  • For monitoring the flight trajectory and the status of a launch vehicle, the mission control system in NARO space center process data acquired from the ground tracking system, which consists of two tracking radars, four telemetry stations, and one electro-optical tracking system. Each tracking unit exhibits its own tracking error mainly due to multi-path, clutter and radio refraction, and by utilizing only one among transmitted informations, it is not possible to determine the actual vehicle trajectory. This paper presents a way of generating flight trajectory via post-processing the data received from the ground tracking system. The post-processing algorithm is divided into two parts: compensation for atmosphere radio refraction and multi-sensor fusion, for which a decentralized Kalman filter was adopted and implemented based on constant acceleration model. Applications of the present scheme to real data resulted in the flight trajectory where the tracking errors were minimized than done by any one sensor.

  • Downwash from helicopter rotor blades and external winds from various maneuvering make an unguided rocket change its trajectory and range. For the prediction of the trajectory and range, it is essential to consider the downwash effect. In this study, an algorithm was developed to calculate 6-Degree-Of-Freedom(6 DOF) forces and moments exerting on the rocket, and total flight trajectory of a 2.75-inch unguided rocket in a helicopter downwash flow field. Using Actuator Disk Model(ADM) analysis result, the algorithm could analyze the entire trajectory in various initial launch condition such as launch angle, launch velocity, and external wind. The algorithm that considered the interference between a fuselage and external winds could predict the trajectory change more precisely than inflow model analysis. Using the developed algorithm, the attitude and trajectory change mechanism by the downwash effect were investigated analyzing the effective angle of attack change and characteristics of pitching stability of the unguided rocket. Also, the trajectory and range changes were analyzed by considering the downwash effect with external winds. As a result, it was concluded that the key factors of the rocket range change were downwash area and magnitude which effect on the rocket, and the secondary factors were the dynamic pressure of the rocket and the interference between a fuselage and external winds. In tailwind case which was much influential on the range characteristics than other wind cases, the range of the rocket rose as increasing the tailwind velocity. However, there was a limit that the range of the rocket did not increase more than the specific tailwind velocity.

  • A new apparatus was presented in order to help understand the concept of the Coriolis force which is essential in understanding the trajectories of the atmospheric current and the tide of seawater. In the apparatus proposed in high-school textbooks, since the slide from which the ball is released is set outside the rotating disk, it was not possible to interpret, with the trajectory of the ball on the disk, the motion of the atmosphere and the current of seawater occurring as a result of the Coriolis force. In order to resolve such problem, a new apparatus was developed in which the slide was set on the disk and rotated with the disk. Experiments were carried out using both the existing apparatus and the new apparatus, and the results were compared. While, in the experiment performed with the existing apparatus, it was difficult to analyze the trajectory of ball because the motion of the ball was not smooth when it hit the disk, in the experiment with the new apparatus it was much easier to analyze the trajectories. It was also possible to compare the trajectories when the initial velocity of the ball was varied.

  • We examined the temporal characteristics of the oceanic eddy diffusion at 5 coastal regions of Korea by measuring the separation distances of multiple drifters released simultaneously at the same by the GPS and Decca transponder system. The observed variance of separation distance, for the time scales from minutes to hours, is proportional to t/SUP m/ with scaling exponent m between 1.2 and 2.0. The observed Lagrangian trajectories of drifters show fractal characteristics instead of random walk or Brown motion. As an effort toward a development of a realistic model of the oceanic eddy diffusion, we simulated the Lagrangian trajectories of drifters by fractional Brown motion (FBM) model. The observed variances of drifter separations can be generated by the FBM process provided the Hurst exponent is the same as the observed one. We further showed that the observed power law in the variance of drifter separations cannot be simulated with an ordinary Brown motion or random walk process.

  • The present simulation model relies on a new approach of the heavy particle motion in a turbulent flow considering the time and space correlation to the Lagrangian point of view. The turbulent field is, here, assumed that its characteristic scales are random and follow a Poisson's distribution. Using this model, we have computed the trajectory of each particle, that is, its velocity and position at each time in order to study the dispersion of particles in a grid turbulent flow. The computed results have been compared to the corresponding experimental data. Due to the complex mechanism of turbulence and the theoretically and experimentally lacking information, we had to make some assumptions for simplifying the situation, but we have found the good agreement between simulated and measured results. In particular, the application of the present method on the Lagrangian correlation of particle provides an interesting alternative to the usual computational methods.

  • The present study is concerned with aerodynamic characteristics and reference trajectory generation of Hope-X in Approach/Landing phase. To create reference trajectory generation in A/L phase, detailed informations on lift and drag coefficients of Hope-X must be provided. To obtain these informations, aerodynamic characteristics of Hope-X are analyzed using the commercial CFD code, Fluent. The A/L phase is conceptually divided into three sub-phases: the Steepglide Slope phase for stability of vehicle, the Flare Maneuver phase for safety landing, the Circular Flare for smooth connecting with these both phases. The reference trajectory is obtained by determination of flight-path angle through geometrical formulas with consideration of aerodynamic coefficient and dynamic characteristic.

  • Captured human motion data has been widely utilized for understanding the mechanism of human motion and synthesizing the animation of virtual characters. Searching for desired motions from given motion data is an important prerequisite of analyzing and editing those selected motions. This paper presents a new method of content-based motion retrieval without the need of additional metadata such as keywords. While existing search methods have focused on skeletal configurations of body pose or planar trajectories of locomotion, our method receives a three-dimensional trajectory as its input query and retrieves a set of motion intervals in which the trajectories of body parts such as hands, foods, and pelvis are similar to the input trajectory. In order to allow the user to intuitively sketch spatial trajectories, we used the Leap Motion controller that can precisely trace finger movements as the input device for our experiments. We have evaluated the effectiveness of our approach by conducting a user study in which the users search for dozens of pre-selected motions from baseketball motion data including a variety of moves such as dribbling and shooting.
