the influence of noise using autopilot systems. However, regardless of their quality, the performance of these systems is af ected by noise; heading angles with added measurement noise from the gyroscope are input into the autopilot system and degrade its performance. A technique to solve these problems reduces noise effects through the application of a Kalman filter, which is widely used in condition estimation. This method, however, cannot completely eliminate the effects of noise. Therefore, to further improve noise removal performances, in this study we propose a better denoising method than the Kalman filter technique by applying a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) in forward direction motion and a Kalman Filter in rotation motion. Simulations show that the proposed method improves forward direction motion by preventing the malfunction of a rudder more so than merely using a Kalman Filter.

  • This study aimed to provide the basic data for the prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome by measuring and comparatively analyzing the changes in muscular strength, grasping force, and agility of hands before/after practice, targeting the dental hygiene students taking the scaling practice course. Targeting total 15 students(4th-year) of Dental Hygienics who had no problems with anatomical structure, muscular strength, grasping force, and senses of hands, the muscular strength, grasping force, and agility of hands were measured before/after the scaling practice. The collected data was processed by using the PASW Statistics 18.0(SPSS) Program. In the results of this study, the muscular strength and grasping force of hands were decreased after the practice compared to the ones before the practice. The agility of hands was increased after the practice compared to the one before the practice. Based on such results of this study, it would be necessary to avoid such exhausting hand gestures for scaling, and also to develop the preventive exercise to build up the strength of hands like stretching before/after scaling.

  • In this study, the controller structure and control algorithm of medical robot bed developed for pressure ulcer prevention and healing are described. The existing pressure ulcer prevention mattress is operated manually and the remaining maximum body pressure exceeds the pressure of ulcer generation, so there is always room for pressure ulcers. However, the system developed in this study does not generate the pressure ulcers because the body pressure drops to zero when the keyboard of the bed descends using the active electric driving keyboard. In addition, even if the bed is raised and the pressure above the critical body ulcer pressure is abnormal, the device and the control algorithm are designed so that the lasting time is within the pressure ulcer generation critical time and the pressure ulcer itself is not generated. The bed key board motor is a motor designed with the BLDC servos suitable for medical use and these can communicate each other easily through CAN(Car Area Network). The system is new medical robot bed that is effective in preventing pressure ulcers and will be distributed to many patients suffering from pressure ulcers.

Vessel Collision Analysis of an Underwater Soil Slope using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian Scheme 2: Parametric Study (Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian 기법을 이용한 선박의 수중사면 충돌해석 2 : 매개변수연구)

  • In this study, parametric analyses are performed using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme for the collision behaviors of a vessel and an underwater slope that constitutes part of an artificial protective island. The vessel parameters considered in the analysis are bow angle, stem angle, draft, and impact velocity. The gradient of the slope, the friction coefficient between the bow and the slope, and soil strength are considered as parameters of the slope. For each parameter, the dissipated collision energy and the collision force are estimated from the behavior of the vessel, and the energy dissipation mechanism is identified in terms of the ground deformation. The collision force is assumed as an exponential function, and the effects of the parameters are estimated. As a result, only two parameters, the gradient of the slope and the friction coefficient between the vessel and the soil, can affect the exponential coefficient of the function. The dissipated energy by the soil can thus be estimated adequately. The relationship between the volume of the soil pushed out by the bow and the dissipated collision energy is estimated as a linear function. This relationship is independent of the magnitude of the collision energy, and affected more by the friction coefficient and the soil strength than by the parameters of the vessel.

The Influence of Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery on Hospital Course of Spontaneous Pneumothorax (비디오 흉강경 수술법이 자연기흉의 치료과정에 미치는 영향)

  • Video-assisted thoracic surgery(VATS) is emerging as a viable alternative to thoracotomy when surgical treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax is required. 20 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax underwent bullectomy between July 1995 and May 1996. The patients were divided into two groups : Control group ; the patients who received with mid-axillary approach(n=10), Experimental group ; the patients who received with VATS (n=10). The results were as follows ; 1. The total sex distribution was male predominance (male:female=17:3). Mean age of control group was 29.6$\pm$9.8 years and experimental group was 27.2$\pm$11.9 years. 2. The mean period of postoperative chest tube indwelling duration and hospital stay were 3.3$\pm$0.8 days and 7.9$\pm$1.2 days in control group and 2.1$\pm$0.9 days and 5.2$\pm$3.1 days in experimental group(p=0.005 and p=0.02). 3. The mean time of operation, vital signs and arterial blood gas analysis did not showed any statistical differences between the groups. 4. Percent recovery of tidal volume and forced vital capacity were significantly improved in experimental group comparing with control group (p<0.05). 5. The patients undergoing VATS experienced significantly less postoperative pain and limitation of motion. In conclusion, VATS is safe and offers the potential benefits of shorter postoperative hospital stays and less pain with cosmetic benefits.
